If they want to look like Montana's team they need to fix this mess with stripes first. Bring back 3rd stripe!

Seriously. Hate the niners, even though grew up in a family of nine fans, and my grandmas nephew was team doctor during the 80s. They really need to bring back the 3rd stripe. The throwbacks clearly show you can have all 3 stripes and then obviously put the numbers on the shoulders.

I don't get it.  I thought teams having contrasting colors was a good thing yet this is praised?  Or is it about traditional unis?

It's about traditional unis. Traditional unis takes precedence. If 1 or more teams have some f'd up uniforms then contrasting colors is consolation prize. Hence why either the niners or packers would have looked good against the chiefs.

If the 49ers came out with that throwback today, they'd get lambasted for it and rightfully so. It's 2020. The Super Bowl does not need drop shadow and mismatched stripes.

Everyone write "Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's good" on the chalkboard.

The reason I don't think they will get the exemption is because the helmet is using an old logo. It would be weird if the NFL let them wear an old helmet logo in a game where signage is on the field and all throughout town of the current logo. Weirdly enough, the retro logo has been in the 49ers endzone since the middle of the 2018 season.

Also before anybody brings up the Rams throwback, it was designated as the regular home uniform and that was that. The all white is color rush for the 49ers and not a home or away uniform. The NFL has no notice of that and already has signage of the regular uniforms and stuff ready to go.

The 49ers wore their normal helmet logo week 17 against the Seahawks.

This matchup has a little bit of both to me, to some degree. Yes they both wear red, but (if the 49ers wear the primaries) two key elements - the helmet and pants - will be completely contrasting colors and work enough for me to keep it interesting. And of course, both are great classic looks and even if the 49ers somehow get the throwback exception, this is a matchup free from ridiculous piping or unnecessary bells and whistles.

The field is probably where the problem will be (I expect all red end zones), but the uniforms aren’t a problem to me at all.

I really hope the NFL doesn’t allow San Francisco’s throwbacks. Not because they’re bad, I actually love them, but because of the can of worms that it would open up. Let’s say, for example, next year the Bills go 3-0 in red during the regular season and request to wear them in the playoffs (or Super Bowl if the NFC team wears white). The NFL wouldn’t have a case to turn them down since they allowed San Francisco to wear their alternates and before you know it teams are busting out alternates for the Super Bowl every year. Come on NFL, you’ve got plenty of flaws, but at least you still require primary jerseys for the playoffs. Do the smart thing and keep it that way.

THANK YOU

but for real, I get the hate for the new uniforms. They're garish and the elements don't particularly flow well together. That said, these old uniforms were NOT GOOD and they were never considered good (until the change) for a reason. It's like torture for me watching everybody praise this look all of a sudden after it received nothing but hate for the greater part of a decade. The new look didn't get it quite right but it's fixable.

People have short memories. When the news came out that the Titans were changing their uniforms, there was a lot of excitement on here. The old look was viewed as dated and it had already eroded from what it used to be.

It's just unfortunate that the replacement is held back by a few glaring flaws of its own. I think they're on to something with the sword theme, but I still don't understand the purpose of the side panels or pants "stripes." The Titans are a prime candidate for a Dolphins-style refresh that cleans up their look a bit.

The NFL has granted these exemptions plenty of times in the past and it hasn't led to the slippery slope scenario you're describing. I just don't want them to approve it this time because those Niners throwbacks are ugly.

Does anyone know what the story was behind the Rams’ “throwback” end zones in the Super Bowl last year? Was that an exemption or something they could do because the throwback was technically the primary?

I only ask because I wonder if that could be precedent enough for both the Chiefs and 49ers to use the wordmarks and colors from their throwback end zones this year.

No!

Look like Montana's team, not like Young's one-hit-wonder.

They wore the red throwbacks for their Super Bowl win during the 75th anniversary. The last time they actually won a Super Bowl.

Them wearing the white throwbacks for their Super Bowl appearance during the 100th anniversary only makes sense.

I am absolutely 100% on board with this.
