Paul Lukas, founder of the website “Uni-Watch” and former ESPN writer, is credited for coining the term. Teams with no prior history of having black in their color scheme either adding black to their color scheme or overhauling their identify altogether with a strong emphasis on black. Many expansion teams of the 1990s were likely to add feature black in their identities. But when did the fascination with black began? It depends on the league. I’ll only focus on the four major sports (NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA). If anyone wants to mention minor league teams, college teams (football and basketball), the CFL, and soccer teams (MLS, Premiere League, etc) down the line, that’s fine. I'll start with the NHL NHL I’ll pinpoint to the Los Angeles Kings’ 1988 rebrand (switching from Laker colors to Raider colors), combined with trading for Wayne Gretzky, as the beginning of the increase of the color black in NHL (and in all of sports). As a result, the Kings would soon become one of the more popular teams in the NHL and play a key role in the NHL’s expansion into other California cities and in the Southern USA (much to the chargin to some Canadian/Northern US traditionalists). Unlike most teams that changed to black from the late 80s onward, the Kings are one of the few teams that actually look good in black. Pre-1990s Of the original 6 teams, only the Boston Bruins wore black as a major color with yellow (athletic gold) as the secondary color. The Chicago Blackhawks have black as a secondary color as red is their primary color. When the NHL expanded in 1968, the Philadelphia Flyers introduced an orange/black color scheme with orange as the primary color. For example, the lineup of NHL team uniforms during the 1975/1976 season. 1976/77 – California Golden Seals relocated to Cleveland to become the Barons. The franchise changed their color scheme from tealish-green/yellow to dark red/black. 1978/79 – The Barons folded and merged with the Minnesota North Stars. - The Vancouver Canucks have new uniforms and changed their color scheme from blue/green to black/yellow/orange. 1979/80 - Inspired by then-recent champion success of the other Pittsburgh teams (Steelers and Pirates), The Pittsburgh Penguins changed their uniforms during the middle of the season. The color scheme changed from navy blue/light blue to black/yellow. The Bruins objected to the Penguins’ color scheme, but the NHL allowed the Penguins to change their colors. 1980/81 - The Penguins’ first full season in their new color scheme. 1981/82 - The Minnesota North Stars add black as a 3rd color to their green/yellow color scheme 1985/86 - The Canucks changed their uniforms (toned down from the ugly “V” uniforms) but retain their color scheme. The uniforms would be further toned down exchanging yellow jerseys for white in 1989. 1988/89 - The Los Angeles Kings changed their logo and uniforms from “Laker” (purple and yellow) colors to “Raider” colors (black and silver). - The North Stars change the color of their shorts from green to black. The Canucks further tweaked their uniforms as they switched their light colored jersey from yellow to white while black was retained as the dark colored jersey. 1991/92 - The San Jose Sharks become the NHL’s newest team and featured a teal/black/silver color scheme with teal as the primary color. - The North Stars get new uniforms and changed their dark color jersey from green to black. - The Blackhawks added a black throwback jersey which would only be worn during this season. 1992/93 - The New Jersey Devils changed their color scheme from red/green to red/black. Red was retained as the dark colored jersey. - The NHL introduced two new teams: the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning, both of which wore black as their dark colored jersey. - The Senators had a black/red color scheme (with a hint of gold) while the Lightning had a black/blue/silver color scheme - Despite their Stanley Cup success prior to the season, the Penguins get new uniforms (Changing from the Skating Penguin logo to the “Robo-Penguin” logo) but retain their color scheme. 1993/94 - The North Stars relocated from Minnesota to Dallas (dropping the “North” part of their name) but retained their uniforms and color scheme. 1994/95 - The Calgary Flames have new uniforms and added black to their color scheme. The color of their shorts changed from red to black 1995/96 - The Quebec Nordiques relocated to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche. The color scheme changed from light blue/red to burgundy/steel blue/black. Although black is the 3rd color the shorts the team wears are black instead of burgundy or blue. - The Washington Capitals have new uniforms and changed their color scheme from red/royal blue to slate blue/black/gold. The color of the team’s new shorts are black. 