The Jersey looks fine to you because it's black, and thus, strengthening the case that those colors need black to work.

No, his contention was that they didn’t even work on black.  Take it up with him. 😉

No, that's not at all what I said. He actually had it right.

If this is true, they need a change (the person who designed the recent look should be in rehab).

If I was doing it, I would go back to the creamsicle look, but with the flag as the logo (no Bucco Bruce. That was another mistake). I would also have red pants on the road, not orange ones (like they had from 1992-96).

Okay, my apologies.  But that proves my point - the orange and red are fine against a dark background.  Like, say, pewter.  They don't need another stripe.

Unpopular opinion. I really like the current set except for the number font and oversized helmet logo. The rest is ok with me.

The 97-13 set is one of my all time favorite sets. I also see it as one of the perfect modernization updates to a uniform we've seen IMO. I loved the Creamsicle because it was what i knew as a kid and it had a very unique color in it's scheme creamsicle and the update with pewter as well. That being said the only redeeming thing about the current set was going back to the traditional shades of red and orange but the pewter has gone to crap because of the materials.

Ideally what needs to happen go with the white shell w/ previous logo in current colors with similar helmet stripes found on 97 concept with a pewter facemask.  Red jersey with orange outlined in pewter and creamsicle alt outline in red & trimmed in pewter, white jersey outlined in red & trimmed in pewter.     Two pants options being red and white.

The Pewter will almost act like black did the super bowl set.

For me, the problem with their identity is having way too many colors. I think it would look great if they went with just pewter, red and silver, similar to @nate.sweitz's Bucs concept. Not to say that the 1997-2013 wasn't good, (it was one of the best rebrands of the decade) but it's a bit too busy in terms of colors.

Great work @nate.sweitz ! That might be my favorite Bucs concept I've seen in a while.

The previous set was one of my favorites in football. The metallic pewter pants paired perfectly with the helmet. I liked the subtle orange number outlines, and I felt it the orange was more complimentary when paired with the darker red. It wasn't really that noticeable and in a way, it gives the numbers a little dimension. Both home and away sets looked great and each had nice color balance. I even liked the black as an accent color and it can work well with their identity if you think of the Jolly Roger flags on pirate ships. And I still prefer the tattered old logos as it feels more on-brand.

For the new set -- I'm against shoulder yokes, but that's more of a personal preference. The uniform looks so much cleaner without it. This color rush jersey works for me if you use a decent number font with it. With the loud helmet, a muted jersey would help to turn down the volume a bit, if you will.

As you mentioned, I don't think the current color scheme is very flattering for their primary sets with everything going on. It is essentially a grayish brown, a bright red, light orange, white, and a touch of silver. With the brighter red, the creamsicle feels like it's shoehorned in there. It clashes in my mind. While the pants are now that flat pewter, the helmet still has this brilliant, shiny metallic thing going. The helmet looks good by itself, but does not feel cohesive with the rest of the uniform (even though they tried with those reflective numbers). Like you said, there's just way too much going on. Makes you wonder if they need to go away from metallic pewter completely, or at least be like the Cowboys and outsource the pants to someone who can actually make the metallic pewter pants. I think an alternative is to tone down the metallic pewter helmet a bit so it's not so damn shiny. I wonder if HGI could make an interesting, yet subtle, cannonball-type finish.

Maybe a satin pewter version of something like this?

I disagree. Take their original road uniforms, for example. Even in still pictures the outline sort of blends together with the base of the number color and sort of muddies the whole look. From any distance and while in motion, those numbers were actually rather difficult to read.

See the source image

The biggest issue with that road look is that whenever they wore all-white, they looked very similar to the Chiefs from the neck down.

IMO, ditching the original orange numbers on the road was a mistake for the Bucs back then. Those helped set them apart from the rest of the league visually, while also tying in more closely with the orange-heavy home uniforms.

I'm not against the idea of the Bucs using more Black in their uniform, not because of BFBS, but because Buccaneers could or should be menacing pirates, not an orange-flavored ice cream pop.  And this floundering franchise needs to get its edge back.

Black jerseys over Tampa Bay Pewter pants, which at this point is essentially Nike's Anthracite, with Red/Black/Orange details is something that could potentially work, though it would be a drastic change and thus panned by many.  But it's not an easy solution either.

