UNC tracking student-athlete class attendance through third-party beacon tech

Quote

The University has launched a pilot program that uses beacon technology to track the attendance of select student-athletes.

This automated attendance monitoring software, produced by SpotterEDU and implemented during the first week of classes, allows a Bluetooth signal to be transmitted to the smartphones of student-athletes through a downloaded app, in order to confirm the phone is within range of each classroom’s Bluetooth device.

Citing student privacy reasons, the University declined to comment on which teams are currently participating in the program.

A former UNC football player, who requested to remain anonymous, confirmed along with former teammates that they were informed of this technology and instructed to download the app at a team meeting. He said previous attendance methods were fairly inconsistent and primarily involved a team representative who would occasionally go to different classes to make sure players were there.

“My guess is that, with a new coach and a kind of all-new administration, is that they’re trying to crack down on athletes and academics,” he said. “I imagine it’s just an attempt to be stricter and hold people accountable through that lens.”

In an email to The Daily Tar Heel, Peters Denny said the provost’s office is heading the program in cooperation with UNC Athletics.

“The University has long had an attendance policy for student-athletes, which can include class checking. This new pilot is simply an effort to make the program more efficient through using new technology,” Peters Denny said.

A similar technology is being used on campus for the student body through an app called UNC Check-In. Created by UNC professor Viji Sathy and ITS Teaching & Learning, the app was created to help taking and keeping track of attendance in large lecture classes more feasible. Sathy said she has received positive feedback from both faculty and students since its launch in spring 2018, with no complaints of invasiveness.

Both UNC Check-In and SpotterEDU use beacon technology to record attendance. Whereas SpotterEDU has an automated check-in and is currently geared only to student-athletes, UNC Check-In requires students to manually check in once they are in range of the Bluetooth device in their classroom.

UNC media law professor Tori Ekstrand, faculty co-director of the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy, contacted King after learning of the devices on social media. Even though she said she is horrified by this technology, she said she is not surprised, given the scrutiny the athletics department is under.

Ekstrand said she was shocked faculty had not been notified about this change and believes this raises questions surrounding the legality of surveillance without notice. Still, the lack of communication reflects a larger lack of discussion about increasing surveillance  — there is currently not an effective set of state or federal law to address this, Ekstrand said.

“It’s not that surveillance and feedback isn’t important – it is and this had been going on between instructors and the athletic department for years,” she said. “What happened last week is emblematic of what’s happening in a lot of places, on a daily basis in a lot of different parts of our lives, and it is just happening without us having, really, good conversations about this.”

The Sun Devils have a 3-0 lead over Sacramento :censored:ing State at the half.

Thank God I decided to go to the drive-in tonight instead of to the Sac State bar to watch this :censored: game.

Nobody. The ONLY time I ever got PACN was when I lived in the ASU dorms. I moved two blocks from there a few years later and the cable company in Tempe didn’t even offer it.

Actually "Networks".  You have to carry the National one in addition to your specific, regional channel.

My local cable options both have Pac-12 Networks (National and NorCal), but I switched to DirecTV before the networks were announced and at the time, I actually did it for BTN.

*meekly raises hand* I have it.  Had to check and see but I do.  Never watched it though if that counts.

Also surprised ASU only beat lowly Sac State by 12...

YouTube TV has the Big 10 channel, the SEC Network, the ACC Network and I think even Longhorn via ESPN+.

But nope, no Pac-12. What a joke.

As of this week, ACC Network is not on the basic package in Tampa Bay (Spectrum), but SEC Network is.  I was in Tampa over Labor Day and while assisting Mom for a possible Dorian landing, ACCN was not on her package.

Pac-12 Network...It's profitable, but the individual school distribution compared to the Big Ten and SEC is minuscule.  Embarrassing to the point that Pac-12 chancellors/presidents are open to sell broadcast rights shares to private equity, rather than to sell out to a media/cable partner and not have more than 50% equity.  The DirecTV sale to AT&T put an additional doom on them as UVerse dropped them soon after the merger, thus losing 500K households, but over $5M in revenue.

I do know this, when FOX took the majority control of Big Ten Network, coverage of Olympic sports dramatically dropped and each university had a hour show about something academic which was quickly dropped.  Those university showcase shows aired from like 2-5AM, but they were great. FOX has also carried less of the student broadcast shows and "pivoted them to digital", which also stinks.  Seeing a Michigan/Indiana field hockey or Ohio State/Minnesota baseball game on midday live was kinda nice.

Larry Scott. Commissioner of the Pac Turd. Wonderful job he's done.

People disregard how inactive their previous leadership was. The majority of football and basketball wasn't on ESPN in the 2000's but Fox Sports Net.

Their previous commissioner, Tom Hansen, was no great shakes himself as he was there starting in 1982.

Georgia State currently down 17 to Furman, so I guess the posturing about the Paladins being tougher than Tennessee wasn't as ridiculous as I thought.

Also, UL-Freaking Monroe is up on Florida State halfway through the 4th.

EDIT: And FSU immediately scores to get back in front.

At least Florida State hasn't lost to an FCS team... yet.