1996/97 - The original Winnipeg Jets relocated to Phoenix to become the Coyotes. The franchise’s color scheme changed from royal blue/red to black/dark red/green/sand with black as the primary color for the dark colored jersey. - The Buffalo Sabres have new uniforms and changed their color scheme from royal blue/yellow to black/red/silver with black as the primary color. - The Blackhawks add a black 3rd jersey. - The Penguins add a black 3rd jersey that featured the “Robo-Penguin” logo 1997/98 - The Hartford Whalers relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and rebranded as the Carolina Hurricanes. The color scheme changed from green/navy blue/silver to red/black/silver with red as the dark color jersey. - The Canucks have new uniforms, dropping the black/yellow/red-orange color scheme in favor of navy/slate blue/silver/maroon, which would last throughout the 2006/07 season before the team returned to their original blue/green color scheme. - The Flyers added a black 3rd jersey. - The Capitals added a black 3rd jersey. - The Penguins make their 3rd jersey (The “Robo-Penguin” one) as their primary dark color jersey, replacing the “PITTSBURGH” jersey. - The Anaheim Ducks (then the Mighty Ducks) change the color of their pants from purple to black. 1998/99 - The Kings have new uniforms and added purple to their color scheme. Black remains the dark color jersey’s primary color. - The Flames add a black 3rd color 1999/2000 - The Senators make their red 3rd jersey (introduced in the 1997/98 season) their primary dark color jersey and dropping the black jersey. - the Stars dropped their black uniforms and made their green “star-shaped” 3rd jersey (introduced in the 1997/98 season) as the new primary dark color jersey. - The Ducks' pants color reverted back to purple. Ten teams (Flames, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Avalanche, Stars, Devils, Senators, Flyers, Sharks, and Capitals) featured black either as a 2nd or 3rd color with four of the teams (Flames, Blackhawks, Flyers, and Capitals) wearing an alternate black jersey. 2000-01 - The Senators introduced a new black alternate uniform as a 3rd jersey. - The Capitals make their black 3rd jersey the new primary dark color jersey and the slate blue jersey would be dropped. 2001/02 - The Flames make their black 3rd jersey the primary dark color jersey and dropped the red jersey. - The Flyers make their black 3rd jersey the primary dark color jersey and dropped the orange jersey. - The Sharks added a black 3rd jersey - The Penguins added a black 3rd jersey which featured the “Skating Penguin” logo but with vegas gold instead of athletic gold (yellow), which the team would eventually adopt fully. 2002/03 - The Penguins have new uniforms, changing their color scheme from black/yellow to black/vegas gold. The Skating Penguin logo fully returns and replaces the Robo-Penguin. 2003/04 - The Ducks add a black 3rd jersey. - The Stars added a black 3rd jersey, the much-hated “Mooterus” jersey. - The Flames demoted their black jersey as a 3rd jersey and introduced a new red jersey which would be their primary dark color jersey. - The Coyotes have new uniforms and dropped black from their new color scheme in favor of a dark shade of red. - The NHL now makes the dark color jerseys the home jersey and the white jerseys the road jerseys. 2004/05 NO SEASON DUE TO STRIKE 2005/06 No major changes regarding the color black 2006/07 - The Sabres have new uniforms which changed the color scheme from black/red/silver to navy blue/yellow. However, the new logo (nicknamed the “Buffaslug”) would be much maligned by many fans and the classic logo (before the black/red rebrand from 1996) would be reintroduced as a 3rd jersey and ultimately the primary jersey. - The Flames drop the black jersey but the color remains a secondary color. - The Bruins added a black 3rd jersey, which replaced the yellow "Winnie the Pooh" jerseys. 2007/08 - The Ducks have new uniforms and a new color scheme, dropping purple (eggplant)/green (Jade)/black/silver for black/bronze/orange color scheme - The Reebok Edge uniforms debut this season. 