I know Luongo was probably getting paid by Reebok to wear their equipment, but there's no way he got his helmet from Reebok.  This isn't the same as forward or defenseman wearing a Reebok helmet.

Reebok was at least the parent company.  It's not like its Starbucks or Tim Hortons.

Hockey helmets should be the place to feature teams' wordmarks, like the Red Wings do and Devils did. Maybe except the Rangers, who could use an italic-shadowed NY or the primary.

I was thinking old school where all these masks are moulded to the goalie's head, but it seems like the new ones are all one size fits all.  So, Reebok being on Luongo's helmet would be okay in the same way as a skater's helmet, if Luongo's was an off the shelf model.

Luongo masks weren't even made by Reebok or CCM but by Protechsport/Lefevre. Same with pads no matter if he wore Koho's, Reebok's or CCM's all of them were made by Lefevre (now part of True Hockey).

RDS is saying ads on helmets are likely to be approved today for this season.

If advertisements can be limited to helmets, I'd be okay with that comprimise, if ads stay off the jerseys. They can put the ad next to the helmet brand logo and it won't be overbearing.

That would mean recolouring the whole company logo. And taking out the box as well.

No. You just put an white outline around the advertisement. Colors can stay.

Read a little about this.  Seems like there was a partnership between the two companies where Lefevre made the equipment, but Reebok/CCM marketed and distributed them.  So, Reebok/CCM logos showing up on the helmet/pads is technically correct.

I will give Gary Bettman some credit for resisting the temptation to putting ads on the jerseys already, but with the pandemic and the success of the NBA, I feel that it's not if, but when there will be ads on the jerseys.  Even if Bettman doesn't necessarily want them, you have to believe that there will be enough owners who have or will push for them.  Once everyone gets use to helmet ads, BOOM, ads on the jersey.  One of the rumours I remember from before the Reebok edge makeover was that goalies would wear a different coloured jersey like in soccer and have ads on them.

The Sharks probably won't have one, though, if it happens.  Ad patch would weigh them down.

If it's not WaWa, we riot.

That would be one that would get no opposition from me.

Also, just wondering...with the NYR and CALG RRs and the Sens white, is Adidas trying to steer teams away from long, colored forearms? The originals of all 3 had big blocks of color there.

Maybe @andrewharrington would know. He seems quite knowledgeable.

I think the Rangers & Flames both just wanted to bring back their old third jerseys, but this wasn't a throwback program so they were forced to make some sort of changes. With Ottawa the only thing I could think of is that the original white 2D jersey was used for a lot longer than the black. Some fans might still have the old white jersey, so this update gives a bit more incentive to buy the new one.

The Kraken away jersey has blue forearms, so it doesn't seem like something Adidas has an issue with.

I hate this. Pure greed. I also hate anyone who supports this. This league is slowly turning into a joke like the NBA, they should have never followed their example. Those of you who are okay with ads on helmets, enjoy those Viagra and McDonalds ads on your favorite team's jersey in 2 years

Would you rather the league suffer even worse losses just because you don't like the idea of a barely-noticeable advertisement on a small part of the overall uniform? I get we're a uniform discussion board, but at the end of the day economics always trump aesthetics.

The NHL needs money to keep itself afloat, and it's not going to pass up a nice little bonus of cash just because some people on an internet forum think it'd be bad to have a small ad on the helmets. Besides, I doubt they'd need ads all over the jerseys considering that, if this goes through, they already have ads on the players' helmets, ice, boards, glass and broadcast graphics in addition to commercial breaks. The league has plenty of other pre-existing advertising means besides slapping ads all over a jersey.

The NBA does it because the NBA doesn't really care about the uniforms as much; it's why there's so many disposable alternates in that league.

How exactly would the NHL suffer if they didn't put ads on the helmets? Would they have to close their doors? Does the salary cap go down? Are the players losing money? Or are the billionaire and multi millionaire owners losing out on percentages on their spreadsheets?

The NHL and NBA are multi-billion dollar businesses. AFirestorm is 110% spot on. It IS pure greed. The NHL just put ads on the ice behind the nets. In the meantime, many of these mega corporations are overworking and underpaying their employees but they have no problem spending millions of dollars on turning any space in sports into billboards.

They don't need ads on players, you said it yourself, the ice and the boards and anywhere you look around the rink are already littered with ugly ads. This is greed, pure and simple. The owners are billionaires, they don't need to soil the uniforms with ugly ads. Move the teams out of non hockey markets where the stands are always half empty if you're worried about revenue loss

It's weird how people willfully agree to work to be underpaid when there are so many jobs out there that are more than happy to overpay them.

I can't really fault companies for having advertising budgets and spending money in venues that have quite a bit of visibility.

I would've found those easy, personally; a old Leafs jersey in St. Pats green and just inverting the home jersey for Detroit and putting the old wheel logo on the front, maybe with the diamond captaincy patch.

We found them easy, too. Not everyone sees it the same way, unfortunately. 🙂
