MLB 2019 Changes

The Diamondbacks didn't get it right quite at first, but that 2001-06 set is one of my favorites in baseball. The color scheme was great, and I hate that they ditched it (particularly given they won a World Series in it).

That said, I actually don't mind the current Diamondbacks set, because I kinda like having a modern change-of-pace in a game that desperately needs an increase in identity diversity. Incidentally, though, I don't really like the sets that use teal and feel that they're really dis-jointed from the rest of the identity.

The colours were gorgeous; and the A logo was so beautiful, with the snakeskin pattern.

The only thing wrong with those uniforms was the number font.

The purple, turquoise, and copper didn't contrast all the time, but when it did... it looked great. I think making the purple darker or the turquoise lighter would've fixed it but I don't know. I prefer it to the current color scheme, but it's partly because of how commonly boring red and black is in sports. The random splashes of turquoise they do with the a few of their uniforms feels out of place, but I've stated how much I would really like sedona red, turquoise, and copper/sand together.

It's dumb how many uniforms this team has, and it's even more dumb that I couldn't figure out which ones where the home and away and which ones were alternates.

Red, turquoise, and copper is too much going on at once. They have it right with the red/turquoise/black palette, even though they get everything else wrong.

The original Diamondbacks era set was absolutely fantastic (they made a few slight tweaks throughout the years that were all improvements). The update in 2007 was too dramatic of a departure IMO, but was also very solid in it’s own right. Trying to crash those two into each other headfirst like they did a few years ago was an AWFUL idea. Nothing from this set I better than anything from the first two sets.

Forcing two very distinctively different eras together usually sucks, and the D Backs set is a pretty solid test case for that.

I’d say if they absolutely insisted on doing that, they should’ve gone with brick red, copper, and a hint of teal/turquoise at home. Similar on the road but over a black base because that’s sort of tradition for them at this point. The sets would be starkly different home and road, but it would all still tie together pretty neatly.

I think the main home and road scripts are a smidge better now than the previous set, where you had the letters on a big black blob. But everything going on with the rest of the uniform is disastrous, no way around that.

I remember an image floating around here years ago with the pinstripe actually being a copper colour instead of the purple.  Unless that was a concept image.

@TruColor, any validity to this?

I know you didn't tag me, but per an old website showing the history of diamondback uniforms

" While the jerseys had not been finalized, the articles above mention the design, which again was changed quite a bit before the team took the field.  The original version called for copper pinstripes and the "A" logo on the chest.  It is possible that sample versions were made, although I have never seen a picture of one.  This is possibly what the team was originally intended to look like: "

Copper pinstripes (though those look more like gold than coopper) would be interesting, but I don't think there's enough copper in the logo to make it work.  Maybe if they made the star or the snake pattern copper then it'd look good.

The A-chest home uniform was really good IMO - both in sleeved and vested.  Their road uniforms were never good.  I don't understand why such a departure from their home look.  I think an A-chest road would have been fine, or ARIZONA in something closer to their real wordmark.

The road cap is one of my least favorite ever, as it never looked "major league" to me.  Even by today's dramatically-lowered standards, it still looks bad.

Proportionally, think of Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. If you have the players arms and legs extended so they form a circle centered on the navel with a smaller circle encompassing the knees and elbows: everything beyond the elbow and knee joints are a team color (this extends to the cap); everything inside the inner circle is white, grey, or another single color; and the belt at the navel in the very center is the same color as the socks, sleeves, and cap.

See how that matches up with this classic of Ernie Banks.

Why can’t all ball players dress like this?

The Diamondbacks should only use A-chest jerseys. Diamondbacks is too long and D-Backs looks ridiculous. Could someone mock that up with current colors?

I was thinking this too. I would do that for the home white especially since their cap insignia looks so perfect. It manages to subtly invoke both a Southwest aesthetic and the snake mascot at the same time.

I would prefer that they have a Arizona wordmark on their road jersey of course.

I prefer the standard Phillies home uniform. I like pinstripes and feel that blue (particularly shades of royal and navy) is already becoming much too ubiquitous in MLB. Don't get me wrong, those look pretty sharp, but there's something really distinctive about their normal home whites. I'd keep that one as a Sunday alternate.

I always thought that, but that combo of royal blue and red is not as common. With the red brim and the cream, this look immediately stands out. The red uniforms look too much like the Nats/Reds/Cards/Angels/Rangers. Even with pinstripes. I would put the Reds back in pinstripes, if I had my way.

I wouldn’t mind seeing those Phillies alt uniforms made the home set and relegate the pinstripes to the home alt. I can’t see that ever actually happening, though.
