MLB 2019 Changes

. I can only hope this inspires the front office to make some uniform changes to the current and stale full time set and adopt a more traditional approach befitting a franchise of this heritage

Agreed!  I can’t remember if I saw it here or on another site but I think the time has past for anything new to happen for next season.  But regardless of where I saw it, it is rumor.  I think there is room for another alternate at the very least.  Tampa Bay has their blue alternate and they also trotted out a Devil Rays jersey several times this year. The Reds could easily keep their Red alt and have a sleeveless they use on a handful of Sundays a year.

It occurred to me the other day that the first season of the current set was the year Joey Votto was called up.  This is the only primary uniform he has worn. He’s a generational player and his career is an era marker of sorts.  I wonder if they’d be better off waiting until he retires before they do another uniform. This could be the uniform of Joey Votto.  He’s really not that far off from retirement.

If not put me down for the 1969 set with regular sized letters and numbers

I have one more add on to my Votto remark.  There are threads here about players in wrong uniforms.  Like Unitas as a Charger.  The second cousin to that could be Player X in a uniform that doesn’t reflect their career.  Prime example is Dan Marino.  Career Dolphin but his last three years were the years that they added navy and thick drop shadows  and made the dolphin cartoonish.  That’s not THE Marino look. The Dolphins put a statue of him in front of Hard Rock stadium wearing the dropshadowed navy laced uniform.  For me that was a major mistake.

I agree with your sentiment.

Unless you know the answer to this one, I wonder if the decision was influenced by a specific image they were basing this statue from? Or maybe Marino wanted this?

I remember when Jerry Rice had his bust in Canton and he was asked specifically which era of his career he wanted. He chose a look from his Raiders days when he was bald and had a goatee.

Heck, even Ed Reed's bust features him in his look post-retirement.

Maybe the Marino thing was his choice?

(And it's a strange choice too since the last time he wore that specific combo, it was his last game and it was a very ugly loss.)

Go A's!

Yeah, that face is definitely Old Dan.

Seems like a deliberate choice; not surprised to hear that the uniform combo comes from his last game.  The statue commemorates his riding off into the sunset, loss be damned.

Is the pose taken from a specific photo?

That reminds me, the Gaylord Perry statue uses the wrong wordmark (the modern one):

It should be this:

They did remember to put a Vaseline can in his back pocket, so I'll let it slide. ;)

They should also change the current wordmark on the jerseys to that as well.

That’s a great point.  I looked around online and I can’t find anything.  The statue is 19 years old so there isn’t a whole lot of material online surrounding the statues unveiling.

Ok, so I quickly went through that and didn't see one MLB branded hat.  Do they have a license with MLB?  I've been Googling Flexfit MLB, Flexfit Yankees, Flexfit Dodgers and not really getting anything.  Are you guys seriously wearing those plain colored hats with no logo?

I think flex fit refers to "traditional" shaped low crown fitted caps that have pre-curved bills and are non-adjustable, IIRC it was a common brand years ago but nowadays new era 39thirty is basically the same idea.

I could be wrong.

New Era offers caps in "flex", which just means a somewhat-stretchable cap in S/M, M/L, and L/XL sizes.

If you have a head larger than 7 1/2, they're not good.  Neither are the Flexfit brand caps.

Yup, my feelings exactly.  Low crown 5950's are the same way for me.

I have to go with stardard 5950s or snapbacks.

I bought my first low-crown 5950 when I was in Cleveland this summer. I really like it!

(I'm a 7 5/8 in high-crown 5950s, but bought a 7 3/4 in the low and it fits really well.)

Same. Going a size up with low crowns helps a lot.

This was once true, but now? FlexFit caps fit WAY better than the New Era "Flex" versions (Pretty sure those are all under the 39Thirty model). I wear a 7 5/8 and the newer versions of FlexFit caps fit wonderfully. The New Era flex caps still fit like trash.

Are you able to find pro team and college team FlexFit caps?  I figured they dont have licensing and might not be available.
