FCMacbeth Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 Bonjour, everyone! It is I, your concept maker FC Macbeth. I thought I share with you a logo concept. You see, I'm trying to design an alternative logo for the Quebec Nordiques. My idea goes like this: The main basis of the logo is combine the elements of both Quebec teams: the Nordiques and the Remparts (a QMJHL team). The letters 'Q' and 'N' are well meshed together in harmony, with a hockey stick thrown in. A fleur-de-lis is feature predominately. So, here are 8 possible logo designs: Variant 1 has a Rempart on top of the logo and a white line through the middle of it, forming an 'N'. The 'Q' part comes in as the hockey stick acts as the tail of the 'Q'. On the center is the white fleur-de-lis on a blue background with a subtle cross-hatch pattern resembling a hockey goal net. Variant 2 is the same as Variant 1 except the stick is pointing downwards instead of to the right side. Variant 3 and 4 also the same except they are display on the blue background with the white outline. Variant 5-8 utilises the unused Nordiques colour scheme of navy, teal and white. So, tell me what you think is the best variant out of the 8. Oh, and C&C recommended!
Whittier S Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 In sports logos, I'll always choose a more vertical orientation over a more horizontal orientation, if for some reason I can't go with a pure square or circle. The reason is that sports logos nowadays are often shrunk to very small proportions, and one that has a lot of width but not much height gets dwarfed by other logos from the same league with squarer proportions. Thus, I prefer the even-numbered logos. That said, 2 and 4 are the same logo, as are 6 and 8. You're just demonstrating how they look on different backgrounds. And I prefer the red/white/blue color scheme as more classically Nordiques.
raz Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 I see the "Q," but I do not see the "N." On color, it has far too many outlines. I think it's working too hard. Needs to be simplified.
Jake3roo Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 So this looks like a great start! My first edit would be to remove the pattern from the inside of the Q. It won't be able to be seen from far away and probably wouldn't even be used in any application other than digital. Also, everything else in the logo is very squared off, and that inside is rounded. I'd also think about making your lines slightly thinner and sleeker, as the logo as a whole is very clunky right now (for lack of a better word) and has too many outlines.
The_Admiral Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 I respect the attempt to get some Quebec City iconography going, but it doesn't work in practice. If the old logo was an Elephant Igloo, this is a profile view of a water faucet. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
Tygers09 Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 I see where you going with this design. I would recommend a oval circle ( like that of the University of Oregon's capital O) with the features in your first design; the line through the middle, the hockey stick representing the tail of the Q and the fleur-de-lis in the middle of the Q. What I would change is having one rempart off the upper left part of the Q, that would form a lower case "n". Not remparts all across the top of the Q like you originally designed. This logo would also be similiar to the New Jersey Devils logo.
FCMacbeth Posted November 25, 2019 Author Posted November 25, 2019 After taking suggestions from a few people, I present to you all a revised version of my created Nordiques logo concept. Here is a side by side comparison: The logo is now losing all of its fat after a huge workout. He's now a thin and healthy logo. The rempart now appears on the right side only so @the admiral doesn't feel the need to make the water faucet comparison. Also you can now make out the 'N' there. The subtle goal net pattern is removed as it is too hard to see far away unless going up close. The edges are now smoothly rounded. The stick is shortened a little bit. And, as usual, here are some variants. Separated into rows. Row 1 uses the classic Nordiques colour scheme (Red, white, powder blue). Row 2 utilises the proposed colour scheme in the pre-relocation era (Navy blue, teal, white) Row 3 uses the colours from the city flag of Quebec City (Royal blue, gold) Here ya go. Tell me what you think!
Whittier S Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 If you want the top to look like an n, you should put the ramparts on the opposite side. That would also give you a nice balance as they would be diagonal from the end of the hockey stick.
BigRed75 Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 I agree with Whittier. Move the ramparts to the left side as a lower-case n has the straight line sticking up on the left-hand side. The idea of the concept, combining the hockey stick from the old logo with La Citadelle, is solid.

vtgco Posted November 26, 2019 Posted November 26, 2019 I really like the idea of having a rampart-themed alternate logo for the Nordiques! Something to really represent la Vieille Capitale. I think the inclusion of the N is a bit of a stretch here... I think just having a Q with ramparts all the way across the top works just fine, especially because the primary logo is already an N. Still the slimmer updated logo looks a lot better than the clunky first version. Also, your blue & yellow version looks cool! If the Nordiques ever come back, they should at least do a city flag alternate jersey, if not full-time.

In fact, I have two alternative versions in my head: An actual city flag, like what you mentioned. A throwback-esque design in tribute of an amateur team called the Quebec Beavers (or Castors in French), utilising the city flag colours of Quebec City. Thank you for you feedback.