For jersey digit clarity, what they attempted to do with this uniform and the previous jersey had the correct idea, which was to have a tri-color number with a dual outline to separate the Red & Orange, which bleed together when next to each other.  Separate them with a line of black, or add Black for more contrast and weight, in theory, it works beautifully.  But applying it to football jerseys and TB's colors is challenging, which I really found out when trying this little exercise:

yitQ4G3.jpg

In many cases you just have to have Red & Orange next to each other.  It's not awful, it's just a design challenge.   Nike chose the right color combos for visibility on the Red jersey, and their White, as even trying some of the other combos on their jersey template for the Bucs just didn't work.  The reflective Grey outlines work and serve a purpose...they just blew it with the alarm clock font choice.

If they are getting new uniforms, though, I'd love to see the return of the Black facemask on the current helmet with a slightly smaller logo and perhaps more Black & TB Pewter in the uniform, allowing for the Red & Creamsicle Orange to really pop off of those dark colors.  To make it work realistically though, you'd probably need to keep some Silver & White in the uniform, and that makes things even busier.

Point is, the Bucs are essentially a 3-color team that requires the use of Black & White, making it a 4- or 5-color project...and one of the most complicated in the league.  I now better understand the choices they made in the current sets' numbers, I just feel that they ruined a strong look with the alarm clock font.

I never had a problem with black in the Bucs' 1997-2013 look. I think it worked because it was so restrained. They never rolled out a black jersey or pants. It was limited to logo detailing, stripes, and the facemask. It helped "ground" the design, in my opinion.

Looking back? Yeah, the 1997-2013 look had a lot of colours going on. Too many perhaps, by conventional wisdom. That being said? Every "rule" has exceptions, and I thought the Bucs' Super Bowl look made it work. As many colours as they had? They made use of them well. A huge part of that was that they kept black restrained, pewter to the pants and helmet, and orange to only the smallest of details. It never seemed like a lot because the uniforms never tried to do to much despite working with a relatively large palette.

The current look fails in part because it's taken pewter and orange- which originally worked in very specialized roles in the last set- and overuses them.

Black jerseys over Tampa Bay Pewter pants...

I think black works for them, but I would disagree when it comes to a black jersey. The Raiders own the black pirate look, in my opinion. The Buccaneers should instead embrace the red. Red jolly rogers were real and I think that allows them an avenue to explore the pirate theme without treading on the Raiders' turf too much. They shouldn't shy away from black, the 97-13 set made it work, but they shouldn't go overboard. Besides. Black jerseys in Tampa? Eek. They'd never wear them anyway.

Shameless plug, but I put my thoughts on the Bucs into concept form.

Here's an older take I had on the Bucs uniforms too! Not too complex but it allows for the creamsicle throwbacks while retaining some of the look from the 97 update.

I’d love to see the 97-13 uniforms on the 2019 Nike VUT template, matte fabrics, and new sock rule.

I think it would probably look outstanding.  Slight tweak to the number colors and they’d probably be great today.

I'm a Bucs apologist as well, but I love the giant helmet logo. It's one of the best parts if the identity IMO, so many helmet logos are too small which is exacerbated by helmet straps obstructing parts of many logos. Don't understand the hate for the big logo (the chrome and numbers are dumb IMO though).

Not exactly Vapor Untouchable, but here's how to looked in 2013 on the Nike Speed Machine Elite 51 Template. And I don't know if its the lighting, but the Pewter Pants actually look really good, despite being Matte rather than Dazzle Material. (Excuse the ****load of pictures)

Also,I used 2013 rather than 2012 Pictures, so that it wouldn't have the Toilet Seat Collar. The Buccaneers had the Ugly Flywire Black/Red Collar that sucked, along with half the league back then.

Thanks, I forgot that they wore these for 2 years in Nike.

Seeing them makes me recant my statement.  They don’t look bad, just dated in a plain, dull 90’s way.

The current uniform and especially helmet look slightly better.  It’s just the damn alarm clock number font that screws it up, and that’s where my opinion finishes up on the Bucs.

Man, the Bucs used to look so good before Nike. They could’ve kept the that set, even if they lost the black collar.

The could have even brought back the full Black Collar now, because the Nike VU Template doesn’t have the Flywire
