The new one looks too sharp and lacks the personality from the previous logo. There's a reason why the old one is so beloved. I get why they want to modernize it (the merch sales) but the new logo loses all the fun that makes it charming. Nonetheless, its still a good logo.

I'm starting to see indications around here that people who have already seen the "new" BiG absolutely hate it.

I've shown it to a few people around the Green Bay area and no one has even noticed the difference on first glance, once I show it to them they have all had a similar reaction of not caring, just happy the BiG is back

As much as I understand why people lump Wisconsin's sports fandom into one big monolith, you'd have to imagine Milwaukeeans having the strongest opinions when it comes to the BiG.  In the Green Bay area, the Brewers are something to do until football season starts.

Exceptions to every rule, of course. But I've been living in Green Bay since the early summer. I'm not making a judgment, just an observation.

That's the suspicion. If that is the case, they're blowing a huge chance to galvanize the fans around the new look.

Yeah...I have zero problem with this. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, we got a BiG. I like the straight lines, and I can justify it as a weird serif combining.

 

And if you want to put your betting money on a reason they connected them, I assume it's easier to embroider that in 3D for Nike/New Era. I've had to update a logos based on this concern more than once.  When things get little and sharp, those poofy parts get real tough to fabricate.

I think this begs the question... is raised stitching really necessary?

I've only ever thought it looked good when the monogram was a single color (Yankees, White Sox, Tigers, etc.)

Yes it is, IMO. Every time I see flat stitching, it looks like a cheap gas station hat.

It's true. Raised monograms are a nice touch. It's too clever by half on the batting helmets because they're much more liable to break or fall off than a decal, but for fabric, I'd say it's a must.

Counterpoint: no it isn’t, and most logos look worse in poofy stitching. 

 

New Era has two levels of raised embroidery; the small poof looks fine, the billowy poof looks awful in virtually every application.  All details are blown out, even on simple logos.

Yeah I kind of have to agree that the raised stitching is a case by case thing. It’s basically been standard on New Era caps since the late 90s, and I always just assumed that it would always look better. But I do have a cap or two that has the flat embroidery, and it actually looks really nice. Like was posted above, the raised stitching is a nice touch for single color monograms, but I actually think the BiG logo might look really sharp with the flat embroidery. I have a Mariners throwback cap (the one with the trident) that’s got the flat embroidery, and it’s probably one of the nicest looking caps I own.

I had a similar thought as well: that Nike may be pushing the Brewers' logo changes as a way to leave its mark on a franchise that is re-branding at the same time that Nike is taking over the league-wide contract, the same way that Nike defiled the Seahawks when they took over the NFL contract.

Or, and this may just be a crazy thought, maybe the changes came from the teams and Nike just produce what the teams told them to?

I’m very late to this, but just my $0.02 on the supposed new BiG:

 

It’s fine at best. I don’t think it’s as bad as some feel, as I think the cleaned up lines of the “m” are big improvements and I honestly don’t mind the connected webbing. Everything that needed cleaning in my opinion was addressed. However, it’s by no means a home run either, as I don’t think the ball needed to be centered into the glove’s palm at all and just looks “off” where it’s been placed. The ball was not a problem and should’ve been left as it was. 
 

I also think if they’re going to commit to the BiG again, they may as well go all out back to royal and gold again instead of navy (though that’s more of a rebrand quibble overall than the logo itself). 
 

So all in all, in my eyes the new BiG is nowhere near a disaster, but it’s not as great as it should’ve been, either. It’s fine, and that’s it. I do hope that custom spring training font is indeed part of the package though, because if so, that’s going to score the rebrand as a whole some good points.

You might be the exception, in this case. I grew up in Green Bay and have been there for 54 years. Not full time, but I'm there often enough with family and friends to not have any pre-conceived notions about what Milwaukee means to the rest of the state.

 

Again - just pointing out another option for the population on which you have drawn your conclusion (and on which I have drawn mine). Any of our observations are only as good as the data from which we gather it. None of us are drawing our conclusions from adequately sourced sections of the population.
