NCAA considering postseason ban for California schools if amateurism reform passes

Recommended Posts

If Emmert's going to attempt his version of the Battle of the Bulge, let him wait until after the first of the year.  I'd like my cousin to have a shot at finishing her collegiate career with 3 national titles and perhaps a third straight NPOY without him pulling the postseason ban crap immediately after Newsome puts pen to paper.

I can't find a link, but there's a story on ESPN with Tim Tebow on First Take. The headline is "Tebow defends status quo." 😂

As expected, Tebow does a bunch of boot-licking about "no I in team" and passion of college football fans. He also has a higher-pitched voice than I expected.

I'm in phone, but I did see it on Twitter via CBS Sports Gary Parrish who also commented on Tim was nonsensical with his point.

We also had ESPN on ESPN crime with Jay Bilas, Mike Golic, Sr. and Keith Oblerman taking a shot at Tebow.

Former athletes like Seth Joyner, Darrelle Revis, Matt Bonner (fellow Gator) and Donte Stallworth also took him to task on that First Take post.  Heck, even FredEx chimed in.

It wouldn't take effect until 2023.

Has Newsom signed it yet?

The fact it has taken this long to institute something like this at the state level, is absurd.

The Olympic model is probably the best short term solution. Needs improvement long term.

Not yet. The legislative session just ends today.

Procedurally, he doesn't have to.

Gov. Newsom has 30 days to sign or veto the bill. If he takes no action, the bill would become law. Doing nothing is unlikely since a ceremony signing a bill like this is significant news.

Has anyone gotten more mileage out of what they did in college than Tim Tebow?

He’s a failed minor leaguer who hasn’t played a down of football in almost a decade now, and ESPN is still dragging the guy out here as if his opinion is still relevant because some higher up on their production team has a hard-on for all things Tebow.

Florida made money off of me and I was person better for it sounds about as Uncle Tomish as you can get.

I said it when he was in his "prime" and I'll repeat it now. There isn't a single high profile athlete I've ever disliked more than Tim Tebow. I can't wait till that clown goes away for good. What an absolute sham that guy has ALWAYS been.

Because Tebow is the right-wing Kaepernick. He pisses off the half of the country that likes Kaep and angry people tend to want to view whatever makes them angry.

And on the flip side, the people that hate Kaep love Tebow so they'll tune in. Media loves stories that get people riled up.

Or, they love to sell people on things they love, things that make them angry and things that make them sad.

This isn't a left-right thing. Tebow is just acting like a clown.

I don't disagree with that assessment at all. I was just saying why the hell ESPN would still bother bringing this guy back.

And yes, he is a clown. Hence why he's getting brought out.

This number of jerseys actually sounds low.  Granted, my brother, for example, always buys #7 for Danny Weurfell.

Rovell is calculating royalties at 5% of the wholesale price/jersey.

And there is this little nugget too.

XV Enterprises was started by Tim's older brother, Robbie.

Ah, yes  the power of Tebow: back when kneeling down was "cool"

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday:

Quote

“We’ll take a good look. If you looked at my record as lieutenant governor on the issue of athleticism -- what was happening at UC Berkeley, being a student-athlete myself – I have very strong opinions on this subject, and you’ll be hearing more about that in the next few days.”

True, but considering the relative scarcity of big-time college football in New York (totally absent from the city and rare enough in the rest of the state), we aren’t the existential threat to the NCAA posed by a state like California.

Well, remember the NCAA doesn't sponsor FBS football as a championship, but the Men's Basketball is where they receive the bulk (~80%) of their operating revenue.  Taking out Syracuse and the mid-major schools who make the tournament on occasion (St. Bonaventure, St. John's, Buffalo or MAAC winner) from the tournament, or MSG, Key Bank Arena, or Barclays as a venue will impact them.

NCAA has basically had a half century to deal with this but decided to be reactive, not proactive.

Maryland was another state which had similar legislation in committee this session, but began their session in January and only meets for 90 days.

Their session ended two months BEFORE this thread was even created.  Expect Maryland to try again now that one has SB206 passed.

As for a total number of states so far either with legislation or drafting legislation, I believe is at 8.
