The Road to Omaha: The 2019 NCAA Baseball Tournament Thread

Recommended Posts

Time for a Day 1 recap...

Top Seed Terror: The top seeds rolled through pretty easily in the first day with some big time beatings from the likes of LSU (17-3 winners over Stony Brook), Ole Miss (16-2 winners over Jacksonville State), Georgia (13-3 winners over Mercer) and Georgia Tech (13-2 winners over Florida A&M). There was one top seed who lost...

Chaos in Corvallis: You know things are crazy when the top two seeds in this region face off in a elimination game. Michigan, despite not having their best player in the lineup due to turf toe, rolled past Creighton. In the nightcap, Cincinnati stunned Oregon State 7-6. For a program that hasn't been here in 45 years... yeah, that's big.

Washed Out: Rain played havoc in at least two of the regions. In Chapel Hill, it delayed the start of the Liberty-Tennessee game (which the Flames won, BTW). IN Greenville, it halted play for the day. They'll finish up the Campbell-NC State game with the Camels ahead in the bottom of the 9th, then they'll head into the Quinnipiac-East Carolina game.

Day 2 is in the books.

The Fallen Fifteen: Of the teams knocked out yesterday, there were ten 4 seeds, one 3 seed (McNeese State), three 2 seeds (Illinois, California and UC Santa Barbara) and one 1 seed...

Down goes the Champs: It was supposed to be a year of rebuilding for Oregon State. Their long time coach retired and a good chunk of players were either drafted by MLB teams or moved on. Still, the Beavers made the tournament and earned the number 16 seed... what happened? Well, they got stunned by Cincinnati and then got caught by Creighton to end the season.

Baylor Beating: How angry were the Bears yesterday after losing to Loyola Marymount? Well, let's just say that Omaha had no idea what was coming. The Mavericks were pasted 24-6 in this game. The catcher for Baylor, Shea Langeliers, had a tournament record 11 RBI's in the game. Ouch...

Top Seed Trouble: Speaking of the same region, LMU is now in the driver's seat after stunning the top seed Bruins. UCLA now joins a group of top seeds that are in danger of elimination. In that group are Georgia, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, East Carolina, Louisville and Stanford. Speaking of East Carolina...

Greenville Blues: After rain ruined the first day of play here, the low seeds held serve as Campbell hung on to beat NC State and then East Carolina would lay an egg against, of all teams, Quinnipiac. What makes this region different is that there will be three games today instead of two. East Carolina and NC State open up play in the first of two elimination games, followed by the winner's bracket game between Campbell and Quinnipiac. The day ends with the winner of the first game and the loser of the second game meeting in yet another elimination affair.

Last Team Luck: The last four teams in were Duke, Florida State, Michigan and TCU (For the record, the first four out were Houston, Missouri, Texas State and UCF). So far, the performance of each of these teams has proven the committee right in putting them in. TCU has the lone loss of this group as these four teams have gone a combined 7-1 so far.

TV Schedule - All times are EST

12 Noon - West Virginia vs. Texas A&M (Morgantown Region - Elimination Game)

Day 3 is in the books...

Looking ahead: Ten teams moved on to the Super Regional round of the tournament after wins yesterday. A few match-ups are set now as Arkansas will host Ole Miss, LSU will host Florida State, Vanderbilt hosting Duke, and Auburn visiting North Carolina. Texas Tech and Mississippi State also moved on.

Revenge!: East Carolina looked wounded after getting stunned by Quinnipiac in the first round. Well, the Pirates were not going to take that lying down as they ousted both NC State and the same Bobcat team that got them the day before.

TV Schedule - All times are EST

7 PM - Creighton vs. Michigan (Corvallis Regional - Winner Takes All)

10 PM - Loyola Marymount vs. UCLA (Los Angeles  Regional - Winner Takes All)

7 PM - Oklahoma State vs. UConn (Oklahoma City Regional - Winner Takes All)

The Super Regional round is now set...

Friday, Saturday and Sunday (If Necessary)

#10 East Carolina vs. #7 Louisville: Both teams went the hard road to get here. East Carolina had to sit through a wash out before getting stunned by Quinnipiac in the first round. The Pirates would then rise up and take down NC State, Quinnipiac and then Campbell in back to back games to win their regional. Now, they face a Louisville team that won yesterday on a walk-off single against Illinois State. The Cardinals also went through the losers bracket after getting stunned by the Redbirds.

