When I saw the title, I figured the'd go with the current trend of going completely boring... but they didn't.  This is actually a significant upgrade, simplifying while still being interesting.

No because when the Irish came to Ireland and first came in contact with the leprechaun people, they didn't take their land away and force them to move west. Instead, the two groups learned to assimilate peacefully. However, certain tribes of the leprechaun refused to taint the pure blood and moved north into the forests of Ireland, only to be seen rarely, usually at the same time of a rainbows appearance and occasionally at the factories of Lucky Charms.

why are these ugly things still around?

Believe it or not, they actually have a full line of shoes, and not just the molded rubber ones. I wear a pair of canvas slip-on loafers to the office every day. They're wicked comfy and pretty solid quality.

Because they are cheap

There not actually that cheap for being a thick piece of rubber... But it's a look. They're nice to just slip on and off, making decent shoes for walking, better than flip-flops, but just as laid back. Plus they're actually not that bad looking. I know a lot of people who wear them and can pull them off
