Jeez, their uniforms aren't THAT bad. Only so much you can do with a tiger themed team. At least it's unique and not some generic uniform with standard geometric striping, which some people on these boards wish every team would adopt. Plus the helmet is one of the more creative in the league.

The helmet, pants and the sleeves are good but the rest of the jersey needs some work.

So Uniwatch is with SI, now?  Who knew? (Probably all of you...)

I don't necessarily agree that it's the most polarizing helmet in the league...well, maybe it is because how many helmets are truly polarizing?  But I actually think it's generally well-liked.  It was definitely polarizing when it first came out, but I'm not sure that it is now.

To me, there is no way any of these designs will top the original 1981(?) design.  That was perfect...the update with the tiger on the sleeves was still a great uniform, but I thought the sleeve logo was overkill and the black stripes on the pants/shoulder became fewer and thicker...I liked it better before.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

There's SUCH an easy fix to the Bengals set.

Plain black jersey at home, white block numbers with an orange outline. Tiger striped collar and sleeve trim. Full tiger striped pants that basically match the helmet. Same for the road but with a white jersey. Boom. You're done.

All they really need to do is remove the White Side Panels, and change to a Block Font like their Color Rush Uniform. Maybe remove the curve off of the pants, but that doesn’t bother me that much.

Like many around here, I would like to see it tried. Not sure it could be pulled off without looking ridiculous, though. I think the use of stripes would have to be very minimal to avoid something like this:

YES. They absolutely need to at least give it a shot. Keep a white set with tiger stripes on the sides around just in case the all tiger striped pants are too much, but they should at least give it a go for awhile.

Part of the reason I thought they nailed it on their first attempt is not just the helmet, but the "tiger-stripe" trim.  To paraphrase @McCarthy from years ago, they did a good job looking like a team named after tigers; we don't want them to actually try to look like tigers.  I think the white side panels (reflective of the white belly of a tiger, correct?) was a step in that direction...fully striped pants, would be a leap in that direction.

I don't think they can top their 1980s look and I'd really like to see them bring it back, in whatever way it can work with today's templates...certainly the pants...maybe they'd have leave the shoulders close to what they have, but orange-outlined block numbers without the side panels would be so nice.

I haven’t read uniwatch in a few years, but using the term “polarizing” was generally one of Lukas’ ways of saying he hated something personally but others really like it.

He’s said the same thing in his rants about purple.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

yeah I think I said the 81-03 uniforms were football uniforms, the 04-present day (JEEZ LOUISE HOW HAVE THEY LASTED THIS LONG) are tiger costumes. Those super bowl uniforms took crazy elements and confined them to the usual spaces within a football uniform so it didn't go overboard with "hey we're tigers!" the way the currents do.

The helmet is the second best helmet in the history of the sport (behind the Rams), it looks sleek from any angle, instantly recognizable, the one cool thing about the franchise, players have said they actually look forward to wearing it for the first time when they join the Bengals. Any concept that changes the helmet immediately gets an F. When I look at Bengals concepts I start at the top and if the helmet is different I don't even bother looking at the rest.

Their best look won't win any Uniwatch Contests, but what they should do is - 80's uniforms, updated to the modern cut, some black pants to be used sparingly, either a block font or a sleeker custom number font (NOT THE CURRENT NUMBER FONT), and maybe the old leaping tiger logo on the chest above the number and make an orange alternate jersey. Done. Wear that until football dies.

Managed to mock this one up today. Tried going with colored numbers rather than white to make it feel different from their current set. Also tried to work in some tiger striping on the numbers and socks to give it some personality:

An improvement for sure.

Love the socks.  And I love that they use a stripe "motif" as opposed to trying to be full full tiger feet. I think white socks (think of the 1980s pants) with these stripes would look great.

No change to the helmet: Pass. (the helmet is only graded on a pass/fail...pass for keeping; fail for messing with)

Number font is an improvement.  But I find the stripes at the bottom to be gratuitous.

I am not a fan of the white collars on the orange and black jerseys.  They really stick out; plus, seeing the black stripes move from the orange shoulder to the white collar reminds me of the terrible pants transition they currently have.  What you have on the shoulders would look great on the pants (though with the socks, that might be overkill, so maybe your approach is better). So the pants are fine, though the leaping tiger (facing forward on both sides) would look better than the B.

The thing I am going back-and-forth on is the shoulders.  Given current jersey cuts, this might be the best solution.  The biggest problem they pose is the transition to the collar and, therefore, the color of the collar vs. the jersey.  Maybe they should not blend into the collar?

Is that a "B" on sone sleeve?  Or is the "B" on the left of each sleeve and the swoosh on the right?  Either way, I think that might be overkill with the shoulder stripes right above.

This is pretty solid overall though.

I'm not even bothered by the numbers. The curve on the pants is unnecessary and its introduction was a downgrade, but I can live with it. The stripes are awesome, the helmets are awesome, just drop the white side panel (home whites look GRRRRRR-EAT) and you're golden.

EDIT: All attempts I've seen (even the valiant one above) to keep the stripes within some sort of panel just feels dated and a clear downgrade to me.

I had no idea the helmet was polarizing; I cannot imagine the Bengals sans that helmet!  If I had to guess which NFL helmet is most polarizing I'd say Seattle or Tampa.

IMO the Bengals' current set is a few little tweaks away from looking really nice!

here's what they would look like with ...

-no white side panels on jerseys

-no white at top of pant stripes

-no contrasting nameplate / shoulders on the roads

-no drop shadow (I guess I'm in the minority who thinks their font goes with their look)

-lack of black pant alts at home

Well since we're all just shameless-plugging away, here's mine from about seven (!) years ago.