#9 Oklahoma State vs. #8 Texas Tech: Big 12 rivals square off for a chance to reach Omaha. Texas Tech had no issues getting here as they swept away Dallas Baptist at home while Oklahoma State, playing in Oklahoma City thanks to the rain that washed out their normal home field, held off a hard charging UConn team to escape with the win

Duke vs. #2 Vanderbilt: As one of the last teams to get in, the Blue Devils made themselves worthy of that at-large bid by running through the regional in Morgantown, taking down Texas A&M and the hosts from West Virginia. The reward? A date with high powered Vanderbilt, who had no issues at home in a rout of Indiana State

Michigan vs. #1 UCLA: Another one of the last at-large bids, Michigan took advantage of the chaos in Corvallis to win the regional after pasting Creighton 17-6. The Wolverines will stay out west to face the top overall seed in the Bruins, who finally took down Loyola Marymount last night to win at home. It wasn't easy as the Lions did beat them once already

Saturday, Sunday and Monday (If Necessary)

#12 Ole Miss vs. #5 Arkansas: In the only battle between two SEC teams, the Rebels and Razorbacks square off. Ole Miss made things look easy after pounding Jacksonville State senseless in their regional final. Meanwhile, Arkansas had no issues and sent TCU packing at home

Florida State vs. #13 LSU: In the swan song for famed Florida State coach Mike Martin, the Seminoles rolled their way through the Athens regional and now takes on a dangerous Louisiana State team that had no problems winning at home. Can they end the legend of Martin?

Auburn vs. #14 North Carolina: In the last of the three battles between the SEC and the ACC, it's Auburn heading north to face the Tar Heels. Auburn used a walk-off home run to power their run through the Atlanta Regional while North Carolina also used a walk-off win as they breezed through their home regional

#11 Stanford vs. #6 Mississippi State: Stanford takes the long trip to Stark Vegas to take on a red hot Bulldog team that boasts the all time conference leader in hits. While the Bulldogs blazed through their regional win no issues, Stanford had to work their way in after Fresno State popped them in the winner's bracket

The forecast for the superregionals in Starkville, Nashville, Louisville, Fayetteville, Baton Rouge, and possibly Lubbock is not looking that good.

I think what surprises me ion doing some research, that as consistently good I remember FSU being in baseball, their best finish in CWS is runner up twice.

I’m so happy Michigan made the CWS. They look like a lot of fun and taking out the top seed like they did shows that they maybe one of the favorites to win

Auburn scores 13 in the 1st Inning.

Two UNC pitchers fail to record an out with the starter throwing four consecutive walks to start the game.

They played at Texas Tech this season already and lost all three games.  They were outscored 29-10 in those three games.

They also avoided Oregon State in the Corvallis Regional.

For the Super Regionals, Michigan was tied with Duke for the longest odds at 50-1.

The College World Series is now set...

Saturday

Michigan vs. #8 Texas Tech: As one of the last teams in the field, Michigan had to prove a lot to the naysayers who thought they weren't worthy of an at-large bid. What the Wolverines did was steal a regional in Corvallis and took down the top overall seed in UCLA. Not bad for a program that hasn't been to Omaha since 1984. First up for them is Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have taken care of business at home in the regional round and in the Super Regional against conference rival Oklahoma State, they used a three run homer to seal the deal/

Florida State vs. #5 Arkansas: Another one of the last four teams in was Florida State. In the final season of legendary coach Mike Martin's career, the Seminoles nearly didn't make it in. What they did was something worthy of a movie script: They swept their way past the Athens Regional and then walked it off in Baton Rouge to give their coach one last shot at the National Championship. Arkansas is their first opponent and the Razorbacks mean business. How so? Well... ask Ole Miss, who were on the receiving end of 11-2 and 14-1 beatings by them in the Super Regional.

Sunday

#7 Louisville vs. #2 Vanderbilt: In the only game between national seeds, these two teams are red hot. Vanderbilt opened the Super Regional against Duke on a very bad foot, getting hammered to the tune of 18-5. What the Commodores did was recover like the championship contenders that they are... pitcher Kumar Rocker threw a no-hitter in Game 2 and then the offense slammed the door shut on the Blue Devils in Game 3. As hot as the Commodores are, the boys from Louisville are just as hot. The Cardinals took advantage of a tired East Carolina team and pretty much smacked the Pirates around.

Auburn vs. #6 Mississippi State: The only game between SEC foes is one that wasn't expected here in Omaha... well, Mississippi State was expected to be here. The Bulldogs were a steamroller as they took advantage of their home field to bully Stanford in the Super Regional. Auburn, on the other hand, has been sort of disappointing... until now. The Tigers used a walk off homer to run through the Atlanta Regional and then, in Chapel Hill, exploded for 13 runs in the first inning to earn the program's first trip back since 1997

I'd like to see Michigan win it all in an upset to break up the Southern/West Coast domination but I'm going with Vandy or Mississippi State to take it.
