Funny how losing KD makes the Warriors look mortal again.

Am I missing something? (not a huge NBA guy), but the Warriors won 73 games WITHOUT KD. What makes this different?

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

They just picked up young max-level talent to keep Steph steady until Klay comes back. It's the potential difference between 35 and 47 wins next season, or getting into the playoffs and giving Klay a chance, or missing altogether.

If they keep Dray in 2020, it also locks them into Steph/Klay/DLo/Dray plus picks and minimums for a long time.

And if DLo doesn't work out, he's incredibly tradeble. It also means DLo isn't going to the Lakers.

The Warriors won big tonight. Why the Nets made that trade, I don't know.

I also really like what the Pacers did. If Oladipo comes back as good as he left, watch out.

Wait - so these moves are done, but can't be talked about for another 5 days?  How stupid is that?  How can anyone defend the stupidity of a league that knowingly allows players to be drafted by (and photographed in the hats of) teams they know they'll never play for, negotiate with FAs and agree with them but not be able to sign them for a week, and have all these other loopholes?

I know the NHL has some weird cap rules too that regularly result in teams bringing in local goalies every now and then rather than call up guys from the minors, but this is ridiculous.  All these big deals and nobody can talk about it for a week

Former NFL exec says NFL salary cap is softer than NBA

Excerpt:

Ironically, it's the sport with out a salary cap that manages to keep players the most underpaid - MLB.  How long does it take to reach arbitration?  And even when you do, you never get what you're worth on the open market.  Rhys Hoskins is by far the Phillies best hitter, and has been for the last 3 seasons, but makes like 500K, while most of the guys around him are making millions, including Bryce Harper's ~26M.  He won't get paid for another couple of years, and even then won't get close to what he'd be worth on the open market.

The problem is that you're paid for what you've done, not for what you're going to do, resulting in veterans getting paid too much while younger players don't get enough.  Kinda goes for every sport (and maybe every walk of life... how many people take less at a job than what they've been getting, even if they're old and tired and don't work as hard (not that I know about getting old and tired and lazy... I'm talking about friends, obv.)

I hate when people complain about the NFL and their "one-sided" contracts, because it's actaully the players who created that situation by working in the signing bonuses as a method of circumventing (to an extent) the cap, and guaranteeing money to the top guys, and screwing over their middle and lower-end guys.  If I was an average NFL player I'd be very pissed with the union, while the top guys obviously love the system.  Any hate against NFL contracts is unwarranted IMO.

I'm going to go outside and yell at a cloud now.

Horford is the Embiid safety policy, and an expensive one in as Al don't really like to play the 5.

Supposedly one of the reasons Horford walked away from Boston, besides the fact that they (probably rightly) didn't want to give him 4 years, is that he doesn't want to play center anymore. He seems too good and expensive to be a sixth man, even one who'd start often given Embiid's medicals. An Embiid/Horford/Harris/Richardson/Simmons starting five feels weird and duplicative to me, but they can make it work, particularly if they can find another shooter and bump Richardson to the bench. Horford will also be outstanding as a veteran leader intangibles guy so that's a big plus too.

I do suspect Boston didn't expect to have a Kemba-level replacement for Kyrie, and if they had known that that deal would work out then maybe they would've been more amenable to holding onto Horford from the start.

Russell's nothing special.

He's no KD, that's for sure. But he's a nice stopgap in the meantime while Klay recovers. This is a move that keeps the Warriors at least somewhat competitive for next season.

All things considered, the Warriors did ok for themselves considering they just lost a generational talent.

I think that's really more of a logistics issue. Your third best goalie should be starting in the AHL instead of sitting around for the 1 in 500 chance that the starter and backup are both hurt. Also, teams won't use a roster/lineup spot for that guy when you could have another skater there.

The negotiating period in the NBA and NHL isn't perfect, but I think it generates a big splash on the day free agency actually opens, and the leagues probably don't mind that.

Not enough is being said about how a year after LeBron signed in the west, all of a sudden free agents are headed east. Weird how that didn't happen in the prior 15 years.

Another interesting collision of the wink-wink free agency start date and the obsession with Twitter is that we get to see the messiness of these deals in real time, everything being shakily improvised with duct tape -- i.e. this Butler to Miami sign-and-trade, which got widely disseminated before it was actually put together into a workable form. Entertaining to watch if you enjoy chaos, as I do. But maybe not actually useful as information.

Seth Curry and Pat Beverley have signed 4-year deals. Good for them, but bad for the Lakers; they were minimum/MLE targets/backup options pending Kawhi.

I'd love to see the Lakers' backup plan if Kawhi falls through. Surely they were aware all of the tier 1 and most of the tier 2 guys would be gone by now.

Woj just updated that the Nets will get a first-rounder:

It also seems to bolster their reputation of doing right by players and their agents.

The shock is wearing off and I'm getting more and more excited about this. It was a little bittersweet at first - it's the end of the lovable, scrappy underdog team I've enjoyed watching over the last few years, and Kyrie's personality and KD's achilles are both huge red flags, but I'm coming around to all of it being a worthwhile risk to take with the title potentially up for grabs for the next few seasons. We gave up a young all-star, but we didn't mortgage our future the way we did in the Celtics trade, and I don't think D'Angelo's ceiling is anywhere close to Kyrie's current level.

The reputation thing is a big deal. The Knicks are cleaning up right now in mid-tier guys, but they still can't get a meeting with the guys who win titles.

I think the Nets made the absolute right move. At the worst, Kyrie's knees fall apart and KD never plays again. At best, they win a title or two, or at least the east. It's super high risk, but incredibly high reward too. And they'll make a ton on merchandising.

Marc Stein says the Warriors will move D-Lo, but I'm curious to see who will need him in December or so, and what they'd be willing to give up. The Lakers don't have anything and the Warriors aren't going to take on Andrew Wiggins. I could see a deal with Toronto for Lowry and stuff if Kawhi leaves (or even if he stays!)....and now I wish I hadn't said anything. Can you imagine Toronto with DLo, Kawhi, Siakam and Gasol? That's not a bad playoff team.

Enes Kanter will be in Boston for two years. Okay.

I thought about it, and think DLo for Kevin Love makes the most sense.

And the GD Warriors win again :(
