2019 NBA Summer season

The Sixers are getting killed right now for giving Harris the max contract, and allowing Butler to go.  I don't know butler other than what I saw last year, but he seemed like a freaking stud and a good teammate - especially in the playoffs when he really needed to pick up the slack for a worthless Embiid.  Someone on sports radio brought up the possibility of Horford, and after the laughter subsided, everyone agreed that while unlikely, it'd be a great move.  So I guess it's good?

Josh Richardson and Horford is better than Jimmy Butler. But better than Butler and Redick? Perhaps, in large part because Richardson is 25 and improving every year.

If you lose Butler, Al Horford is a good consolation prize. Horford has another one or two good years in him, and provides good defense and stability.

Paying max dollars for five years for 18 ppg Tobias Harris is a real drag though.

Horford at the expense of Butler is a step up for the Sixers.

I guess that makes me feel better.  I'll see how good he is when I start watching again when the playoffs start.

They're getting killed for undermining "the process", since some key Process guys were used to get Butler and now he's gone, and another one or two was butchered by Colangelo (Markel Fultz LOL.)

The Process was dead and buried last year. Now the Sixers are a functional franchise looking to win games. Philly fans should be happy.

If they want to play fantasy basketball, NBA 2K is on sale right now.

I wonder if it was one of those things where someone would have done it, and if they were losing Butler they needed to save face by keeping Harris (though he wasn't really loved by the fans).  I wonder if his goofy tall white buddy stays too.  That guy is fun... though he barely plays.

I'm struggling to see what Butler sees in Miami, especially since Dragic is gone (to join the Eastern European dream team in Dallas).

If you're an upset Knicks fan, don't search YouTube for JD and the Straight Shot videos. They're infuriating.

BUtler said something about the farewell ceremony for Wade blew his mind and he thought he'd want to play for a franchise like that... or something like that.

This whole "sign and trade" deal is absurd.  The NBA's rules in general are absurd.  Guys are drafted by teams they know they'll never play for, trades are made and FA deals are made that can't actually take effect for weeks.  Does any reasonable person believe that the rules are good things for the league?  I don't give a f about MLE, or Bird Rights, or max, super max, etc.  Just have a cap and stay within it.  Let teams have a certain percentage that tehy can "write off" for keeping their own players, just to give them that edge.  Just make it better.

Horford & Embiid (when healthy) are a very good defensive pair.

As they say, the best offense is a good defense.

Do they really still say that?  I'd rather try to put up 150 PPG and take my chances that I won't give up that many.

Horford is the Embiid safety policy, and an expensive one in as Al don't really like to play the 5.

Pat Riley sold Jimmy on being a star in Miami. Sadly, he'll have to beat up Whiteside in week 5.

Haven't the last few team that won the championship been the better team defensively?

Super smart, imo.

They might not be getting max money, but that's still a nice payday that I wouldn't complain about. Plus they make room for the 3rd signing to make the team better.

Former NFL exec says NFL salary cap is softer than NBA

Excerpt:

Quote

True NBA superstars almost always reach the free marketplace; true NFL superstars almost never do. Why? Well, NFL teams are smart, both collectively through CBA negotiations and individually through player contract negotiations. Collectively the NFL has negotiated a way to keep most of the labor force relatively underpaid, with rookies signing mandatory four-year fixed and undervalued rookie contracts, with no ability to renegotiate for three years. By the time a player is eligible for his second contract, he has been underpaid for three years, often with roughly $1 million scheduled for his fourth year in the league. That is when NFL teams pounce to secure players long-term on contracts that are one-way (for the team) past the early, low-risk years. How do I know? I see it all the time and well, I was the one pouncing in the past.

Let’s debunk the myth about the NFL having a “hard cap” and the NBA having a soft one. Both are soft, and the NFL cap is even softer (a yarmulke, as I say).

Yes, the NBA cap allows exceptions that give teams flexibility to exceed the cap: Bird rights, midlevel exceptions, etc. But the NFL has a much simpler way for teams to exceed the cap: the proration of signing bonuses, allowing teams to spend cash while spreading cap over the life of contracts and renegotiations. To clarify: NFL teams can spend well above the cap on a year-to-year basis while staying under it. That, my friends, is a soft cap.

For example, Aaron Rodgers’s extension with the Packers—which included a $57.5 million signing bonus—included a 2018 cap number of $21 million and a 2018 cash number of…$67 million. That $46 million difference in cash over cap—for just one player—shows how NFL teams can go “over the cap” from a cash spending point of view. And the Packers spent roughly $205 million last season on a cap of $177 million. With this ability to go tens of millions of dollars over the cap number on one player, there is nothing “hard” about the NFL salary cap.

Furthermore, NBA teams have three restrictions that NFL team do not: (1) maximum contracts, (2) a luxury tax, and (3) no ability to roll over cap from year to year. Maximum contracts limit the earning power of the most elite players, and the luxury tax—while not prohibiting teams from overspending—has a deterrent effect that NBA owners mention frequently in their spending decisions. As to cap rollover from one year to the next, NFL teams can bring unused cap room forward to the next season; NBA teams do not have that luxury (and most teams spend all their cap room anyway).

Dragic is not going to Dallas.

Warriors working on a sign and trade for DeAngelo. Iggy is probably gone now, too.

EXIT: Iggy to the Grizzlies.
