MLS Beer League [concept series]

Real Salt Lake

I went back to what I consider RSL's basics: red shirt with blue sleeves, blue shorts, red socks.

The sponsor is Uinta Brewing, makers of RSAle, a collaboration with the club.

Change

Since RSL's had an overabundance of all-white change kits over the years, I changed it up and went with an emphasis on yellow and red.

Only a few more of the existing teams to go.

San Jose Earthquakes

Primary

This is an MLS kit hill on which I'm willing to die:  the Quakes need to stop playing DC-dressup and go back to blue/black/blue.  Here I give you that combination with a tonal diagonal stripe pattern to match the stripes on the logo.  (I thought about doing the whole quake pattern with the horizontal stripes as well, but they've done that before.)

The sponsor is Berkeley-based The Rare Barrel.

After finishing this grey-and-black kit, I realized I'd unintentionally created a Raiders tribute.  But I like the look.

Seattle Sounders

Primary

As with many teams, this is pretty standard fare for the Sounders.  Why reinvent the wheel when it's perfectly round already?

The sponsor here is local brewery Cloudburst Brewing.  (The Sounders have a partnership with Elysian, but they're owned by ABInBev, so I passed, despite liking their Space Dust IPA.)

Change

The change is a basic all-white number with teal trim, the same color as on the city flag of Seattle.

Why not Budweiser for either New York team? Or Sam Adams for the revolution?

Because...

All the teams (save one; you'll see) will have a local brewery as their shirt sponsor.

The criteria for choosing each team's sponsor was based on a few loose criteria:

  • Preference was given to independent breweries, not owned by a major conglomerate.
  • Preference was given to breweries having partnered with the team or a supporters group to create a team-specific beer.
  • If no partnership (or I didn't like it), I looked up local beer rankings.
  • In the end, I picked what I picked, so nyah. :)

OP: Preference was given to independent breweries, not owned by a major conglomerate.

Blast, beat me to it.

How do I delete?

Toronto FC

Basic all-red for Toronto here with a "T" detail modified from the city flag.

The sponsor is Red Thread Brewing, who have collaborated with the Red Patch Boys on a couple of beers.

Toronto has tended to use the dark gray from their logo for their change strips, and this one is no different.

Vancouver Whitecaps

Primary

The inclusion of the chest stripe this year showed me that this team really needs to keep it full time, though wrapping it around to the back doesn't really work well.

The sponsor is local brewery Brassneck.

Yeah, I know that a palette swap is kinda lazy.  In this case, I don't care.  These are, to me, two classic Whitecaps looks.

----------

So that's primary and change kits for all of the currently-playing teams.  As I mentioned earlier, I'm working on third kits for all of the teams, as well as working up looks for the future teams that have been announced: Austin, Miami, and Nashville.

Who likes their third kits with an extra helping of crazy?  Good, because that's where we're starting off.

Atlanta United

Between the usual red/black stripes and the white/peach stripes, there wasn't much room within the regular Atlanta color set to fit in a third that was different enough to justify its existence.  So I took some inspiration from the Atlanta Hawks' lime green jerseys from the 70s which were brought back as "Hardwood Classics" a while back.  Crazy?  Totally and completely.  But they'd definitely be memorable.

Here's the full Atlanta set:

Chicago Fire

The third is inspired by Chicago Fire Department gear, complete with reflective yellow and silver.

Colorado Rapids

The Rapids have had a number of kits loosely based on the Colorado state flag, so here's another one.

Columbus Crew

Yeah, sorry, I went all-white for this one; though, with yellow and black being the other two, this is the only thing that made much sense.  Kept the checker pattern on the shirt.

Incredible series, love every concept so far. What template are you using for the kits?

I'd probably go with vertical stripes similar to one of their older looks which was a white shirt with yellow stripes trimmed in black.

DC United

Red vs blue is all the rage in US politics, so for a team based in DC, why not mix the two?

The game jerseys had wider stripes but that's it. For some reason I thought there were more stripes.
