Should NHL Playoff Division winners hang a banner

Recommended Posts

Should NHL teams hang a banner if they won their Division in Postseason Play? (Real life example question: Should the 2018-2019 Carolina Hurricanes put a banner for Metro Division Postseason Champions since they represented the Metro in the Eastern Conference Finals)

I think banners for any reason whatsoever should be completely and totally outlawed in hockey. I only want to see stark, unpainted, brutalist Soviet era construction style concrete walls.

Anything else is an affront to stickgames played on ice and an insult to the original Canadian inventors.

No.  Since they don't align the playoffs with four separate division "regions" (to use NCAA hoops terminology), I don't think there is a "division playoff champ." Particularly since it is possible  for two teams from the same division to meet in the conference finals and/or the "last team standing" from a division may be a two-team tie (right?).  In the 1980s they did start with divisional playoffs (top four teams from each 5-team or 6-team division).  Even then, I would not support a "division playoff champs" banner.

The silly playoff structure doesn't make it a true divisional tournament so I say no.

I think you should only hang a banner if the achievement resulted in a trophy. Banners that are acceptable:

Stanley Cup Champions, Conference Champions, President's Trophy because that thing is hard to win and is an achievement regardless of what happens in the playoffs. (unless you're the 2019 Tampa Bay Lightning where that banner will become a giant flashing neon sign reminding them forever of their embarrassing failure. if they hang one they better hang it at 3am when nobody's in the building and never ever show it on the big screen during games.)

I could be talked into Division Champions for the regular season since being the best out of 7/8 teams over an entire 82 game season is tough, but don't put "REGULAR SEASON" on the banner. Also I think maybe it's best to make this an understated banner with space to add future years' championships.

Banners that are not acceptable, but have been raised by teams - things that didn't ultimately result in winning anything and/or require a long explanation:

Playoff Participant, Conference finalist (Colts), Division Playoff Champion, Regular Season Western/Eastern Conference Champion, Attendance Champions, Wildcard.

I think it really depends on the success of the franchise.

Detroit Red Wings? No.

Columbus Blue Jackets? Sure.

This reminds me of when Kansas won yet another regular season Big XII title and Bill Self said they don't even raise banners for regular season titles. I don't know if that's necessarily true (I have yet to inspect the banners in Lawrence), but I found it interesting because most teams probably would. Mid-to-low tier teams in major conferences probably would, and basically any mid-major conference team would as well, I bet.

I swear at this point, The Maple Leafs are going to hang a banner celebrating that they made it past the 1st round of the playoffs, when it happens.

I’m game for Stanley Cups, conference championships, and retired numbers only. No division titles or playoff appearance/series winning banners. Also, only put up a President’s Trophy banner if a finals appearance follows.

No they got a cup. Once you win a cup/your leagues championship you shouldn’t hand divisional champ banners

Might as well have banners for highest attendance by that logic.

Doesn't Nebraska football do this every week in their press notes for their consecutive sellouts?

Honestly, I don't think that should matter (no offence meant in pointing out your response).

I say it's either the league championship banner or nothing for all sports, but to stay to the NHL as this thread is for I only want to see Stanley Cup banners, nothing else.

The rest is "we didn't win it all but we did ok".

As it is now? No. But if they eliminated the wild card and had true divisional playoffs, I would ban regular season division champs banners and only have playoff division champions. It might be unpopular, but in this scenario I would probably give trophies to the division winners and no additional ones until the Stanley Cup.

Easy...banners for regular season division titles, conference titles, and league titles.  The Rays made banners for the Wild Card playoff berths and i thought that was a little questionable.

But then by the time you win a cup, it could be seen as "tradition."

I'm totally ok with NHL banners for: Stanley Cups, Conference championships (post-season), President's Trophy, retired numbers

I'm not crazy about regular season Divisional Champ banners, but they're part of the league's tradition now, so it doesn't really bug me, either.

Things that you have no business hanging a banner for: anything else, but specifically attendance (to include consecutive sell-outs), post-season divisional champs (not a thing), regular-season conference champs (also not a thing, and certainly no if you also won the President's Trophy *glares at Predators*).

I get that "less storied" franchises are excited to hang some banners and are therefore more likely to cross these lines, but it just highlights the lack of success. A prime example are my team, the Predators. Yay, we got to hang three banners! I really hope that after we win a Cup, they take down the Western Conference Regular Season Champions banner. This isn't the AHL, where you get a trophy for that. It's tacky.

Conference Championships and the PT, generally, but I will burn Amalie to the ground if the Lightning hang a PT banner from this past season. Maybe retroactively if they redeem themselves and win the Cup next year.

so y'all are saying that regular season division champions are more important than postseason division champions (if they are not the RS division champion) if they represent their division in the Conference finals and lose?

I don't have a problem with division champion banners in football and baseball where that actually means something. But in basketball and hockey, where half the league makes the playoffs, they're tantamount to participation trophies.
