Claims that a “deal has been reached”, implying that there’s some things that haven’t yet been made public. Possibly some guardrails to protect Chinatown, but we all know that those guardrails will be bypassed nearly immediately. Goes to council now, where it likely wont be voted on until early December. Her “reaching an agreement” just means that it can get sent to council, not that it actually is approved in any binding way. I’m pretty sure she can’t unilaterally go against council for something like this, but she already has done that for other things. And once that is finalized, the ownership of the Sixers will focus on a new stadium for one of the other two pro sports teams that they own: the Washington Commanders. If she's still in the Virginia legislature by then, Louise Lucas will shut down any deal for the Commanders in Northern Virginia. She was the one who said no to the proposed arena deal between Northern Virginia and Monumental Sports and Entertainment (Wizards and Capitals) that forced the Wizards and Caps to go back to DC for major renovations for their current place. They've put down some roots there, a Virginia stadium has been the white whale of the team and the state for years, and if new ownership asks for minimal help in making it happen, they probably could. The_Admiral Posted September 19 Share Posted September 19 That would make the most sense--I think just about every park faces somewhere from northeast to southeast for that reason (not to mention the grandstand staring into the sun). Legend has it that it's oriented that way so that baseball would continue to be played "at the corner of 35th and Shields," but that never made any sense to me, because the park would be at that corner no matter where home plate was. As it is now, plebes can't enter from 35th/Shields anyway; you have to enter from the bleachers or from the annex across 35th. It’s become so petty, but man did they get them. 1. They committed to play in the new place for a minimum of 30 years, so to 2061. It’s built 100% with their own money (debatable with PILOTs) so I’m not sure what happens after that, but that’s good. 2. They had a provision that since they’re not using any public money, if ANY other team gets public money for their stadium/arena, then the city has to match it and write the Sixers a check for that amount. That was thought to be a poison pill, but PLOT TWIST - they dropped it for the Phillies and Eagles, and only included it for the Flyers / Comcast, essentially prohibiting them from getting public funding forever. Not sure how much it matters because everything the Flyers have done has always been private money, but the pettiness to explicitly block them from EVER getting public money is amazing. Now seven years into its existence, the Portland Diamond Project has yet to say anything about how it intends to finance this land deal, a stadium development or acquisition of a team. If Fisher had taken Joe Lacob up on his offer to buy the team, he would have made a profit of more than one billion dollars on his purchase price. He then would have been a sure thing to get an expansion team for Las Vegas, for which he would not have the rushed timeline of getting a stadium built there by 2028. Rather than demonstrating greed, this move of the A's reveals some absurd combination of obstinance and stupidity on Fisher's part. LMU Posted 3 hours ago Share Posted 3 hours ago As much as Fisher is rightfully getting panned, with the decades of failed proposals, the Giants' blocking of the San Jose market, and all of Oakland's bumbling with stadium maintenance/90s Raider groveling/overreliance of Federal grant money to turn Howard Terminal into the city's last hope out of dystopia/general incompetence, I would bet that this would have been the ultimate outcome if Fisher would have been replaced by 90% of similar rich guys.