3rd jersey uniforms are dropped for this season. As a result, the Senators no longer wear a black jersey. - The Lightnings' new uniforms have more emphasis on black than their previous set, which featured more blue. - The Stars have new uniforms. The black jerseys have noticeably less green than the white jersey - The Capitals have new uniforms which exchange the black/slate blue/gold color scheme in favor of a red/navy blue color scheme 2008/09 - 3rd jerseys are reintroduced - The Bruins added a black 3rd jersey They would also introduce black socks, which would ultimately replace the yellow (gold) socks the team had been known for. - The Blackhawks black 3rd jersey returns - The Kings added a black 3rd jersey with silver instead of purple, likely as a nod to the Wayne Gretzky-era uniforms. - The Senators added a black 3rd jersey that says "SENS" - The Sharks added a black 3rd jersey - The Hurricanes added a black 3rd jersey. The shorts worn with the jersey are also black as the team normally wore red shorts. - The Coyotes added a black 3rd jersey 2009/10 - The Blackhawks replaced their black 3rd Jersey with a retro-inspired black jersey, which had been worn at the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field against the Red Wings in the 2008/09 season. - The Flyers would make their orange throwbacks (Based on their 70s look) their new primary dark color jersey while demoting the black jerseys as an alternate jersey. The blue 3rd jersey, which had been worn since the 2008/09 season, would be retained. - The Blackhawks drop their black 3rd jersey - The Kings would make the black 3rd jersey (with silver instead of purple) the primary dark color jersey while demoting the previous primary black jersey (with purple) as an alternate jersey. - The Islanders added a much-hated black 3rd jersey - The Senators added a retro-inspired black 3rd jersey, which replaced the previous black 3rd jersey. 2012/13 -No major changes regarding black 2013/14 - The Kings eliminate the black 3rd jersey that featured purple. They also introduce new white uniforms that better match the black/silver dark color jersey. 2014/15 - The Lightning added a black 3rd jersey with “BOLTS”, replacing the blue 3rd jersey. - The now-renamed Arizona Coyotes drop their black 3rd jersey. As a result, black is mostly eliminated from their color scheme. - The Ducks have new uniforms but the color scheme of black/orange/bronze remains unchanged. - The Stars have new uniforms. The color scheme changed from black/gold/green to green/black with a hit of silver. - The Penguins added a black throwback based on what the team wore in the 1980s and early 90s (the Mario Lemieux era), which replaced the 70s Navy Blue throwbacks the team had worn prior. The black/yellow (gold) color scheme would be so popular that they would ultimately replace the black/vegas gold color scheme. - the Islanders replaced the black 3rd jersey with another blue jersey. 2015/16 - The Islanders added a black 3rd jersey which lacked their primary colors (dark blue and orange) as a likely nod to their NBA roommates, The Brooklyn Nets (which featured a simple black/white color scheme) - The Coyotes have new uniforms which featured more black than the previous uniforms but still retained dark red as the primary color 2016/17 - The Penguins would make the throwback look permanent, dropping Vegas gold for athletic gold (yellow). 2017/18 - 3rd jerseys are dropped this season. As a result, The Hurricanes, Islanders, Senators, and Sharks don’t wear a black jersey. - The (Las) Vegas Golden Knights are introduced as the NHL’s newest team. They feature a dark gray/gold/black/red color scheme. Although gray is the team’s primary color, the color of their shorts is black. 2018/19 - 3rd jerseys return again - The Coyotes added a throwback based on what team wore during the first year in Phoenix - The Hurricanes added a black 3rd jersey. More black is added to their primary red jersey, which previously featured less black. - The Flyers added a black 3rd jersey, which was previously worn at the 2017 Stadium Series against the Penguins. - The Lightning added a black 3rd jersey which lacked blue and instead has gray (silver) gradients. - the Sharks added a black 3rd jersey 2019/20 - The Bruins added a black 3rd jersey, which is based on what the team wore in the 1940s. As of 2020, 4 teams (Ducks, Bruins, Kings, and Penguins) wear black as a primary dark color jersey with the Bruins being the only one to wear a black 3rd jersey. 4 teams (Coyotes, Flyers, Sharks, and Lightning) feature a black 3rd jersey. 7 teams (Flames, Blackhawks, Avalanche, Stars, Devils, Senators, and Golden Knights) feature black in their color scheme but don’t wear a black jersey. Ark Posted January 12, 2020 Share Posted January 12, 2020 A lot of these don't qualify as BFBS in my opinion. The Penguins went to black and gold because the Steelers, Pirates, and Pittsburgh's city flag are black and gold. Some of these teams, such as the Minnesota North Stars and the Colorado Avalanche, look better with black than they did or would without it. And I don't see how an expansion team or a team with a new identity using black is an example of BFBS. BFBS is adding black to your identity for no good reason, particularly if it doesn't look good. Perfect examples of this