I originally planned to go to the Bowie State/Carson-Newman game today, but ended up staying home and watching online. CN won 17-9. A lot of penalties by both teams in this game.

Now that Bowie has been eliminated I'm going to ride with Shepherd throughout the rest of the D2 playoffs. They beat IUP today and will play at Slippery Rock in round 2.

Time to recap the day at the lower levels...

Division II: Two 7 seeds (Lindenwood and Texas A&M-Commerce) and a 6 seed (Carson-Newman) delivered upsets on the opening day of the playoffs.

Division III: If you were at home, it was a good day as the home teams went 12-4 in the first round. Bracket 2 saw the most excitement as three of the four games were decided by single digits, two went into overtime and one, the game between Chapman and Linfield, went into triple overtime with the Panthers eking out a 68-65 victory

South Carolina State got left out the FCS Playoffs despite beating Wofford, the SoCon champ

One regular season upset doesn't change the fact they're the 3rd place team in the MEAC.

Do FCS teams still have to pay to host first rounds games? If so, what would the committee do if all the playoff teams flat out refused to pay?

To piggyback on this point, South Carolina State was one of the first four left out alongside New Hampshire, Southern Illinois and Towson.

Bids for every round are due at the same time

$30K- Opening Round minimum and each subsequent round is an additional $10K minimum bid.

Nicholls bid over $70K to host this season. Bids are unsealed after the 24 teams are selected.

Someone will always pay the minimum of 30 grand for a home game.  In the 20-team bracket era, they were upwards of 32 bid proposals for just 20 spots.

Valdosta State was the first #1 seed eliminated in the D2 playoffs, losing to West Florida.

Meanwhile in D3, division heavyweight Mount Union lost today in the 2nd round. In the next round D3's other top tier programs Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mary Hardin Baylor will play each other in the next round. The odds of a new team winning the Stagg Bowl this year have increased. Although I personally think whoever wins the Whitewater/MHB game will probably win it all.

North Central was not the only road team to get a win in the 2nd Round of D-III play. Joining them are Delaware Valley (Who will take on North Central in the Quarterfinals next weekend) and St. John's (MN).

Over in D-II, West Florida gets another seeded scalp with the win over Valdosta State. They go for a third seeded team as they face Lenoir-Rhyne next weekend. Other upsets include Notre Dame (OH) beating Kutztown and Texas A&M-Commerce rolling past Colorado School of Mines.

In NAIA, the four semifinalists are all undefeated: An all-Iowa battle between Grand View and Morningside is the first game, then you have Lindsay Wilson (KY) heading up to play Marian (IN).

Go UWF Argos!

1994 was the last that Mt Union was eliminated before the semifinal round. And we think that Clemson and Alabama have been successful.

D2 Semifinals are set.

  • #4 West Florida @ #1 Ferris State
  • #3 Minnesota State-Mankato @ #2 Slippery Rock

Surprised that Slippery Rock ended up seeded higher that MN State
