Whatever Atlético Madrid does with an Ottawa CPL club under its ownership and management, I would want to say these five words of cautionary advice to those in charge of the whole Atlético organization ...

Remember Club Deportivo Chivas USA.

While true, there's also NYCFC, owned by Manchester City's parent company City Football Group.  They are doing well despite stadium issues.

I looked at the Fire's schedule today, and this team better be ready for life as a tertiary tenant. Since Soldier Field hosts concerts and international soccer matches during the summer, it looks an awful lot like the Fire just had to take available dates where they could get them.

March: First 3 matches on the road (probably normal, given the cold and snow and whatnot)

May: 3 home matches in 8 days, then 28 days until next home match

July: 3 home matches in 7 days, then 21 days until next home match

August: 3 home matches in 9 days, then 27 days until next home match

Also, out of 11 matches in July and August, only 1 is currently scheduled to be televised. Basically, the Fire aren't going to be around much this summer, and if they aren't surprisingly good or do something out of the gate to spark interest, they're going to be very easy for the city at large to forget about.

I've also found it odd that the plans for the Nashville stadium were in the 27500-30k range. That's pretty big! Most other purpose-built stadia for MLS teams are around 20k give or take, except for Galaxy and Toronto. Seemed like aiming way high, though I like the ambition, I guess.

Would they have been looking to move the Music City Bowl there? That would make sense if the bowl weren't getting big numbers at Nissan Stadium.

City Group seemed to have a thought out plan. This is a bit hurried by Altetico Madrid and the CPL and I wonder how they'll be filling in that roster so quickly. Will they be sending U18/U19 players to complete the roster in the fall? Will they have limits to who they can bring in to the team to keep the league competitive?

Music City averages ~50K per season.

Austin FC President Andy Loughnane was interviewed on SBJ/SBD's "First Look" podcast released this morning.

It begins a the 10:00 mark and covers the rest of the podcast.  In it, Loughnane discussed build the brand and some demographics which they still find as promising as well as sponsorships.  The stadium is discussed, as well as how Austin is 30th in MSA, but just 40th in TV households and how cord cutters are going to impact their distribution.

I agree that Nashville SC's place in MLS is extremely secure this year and that the team's presence in its new league is likely to persist through at least next year.  As I have understood it, Nashville SC's plan was indeed to play at Nissan Stadium for at least its first two MLS seasons while a stadium designed specifically for the club was under construction.  Now, it is more or less a matter of whether or not anyone can and will pay for all of the infrastructure that the new stadium needs in order to thrive before Nashville SC's future becomes truly in doubt.

Well, this is why MLS has been insisting that their owners have plenty of cash.  Your owners might need to just suck it up and write the check.

I wonder if that'll be any different next year, or if the timing of the agreement with Bridgeview left the Fire too late to secure first-choice dates?  I know a lot of the high-profile venues book their acts more than the year in advance the Fire had.

So, interestingly, Atletico Madrid owns a team in Mexico, which got promoted to the top division this year.

Part of their ownership group is Zygi Wilf, owner of the Minnesota Vikings, so not exactly strapped for cash.

Oh, I know.

But this is why MLS is now looking for deep pockets, and why Sacramento was left hanging when they were head and shoulders above all others in literally every other respect.

The league wants and needs owners who can pay their own bills.  As they damn well ought to.

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2020/01/31/nashville-sc-offered-19-m-more-mls-stadium-deal/4623904002/

Fair use excerpt:

Quote

[Nashville SC principal investor/operator John] Ingram, in his letter [to Nashville Mayor John Cooper and to the Nashville Metro Council], said Cooper has made clear the fairground racetrack is important — even if there is no current deal in place to expand the track.

Speedway Motorsports has pitched a $60 million racetrack renovation project to bring NASCAR to the fairgrounds. But the placement of the 10-acre mixed-use development and a parking lot near the racetrack entrance is a problem, according to the group.

The close proximity, Speedway Motorsports says, makes the flow in and out of the track nearly impossible and creates a potential public safety issue.

Cooper hasn't said where he stands on a deal with Speedway Motorsports but his office said it was under review.

Ugh!  Is Nashville's mayor really concerned about the costs of the proposed Nashville SC stadium ... or is he being influenced unduly by a company with a vested interest in a different sport, a firm that happens to own eight tracks that each host at least one annual race in NASCAR's highest-level series?

Yes.

The CPL requires that a minimum of 6 Canadian starters per game and the roster must comprise of 50% +1 of Canadians.

I have/had the same fear and assumed they'd start in the fall season at the earliest but from what I've heard they have a core roster ready to go and that was part of what was being sorted out behind the scenes before they made the announcement. Expect a mix of some former Fury Canadians, players out of the PLSQ and League1 and, Athletico providing some players too.

Oh, that’s a very bad sign for the city. Selling off public assets is such a short-sighted, desperate move.

The interim mayor also tried to privatize parking operations and enforcement, which isn't a bad idea on its face, but a judge struck down the contract in October of last year, weeks after the runoff election. It was for 30 years and $325M over the life of the contract with $34M upfront which would have been put towards their $38M budget shortfall.

The current mayor decided not to put out another bid, continuing the state to keep an eye on them.