are the Cincinnati Reds and 2004-2011 Toronto Blue Jays. A team like the Anaheim Ducks could qualify as BFBS, but only because their previous identity was so much better than their current one. The fact that they changed identities is not necessarily an example of BFBS because they changed identities to disassociate themselves with Disney. I am trying to make a point that black wasn't as common in sports team colors as it is now as was the case of Penguins changing their colors (I never knew they wore navy blue/light blue until they started wearing throwbacks to that era) I clearly state the Kings 1988 rebrand (as well as the White Sox 1991 rebrand which I will get to when I discuss baseball) as the beginning of black being more popular in sports from expansion teams to existing teams adding the color black. Maybe I should rename the thread the history of the color black in sports logo/identities and how it unintentionally led to the black for blacks sake phase for some teams. Teams like the Bruins and Penguins should always be in black with a few others like the Blackhawks and Flyers using the color as a secondary color. Flames should only use black as an accent color and increase the amount of gold (yellow). I do agree that the Ducks looked better in their original colors. Maybe combine them with orange? Expansion/Relocated teams are tricky to deal with though black does work for some teams like the Sharks. I would definitely put the Islanders 3rd jerseys from 2011-14 and 2015-17 and the Stars 2007-2013 period as BFBS category (Stars always looked better with green as the primary color and black as the secondary color). Pre-1990s When the 1960s began, only one NFL team wore black (the Pittsburgh Steelers). In the upstart AFL, only the Oakland Raiders had black in their color scheme (originally they had gold but would switch to the famed silver and black scheme two seasons later). In 1964, the then-St. Louis Cardinals added black as an accent color to their away white uniforms and would wear the pants with their red jerseys (which lacked black accents) the following season. By the end of the 60s, two more teams, the Atlanta Falcons (joined in 1966) and New Orleans Saints (joined in 1967) would be featured wearing black jerseys. In the AFL, the Cincinnati Bengals (joined in 1968) introduced a black/orange color scheme. None of these qualify for BFBS. 1990 The Atlanta Falcons, which had been a red team w/black accents throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, had new uniforms which were black with silver and red accents. Their head coach at the time, Jerry Glanville, was a big fan of the color black. Nonetheless, this does NOT qualify as BFBS as the Falcons had worn black uniforms in the past. - The New York Jets added black as an accent color and does not count as BFBS. This look would last through the 1997 season. 1995 The NFL added two new teams: The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars, both of which featured black in their respective color schemes. The Panthers’ primary color jersey is black with light blue and silver as secondary colors. The Jaguars, however, used black as a secondary color and used teal as a the primary color of their jerseys. Gold was also used as a 3rd color. 1996 - Art Modell relocated the Cleveland Browns (which would return as an expansion team in 1999) to Baltimore (which lost the Colts to Indianapolis over a decade earlier) and renamed the team the Ravens. The Ravens primary jersey color is purple with black (and a hint of gold) used as a secondary color. - The Philadelphia Eagles changed their color scheme from kelly green/silver to midnight green/black/charcoal gray. Black was only used as an accent color and a black alternate jersey wouldn’t show up until years later as the NFL didn’t have alternate uniforms back then. It should be noted that the Eagles had been using black as an accent color as early as 1985. - The San Francisco 49ers had new uniforms and tweaked their shade of red and gold. Black is added as an 3rd accent color only. Look would last through the 2008 season. 1997 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers changed from orange “Creamisle” uniforms to a red/pewter color scheme with black and orange used as accent colors. Does NOT qualify as BFBS as black is only used as an accent color and as a sock color and nothing more. 2002 - The NFL starts letting teams wear 3rd jerseys - The Jaguars added a black monochrome uniform (black jersey & pants) - The Lions have new uniforms and added black as an accent color. 