Is this the first time the Oklahoma City Thunder are irrelevant? It feels like they've always been in the mix of things since they relocated from Seattle. This will be a first for their fans.

I remember their first year in OKC they didn't win a lot of games but I also remember it being pretty clear at the time that eventually Durant and Westbrook were going to be really, really good together.  I don't remember if they had Ibaka or Harden at that point, though.

If you thought Paul and Harden couldn’t get along just wait, and with George reportedly being upset with Westbrook. I see this Rockets era blowing up in their faces soon. A ticking time bomb. I don’t even see how this move makes them better, not in the short or long term. But for the thunder, big winners, while Paul isn’t great for the team, they can always either ship him off again, or let his contract expire and let him walk, giving them some cap and they also own like every pick.

I can’t believe Lillard waved goodbye to a whole era (the first, and quite a great one) of Thunder Basketball

I believe there are rules such that you can only get so many consecutive picks from X team, so even if it won’t make sense in theory, the swap option is the best you can get as the receiving teams in some years (and hey, you never know what’ll go wrong in this modern NBA).

So the odds are that none of the swap options will ever actually be executed

There is a limit on how far in advance a team can trade draft picks. The limit is seven years.

That’s where I’m at with it. They made a bit of a lateral move that might be an even worse fit for them, AND they have up two extra first rounders to do it. This feels like a bit of a panic move on Morey’s part.

Been watching some Summer League highlights (which I don't normally do) and I finally get what all the fuss is about with Tako Fall.

Guy's a damn monster (or rather MonStar).

I know exceptionally tall guys usually have a very short lifespan in the league, but I think signing him is worth the risk.

His rebounding & blocking are just absolutely insane. Really is crazy this guy wasn't drafted at all.

We're talking about things that aren't the Celtics.

On paper, it makes sense to have two of three recent MVPs on your team. Maybe less so when they're incredibly ball dominant and have a habit of sitting on their thumbs when they don't have the ball.

Grayson Allen got eject in Summer League with two flagrants in a seven-second span. It's GD Summer League! That's the only noteworthy thing to happen in Summer League because it's so baffling. I guess if somebody were to do it, it would be Grayson Allen.

Dan Dakich didn't mince words on the broadcast.

Ruocco: I have to tell you Dan- it mystifies me how anyone can defend what he does when it happens time and time again with him.

Dakich: It’s just tiresome. It’s just tiresome. Let’s be honest. Duke defended him ad nauseam.

Ruocco: Oh my gosh, yes.

Two ball dominant personalities on the same team can only go so well. Sure, Harden and Westbrook have played together, but that was when Harden was the third ranger and before he began his scintillating performance with Houston.

I don't see this lasting too long before Russ gets traded again.

OKC wants them picks. And also they prefer to trade within the conference, apparently. If they can't win, neither can any of their opponents.

It's a shame they couldn't have three-team traded Westbrook. Paul won't be on OKC at the end of the 19-20 season (and maybe even not the beginning). I think CP3 would have been better served in a place like Detroit.

Morey's whole deal is to put good talent together and let them figure it out, but Westbrook and Harden are the two highest-usage guys, right? What the hell is going to happen there?

D'Antoni is a lame duck coach on his last year of his contract, will Tillman Fertitta fire him during the season?

Tbh Dan Dakich is a terrible announcer and sports show host and I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone continues to give him a platform to express his views on basketball.

Maybe so, but I think we also need to follow the smoke of a couple weeks back, which said that Harden and Paul really did not get along well. Even if this is a lateral-ish move on the court, there was no locker room animus on those early Thunder teams that I'm aware of, so maybe you make this trade and hope you catch lightning in a bottle if the alternative looks like your star players pouting and fighting all year.

NBA is the worst sports league.  How the hell can you be a fan of OKC when the team doesn't want the player, the player doesn't want to be there, and they're basically just saying they're resigned to making it work for a year?  Why in the world would you cheer for that team or get invested in any way, shape, or form?

The impossible to figure out CBA has made things nearly impossible to figure out, makes trades super confusing, results in guys being drafted even though everyone knows they aren't going to play there, and players reluctantly taking $40M to play out a season with some team.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27210295/thunder-attempts-move-paul-stall

"The Thunder made the trade with Houston to accommodate Westbrook's wishes, but ensuing talks with Paul and his representatives found two sides sharing a belief that a season together could be beneficial to both, sources said."

" Paul has warmed to the idea of the Thunder as a landing spot for the year"

"Thunder general manager Sam Presti welcomes the idea of Paul playing for his franchise this season"

Rough predictions for playoff teams. Outside the playoffs, who cares. And obviously midseason trades and injuries will blow this all to hell anyway, so what's the point? In each conference, but especially the east, I think we're dealing with two clear contenders, three or four solid good teams, and two or three quick playoff exits.

East:

1. Bucks

2. Sixers

3. Pacers

4. Nets

5. Raptors

6. Celtics

7. Heat

8. Pistons

West:

1. Clippers

2. Rockets

3. Blazers

4. Lakers

5. Nuggets

6. Jazz

7. Warriors

8. Mavs

Paul George will miss the first month or so and Kawhi will be playing 2 out of every 3 games. I think the Clippers will be very good in the playoffs at full strength, but they'll be playing a chunk of their initial games with an effectively worse lineup that last year (no Gallinari, SGA, PG or Kawhi). I think they'll be a top 4 seed in the west, but not the 1.
