CS85 Posted May 18, 2020 Share Posted May 18, 2020 Just finished up the 10th episode. Pretty good stuff. I'm glad they gave the 1998 Indiana Pacers their due respect. Those late 90's/early 00's Pacers teams were among my all-time favorites, and they, the Jazz, and a few other squads that could've won rings in different eras all fell victim to playing in the Jordan/Kobe era. Jordan is a unique individual. There's no way most atheletes could handle the scope of worldwide popularity that Jordan had. The media presence alone looked inhuman, on the scale of Michael Jackson for the time, but then the expectations were beyond immense, even as he was at the extent of his powers. We probably won't see another cultural presence like Jordan again in our lifetimes. The social media and internet era we live in now can rarely ever perpetuate culture to the extent that it did back then, as people's interests and commonalities rarely line up or overlap. Billions of people on Earth knew and still know Michael Jordan in a Chicago Bulls uniform. Guy's liver is shot though. His eyes were golden. Digby Posted May 18, 2020 Share Posted May 18, 2020 I enjoyed The Last Dance. It wasn't revelatory in any way, sure, and the Krause bullying was a little much. But it was a nice reminder of the fun and excitement and yes, even some good basketball in that era. It's also nice for the NBA to get some of that NFL Films cinematic retelling treatment. It obviously helped the documentary that it ended up being dropped into this bizarro vacuum. I don't know that it was interesting enough to hold up viewer interest for 10 weeks, but condensing it into 5 was probably better. And of course the whole desperation for any nice sports content and the desire for nostalgia at this time helped, too. The_Admiral Posted May 19, 2020 Share Posted May 19, 2020 Krause was really good at making trades and complementary free-agent signings, but for someone who prided himself on being Scouty McScoutington, the guy really whiffed on a ton of drafts. He was able to wriggle out of most of those during the Jordan years, but once he cleared the books and couldn't swing key trades without having to give up, say, Ron Artest or Elton Brand, then the magic was sort of gone. Reinsdorf has done a fine job of making himself out to be the benevolent patriarch now that Krause is dead, but we all know Jerry was not lamenting What Could Have Been during those years where 22,000 people off the waiting list were selling out the United Center to go see Elton Brand. But of course, Krause's real undoing was being a physically hideous man who was rude to the media. Consider that Theo Epstein also pretty much told his last coach that he could go undefeated and still be f-cking gone, but no one made a monster out of Theo because he's handsome, pleasant, and well-educated. And while fantasy sports have normalized the general-manager-as-ruthless-utilitarian concept, where all fans now see players as assets and spreadsheet cells to be bartered, leveraged, or disposed of, Krause didn't even come at that from the accepted angle: he wasn't some Ivy League MBA wunderkind who radiates born superiority, he was just a fat slob from Chicago who hung out in obscure college gyms trying to show people up. I know Karl Malone was saying that Sloan wasn’t doing so well, but I didn’t think he’d pass so soon. I knew Jerry was dealing with Parkinson’s in the last few years, but I haven’t heard much else since then. He’d been the only Jazz coach I knew for the first 20 years of my life, and he is absolutely beloved here. The applause he’d get when he’d show up to regular season or summer league games (as much as his recent health would permit) was as loud as if the Jazz had just hit a big shot.