2003 - The Falcons had new uniforms. The primary home jersey is red and the 3rd jersey is black. They don’t qualify for BFBS. - The Eagles add a black alternate jersey (which was worn with either white pants or green pants) 2004 - The Bengals have new uniforms but the color scheme remains the same and they don’t qualify for BFBS. - the numbers on the Jaguars road white uniforms changed from teal to black - The Ravens introduce an all-black monochrome uniform. 2005 - The Lions add a black 3rd jersey. 2008 - the Ravens start to wear black pants with the white road jersey for some games, which they still do today. - The Lions replace the black 3rd jersey with a blue 1950s throwback jersey. Black would still be used as an accent color. 2009 - The Falcons replace their black 3rd jersey with 1960s throwbacks - The Jaguars have new uniforms. Although they wear teal home jerseys, the away whites have more emphasis on black. 2010 - The Cardinals add a black 3rd jersey 2012 - The Panthers updated their logo but the logos/colors/uniforms remained mostly the same. - The Jaguars add a black jersey as the new primary home uniform and demotes the teal jersey to alternate status. 2013 - The Falcons drop the throwbacks due to the one-helmet policy - The Jaguars have new uniforms with black as the primary color and teal and gold as secondary colors. The helmet changed from all black to ½ black and ½ gold. - The Vikings have new uniforms and their helmet facemasks are black despite not having the color anywhere else on their uniforms. 2014 - the Buccaneers rebrand uses significantly less black accents than the previous set. They also now wear red socks or pewter socks. Doesn’t qualify as BFBS. 2015 - In one of the worse cases of BFBS, the 49ers introduce an all black uniform with red numbers/stripes and no gold or white anywhere on the uniform. This made the numbers/name hard to read from afar. 2016 - The Falcons introduce a 3rd jersey which is a cross between their 1960s look and their 1990s look. Does NOT qualify as BFBS 2017 - The Cardinals “Color Rush” black alternate uniform is introduced. The different between this jersey and the other black jersey is this jersey has red numbers/names instead of white. - The Lions eliminate black altogether from their color scheme with their new uniforms (black was used as an accent color in their 2009 rebrand) 2018 - The Jaguars have new uniforms but retain their color scheme of black/teal/gold although gold is not used as much. 2019 - the Jets have new uniforms, which include an all-black monochrome uniform. Again, the NFL didn’t have an ever-growing list of teams adding black like the NHL and MLB did. However, the NFL did have a “Navy For Navy’s Sake” period in the late 90s and early 2000s with teams like the Broncos, Titans (formerly Oilers), Rams, Patriots, Bills, and Seahawks all darkening their shade of blue or changing their shade from a previously brighter shade. (the Chargers and Cowboys did it a decade earlier, but navy blue wasn’t as common on NFL jerseys back then. Royal Blue was very common and the Bears were the only team with a navy blue jersey prior to 1981) The uniforms I would include as BFBS in the NFL include the Lions mid-2000s 3rd jersey during the ill-fated Matt Millen era, the Eagles black alternates (black only works as an accent for them), the Cardinals black alternates and Color Rush, the current Jets all-black monochromes, and definitely the 49ers all-black monochrome set (easily one of the worst uniforms of all-time). The Chicago White Sox had a black/red color scheme throughout much of the 1950s and 1960s before going through an endless string of new uniforms/color schemes/logos that would last though 1990. When I was younger, I always though that navy/midnight blue teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Angels, Indians, Braves and Astros wore black instead of navy (Strangely, I though the Twins wore purple instead of navy. Maybe there was some purple haze inside the Metrodome but I digress). To be crystal clear, the Orioles, Giants, and Pirates don’t qualify for BFBS. 1990/1991 - The White Sox were in the last season at the original Comiskey Park in 1990. They had a standard navy blue/red color scheme. During the middle of the season, the team introduced new uniforms that they would be wearing when they opened up New Comiskey Park/US Cellular/Guaranteed Rate Field for the 1991 season. They were based on the 1950s/1960s look but with a black/silver color scheme. The uniforms were so well-received that the White Sox wore them for the final weeks of the 1990 season. The new road uniforms were also worn at the end of that season. In 1991, the White Sox moved to their new park and also introduced a black alternate jersey. Unlike most teams that later added black in the late 90s onward, the White Sox look sharp in black/silver and considering their pre-1990 uniform history, they have settled on this look (with a few tweaks here and there) and don't qualify for BFBS. 1993 - MLB introduced two new teams: the Colorado Rockies and Florida (now Miami) Marlins, both of which featured black in their respective color schemes. The Rockies featured a black/purple color scheme while the Marlins had a teal/black/silver color scheme. - The Rockies wore a black alternate jersey for some home games but were dropped the following season. 