We’re two hours in and I’ve already seen so many takes that are so bad, I’m developing sympathy for LeBron and the Lakers for the first time in my life.

This actually makes me have even less sympathy for them.

Since it's clear they're trying to buy a championship. Rather than building a team around the talent they have.

At least the Warriors had guys like Curry, Thompson, & Green. THEN Durant decided to be a bitch.

I absolutely loathe the whole "philosophy" of ":censored: it, let's just buy all the top player we can". Nothing about winning a championship like that feels earned or deserved. And i love nothing more than when it blows up in teams faces. Which hopefully it will for the Lakers.

The Lakers had no talent to build around. Brandon Ingram is another Caron Butler. Lonzo Ball is a homeless man's Jason Kidd. Josh Hart is literally nothing.

That's like saying the Celtics should have stuck with Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, and Delonte West instead of making the trades for Garnett and Ray Allen.

The Lakers leveraged assets to improve their team. Just like the Raptors did. Given how much they gave up, this is hardly "buying" a team.

Oh come on. Our team did the same thing with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and Kyrie Irving. Their roster isn’t good enough so they’re making moves to get the best players to improve it.

Then that's there own fault for drafting so horribly.

And Celtics already had a decent team before the Garnett & Allen trades. But those trades are what got them over the hump to a championship team.

The 2 aren't even comparable.

Toronto was already a playoff team before the Kawhi trade. That just put them over the top. And they didn't lose that much to get him, unlike The Lakers.

That's more comparable to the Garnett/Allen trade.

Tell me, with Lebron & now AD, assuming they get say, Kyrie & Butler in FA, how many players is that they just signed vs. how many they actually drafted?

You mean the era of 30-win Celtics teams?

33 wins in 05-06, 24 wins in 06-07. That is not 'decent'. Jefferson couldn't defend anyone and was a complete non-factor if he wasn't the one getting buckets, and he never developed beyond that in Minnesota, Utah, Charlotte, or anywhere else. It took Gerald Green several years (including being out of the league for a bit) to even become an acceptable role player. West was a 3-and-D guard who wasn't particularly great at either. That team had no future whatsoever.

NBA teams build through the draft and through free agency. Trading your draft picks is still building through the draft, just in a different way.

You want the Lakers to stay at 36 wins to win your purity test? That's dumb.

They made the ECF in 02.

Plus again, those horrible Celtics teams still built around guys like Paul Piece, Rajon Rondo, & Kendrick Perkins.

In 02, a whole 5 years before the trades from KG and Allen, literally the only person from the 02 team still around was pierce, after that walker got traded and then the rest of the team fell apart until Danny ainge made the Big 3

This seems like one of those trades that could end up panning out for both sides. For the Lakers, in a suddenly wide-open West, they have relevance again, especially if they sign Kemba or another max guy. For the Pelicans, they get to fully build around Zion without trying to appease AD or worry about how the two will fit together.

Seemed clear that Lonzo and BI needed fresh starts as well from LA. Don’t know too much about Josh Hart, but adding three first rounders (one of them No. 4 overall at that) to Zion, Lonzo, and BI is really good.

Point is they built around young players that they already had (Pierce, Rondo, Perkins).  Garnett & Allen were just the pieces that put them over the top.

Lakers are getting rid of everything they have in a pathetic attempt to be the real life version of the Monstars.

It's a cheap, lazy, undeserving way to win a championship.

Next season is going to be fun though. Very unpredictable.

That it is.  The injury to Klay Thompson is going to drastically affect the Warriors to the point where they may be fighting for the 8th seed when he comes back.

This is a poor take. My goodness, and revisionist to boot lol.

You’re acting like the Celtics had a solid, borderline playoff young core prior to KG and Allen. The Celtics were terrible with that “core”. KG and Allen turned them into a title contender, not just simply “got them over the hump.”

Kawhi and the Raptors is an actual example of what you’re describing. Perennial playoff contender who added a superstar to get them over the hump.

By the way, your only championship in the last 30 years was done in the exact same way you’re complaining about lol.

Sooo.

Exactly. Warriors added Durant, Cavs added Love/LBJ, Raptors added Leonard, etc. They're going to end up paying 2-3 guys max contracts and build around them with scraps.

If it was the "exact same way", then remind me again what young homegrown talent the Lakers are building around?

The 2 are nothing alike because 1 team kept their core and built around them, while the other blew it up in favor of signing some flashy big names.

The West is still incredibly wide-open with the Warriors gone. This just bolsters the Lakers' chances of making it out of there alive.

Alive to be curbstomped by Milwaukee or Toronto, of course.

We might want to pump the brakes a bit on this stance for now. Klay is going to be out for a stretch, and who even knows what’s going to happen with KD, but it’s not like they were just a bunch of lucky schlubs in some middling market. They’ve still got a two-time MVP and one of the best shooters in the league in Steph, are just about to move into a brand new billion dollar building in one of the most well known cities in the country, and are coming off of five consecutive Finals appearances that led to three titles and had them raking in cash hand over fist. You’re probably not being very wise if you think they’re just going to fade off into obscurity and not try to make a big splash this off season.

But, who knows? They might just let EVERYONE take next year off. Tank for a draft pick, and come back in year two in The City with dynasty 2.0 😝
