Neo's 40 Team Alternate Universe NHL (Charlotte Checkers)

After toying with the idea of a 40 team fictional hockey league, I've decided instead on doing my own 40 team NHL in an alternate universe.

The 1992-93 NHL alignment served as the starting point. As more teams are added, some existing teams will switch divisions if necessary.

Smythe:

Calgary Flames (Flames 2.0)

Edmonton Oilers

Los Angeles Kings

San Diego Gulls (1993-94)

San Jose Sharks

Vancouver Canucks

Colorado Cougars (1993-94)

Arizona Coyotes (1996-97)

Norris:

Chicago Blackhawks (Hawks 2.0)

Detroit Red Wings

Houston Aeros (1993-94)

Minnesota North Stars

St. Louis Blues

Toronto Maple Leafs

Winnipeg Jets
Dallas Texans (1997-98)

Adams:
Boston Bruins

Buffalo Sabres

Cleveland Barons (1993-94)

Hartford Whalers

Montreal Canadiens

Ottawa Senators

Quebec Nordiques

Patrick:
New Jersey Devils

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers

Pittsburgh Penguins

Tampa Bay Lightning

Washington Capitals

Mighty Ducks of Orlando (1996-97)

Charlotte Checkers (1997-98)

From there, teams will be added (or moved if need be). For the 16 expansion/relocation slots, here's what I'm thinking of.

Select four for the Smythe, four for the Norris and so on. You can shuffle teams to other divisions if necessary.

  • Anaheim
  • Atlanta
  • Baltimore
  • Charlotte
  • Cincinnati
  • Cleveland
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Hamilton
  • Hampton Roads
  • Houston
  • Indianapolis
  • Kansas City
  • Las Vegas
  • Miami
  • Milwaukee
  • Nashville
  • New Orleans
  • Oklahoma City
  • Orlando
  • Phoenix
  • Portland
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Diego
  • Saskatoon
  • Seattle

Now on to the concepts, we start with the Minnesota North Stars.

The shoulder patch, of course, is a re-purposed version of the Wild's State of Hockey logo with different colors.

One thing you might want to adjust is the placement of the numbers on the sleeves. As you have them placed now, they'd be off-center. You should only be able to see half of the number on each sleeve.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)