1996 The Marlins begin to slowly embrace black over teal, scrapping the teal caps. 1998 MLB introduced two new teams: Tampa Bay (then-Devil) Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks, both of which featured black in their color schemes. - The Rays color scheme is black/purple/rainbow gradient. The team also wore a black alternate jersey - The Diamondbacks color scheme was purple/turquoise/black/copper. While the home whites lacked black accents, the road grays were worn with black caps. The team also had a black alternate jersey, which was only worn during road games. - In one of the most notable moments of BFBS, The New York Mets added black to their color scheme. They wore black caps with blue bill with both their home whites and road grays, both which now featured black drop shadows. A black 3rd jersey was also introduced. They seemed to go back and forth wearing red undershirts and black undershirts with their home whites. The road grays were always worn with black undershirts and caps. - The Marlins work a black jersey during the infamous “Turn Ahead the Clock” promotion. - The Mets wore a black “Mercury Mets” jersey during the infamous “Turn Ahead the Clock” promotion, which lacked the teams traditional colors of royal blue and orange. The added a black skyline version of their long-time primary logo which better reflects the team’s growing use of the color. 2000 - The Houston Astros had new uniforms and a new color scheme, replacing navy blue/metallic gold with black/brick red/sand. Black was the dominate color and the team also featured two black 3rd jerseys. “ASTROS” worn at home games and “HOUSTON” worn at road games. - The Oakland Athletics introduced a black 3rd jersey which featured hunter green numbers/script with white trim and lacked gold (yellow). They were only worn in the 2000 season and worn for both home and road games. - The Mets added another black 3rd jersey with “NEW YORK” which was worn a road games. 2001 - The Rays have new uniform and new colors (hunter green/black/blue). Black was only used as an accent color and cap color. Black caps were worn with the road grays but switched to green in 2005. Black caps were also worn with the sleeveless alternate uniform. - The Texas Rangers sometimes wore a blue cap w/black bill with their blue alternate jersey. - The Diamondbacks tweaked their uniforms. Their home whites are purple/turquoise and lacked the black and copper accents. Their road grays, on the other hand, had black/purple/copper and almost lacked the turquoise accents. The black alternate jerseys were also tweaks. 2002 - The Kansas City Royals had new uniforms and added black to their color scheme. While black was used only as accent on the home whites, black is more prominent in the road grays as the team wore black caps, socks, and undershirts. The royal blue alternate uniforms lacked black accents. - The Astros scrapped their black 3rd jerseys. Black would still be used as an accent color and on the caps. 2003 - The Royals added a black alternate uniform, which was only worn on road games. - The Marlins further de-emphasized teal in their latest uniform tweaks. The team also added a black alternate jersey. 2004 - The Toronto Blue Jays completely overhauled their uniforms, replacing the classic royal blue/red color scheme in favor of black/steel blue/graphite gray color scheme. Any time a team adds black to its color scheme to sell more merchandise, that’s BFBS. In 1971, the team changed to “Laker” colors (purple/yellow) By the time of the NBA/ABA merger in 1976, the Nuggets franchise sported a more familiar blue/gold (yellow) color scheme. In 1970, the now-defunct Anaheim Amigos had the same color scheme as the Denver franchise. The color scheme changed to light blue/red when they moved to Los Angeles to become the stars. In 1970. The now-defunct Miami Floridians had a black/orange/magenta color scheme in 1970. The team folded in 1972 but the Miami Heat have worn their uniforms as ABA throwbacks from time to time. In 1974/74, the now-defunct Virginia Squires had a black/orange/red color scheme but changed their colors to blue/orange in what would be their final season. The Spurs don’t qualify as BFBS. NBA (pre-1988 expansion boom) In 1966, the Chicago Bulls debuted with a red/black color scheme, which remains unchanged to this day and DON’T qualify as BFBS. In 