i keep seeing a lot of hate for the Titans logo, but no one has said why besides “its bad”. so, why is the Titans logo bad?

"Its a flaming thumbtack!!!"

I LOVE the Titans logo. It's a bit wonky and kinda cheesy, but that's the point. There are so many worse logos out there than the Titans logo.

I thought blue flames were cool in 8th grade, when we started using Bunsen burners.

Dredging up an old post of mine where I think I explained pretty well why the Titans' look worked once but not now:

For one thing, they're of a certain time with the two-tone blue, tapered stripes, and I guess what you could call for lack of a better term, vaguely science-fictiony numerals that look very turn-of-the-millennium to me. (The Patriots, same.) That could have been fine enough, but they're making a mistake a lot of teams make with identities, which is to tinker themselves to death while still trying to hold onto the general idea. (The L.A. Kings, same.) It feels like they've tried to redesign without actually redesigning.

I've brought it up before, but the Titans seemed to do well with their branding because as they got to the Super Bowl, they did it with fresh new uniforms and logos that didn't explicitly tie them down to Nashville (didn't even have it in their name): they just felt like sort of a free-floating entity that anyone could get on board with, or at least agree not to hate. I grew up in Bears/Packers country and saw a ton of Titans gear out there circa 2000 because they looked new and interesting and a hot AFC Central team wasn't much of a concern to fans of struggling NFC Central teams. Had the Houston Oilers enjoyed a renaissance under Steve McNair (one of my favorites growing up, he was Roethlisberger before Roethlisberger in terms of getting his ass kicked all day but never giving up; let us not plumb the analogy any deeper than that), I don't think you would have seen Midwesterners wearing oil derricks on their T-shirts, even though that whole identity was objectively superior.

So now that the Titans are cemented and their stuff looks old, maybe they need some design that's more obviously Nashville. I know the logo is based on the Tennessee flag, but maybe there's more they can do without being obvious and lame about it.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

What was wrong with this set?

For me, the biggest flaw is those huge, overly-fussy sleeve stripes that were never going to translate to modern templates. It's the same issue I have with the Steelers' uniforms. Plus, they didn't even match back then - the sleeve stripes on the brown jerseys had extra outlines that weren't on the other jerseys' stripes. On top of that, they had two sets of white pants with different striping patterns.

IMO, the closest the Browns have come to getting it right was just before they moved to Baltimore, when they dramatically reduced the sleeve stripes:

Even then, there were still issues: the sleeve stripes on the white jerseys didn't match the pants stripes or the sleeve stripes on the brown jerseys. They also didn't have a set of orange or brown pants to complete the look. Still, it's probably the best look they've ever worn.

Those stripes weren't reduced by the team... That was just individual players customizing their jerseys but cutting them shorter.

1 - I think you mean Oilers up there that I bolded.

I did, thanks.  And agree to disagree.  I also liked the rounded numbers, but aside from the numbers I can’t think of any uniform that looks half as good as the best Titans combos.

Slapping this unique and timeless number font on the current Titans uniforms would take them pretty close to not-needing-an-upgrade territory for me.

Am I only one who dislikes this font? It reminds me of when I open a jersey PSD template and I don't have the font they used installed, so it defaults to Times New Roman. Feels way too skinny & non-athletic

The picture itself I love, though - I believe this was snapped after the fake punt TD run in the 09 HOF game vs. Buffalo!

i dont dislike the font but i dislike it for the Oilers. this is where id like to see more unity/consistencey in elements rather than contrast. all the stripes and the logo is made of straight lines so i think a traditional block font would be better here. this font would work great with the Titans design though

That’s a good way to sum it up. Their identity seems a bit generic and non commital to me. How do flames represent Titans? What kind of Titans are you? I think there a better descriptors they can use to make sure the identity is communicating in the best way.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

All this talk about the Browns helmets had me realize something; no team in the NFL has numbers on the helmets . The Browns could totally  do that so it would be a cross of no logo and logo.

Also unpopular opinion is unpopular, but i would put the Browns in brown lids so they dont look like their in state rivals.

dont wuote me on the exact mythologoy, but i believe Helios (titan) gave fire to mortals. or something along those lines. also, Helios (titan of fire?)is sometimes referred to simply as “titan”. again, im writing this without referencing wikipedia so that might not be 100%. but fire makes sense somehow there. also also - Nashville is the “athens of the south” so i always liked they played off Greek mythology rather than Tennessee history

I always thought it was ironic that teams named Browns seem to find their way to Baltimore. St Louis Browns became the Baltimore Orioles.

While it isn't ironic, it is a strange coincidence. Also, consider that the Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis, the home of the baseball Cardinals; and the Cincinnati Royals moved to Kansas City, home to baseball's Royals. The football Cardinals saw no need to change their nickname; while basketball's Royals became the Kings.

Anyway, the transplanted Browns were introduced at their first press conference after the move as the Baltimore Browns; and it should have stayed that way. This isn't a case like the Dodgers, Lakers, Jazz, Oilers, Senators, North Stars, or Rockies, where the nickname makes no sense in the new city. The nickname "Browns" is from the team's history, and so should follow the team to any new home.

The Browns had orange helmets first.

I say that as a Bengals fan, no less.