1971, the Buffalo Braves (now known as the Los Angeles Clippers) had an orange/black color scheme. In the 1973/74 season, the team changed uniforms and changed to a Columbia Blue/White scheme with a black accent (maybe it was navy blue instead?). In 1978/79, the franchise relocated to San Diego to become the Clippers and black is replaced with brunt orange as the secondary color. In the 1977/78 season, the Portland Trail Blazers wear a black jersey for the first time as they had new uniforms. Previously, the team had always worn red jerseys on the road with a black as a secondary color since debuting in the 1970/71 season. Except for the 1979/80 to 1984/85 seasons when they went back to red jerseys, the Blazers have worn black jerseys on the road and do NOT qualify for BFBS. NBA since 1988 up to the end of the 2000s. All Star Games Historically the NBA jerseys have always been the patriotic red/white/blue colors seen on the US Flag. Some exceptions like in the late 90s/early 00s where teams wore their regular team uniforms. The 2018 all-star game uniforms have a black/white color scheme. Overall, it's not until the mid 2010s that the NBA started to have a "BFBS" problem although its more about teams selling jerseys with colors that are not present in their current color schemes. NBA uniforms that qualify for BFBS: - Raptors “Drake” uniforms. Black only works as an accent color. However, the back trim I mention above is...even for the teams that did not ever wear a black jersey (e.g., the Jets). Something like the LA Kings is an interesting one. They were clearly jumping on the Raiders popularity. They were sort of somewhere between following and starting a trend. The White Sox, Sabres, Black Jays, Nets, Hawks, and Devils switched to black. I'd have to argue that these are BFBS...even if some (White Sox...and for me that's about it) worked out. So in short I agree with your fist sentence about adding black to the scheme, but not with the expansion sentence. Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." To the Bold: While True the Pens wanted to be like the pIRATEs and Steelers but the NHL solidified that decision (because the Bruins Protested that change) and agreed to that color change mainly because of Pittsburgh's First Hockey Team, Pittsburgh Pirates Hockey Club wore Black / Gold (Bruins were Brown / Gold back then). pirate Hockey Club was Pittsburghs First Pro Team to wear the City's colors of Black / Gold. pIRATEs MLB team wore Red / white Blue uniforms and the steelers weren't born until 1933 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So in short I agree with your fist sentence about adding black to the scheme, but not with the expansion sentence. I agree with you here! I LOVED that the North Stars added Black threading to the Lettering and Numbers (gave it a 3 tone look) and just adding the Black Accent made the jersey pop (had a home white North Stars 1991 CCM Replica (it was blank). - I still say the LA Kings are BFBS, Gretzky could have made the Kings Purple / Gold just as popular as Magic Johnson and the Lakers Purple / Gold but that's just me LOL! My Problem isn't Black as an accent color (case in point the '91 North Stars) it's when Teams abandon their look and do a complete Black makeover. Sabres Flames Capitals North Stars / Stars (color scheme change / dropping the North from the team name and then relocation, D'ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh) Flyers (as a Pens fan, I'm supposed to hate everything Flyers but I LOVED their '82 - '01 ORANGE jersey, really wish they'd bring that design back) Ducks (I know they weren't associated with Disney anymore but damn Plum / Jade was unique) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
CaliforniaGlowin Posted January 14, 2020 Share Posted January 14, 2020 It's one thing to use black in a full redesign (LA Kings, Brooklyn Nets), but to me BFBS is a black uniform when it's not part of the primary color set. You can definitely say this about the MLB, seems like White vs Black (Gray seems to be popular Road color) every game This is why I wish the NHL would go back to Home Whites, so much more Color at Home Games when it was. I grew up in the late 70s - early '90s (Home Whites) Pens Home Games at the Civic Arena were full of Color back then - Pens Home White vs Flyers Away ORANGE - Pens Home White vs Islanders Away BLUE - Pens Home White vs Capitals Away RED - Pens Home White vs Whalers Away GREEN - Pens Home White vs Kings Away PURPLE (before Gretzky Era) - Pens Home White vs Sharks AWAY Teal Now it's like watching a Chess Match - Pens Home BLACK vs whoever Away WHITE (sure, Teams have accent colors on their White uniform but it's not the same) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
