Falcons New Unis 2020

Recommended Posts

The NFL has its fair share of black helmets. Meanwhile there are only two red helmets in the league, and one of them (Washington) is burgundy and not "proper" red.

The Falcons, meanwhile, have spent a significant amount of time in red helmets. And while it's true the franchise's heights have been reached in black helmets? Those seasons ended poorly. First by getting obliterated by the Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII and then by blowing a 28-3 lead to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. So maybe black helmets aren't really the look they want to run with 😛

I'm going to deviate from the popular opinion here, which seems to like the Falcons' inaugural red helmet/black jersey look. That's an ok identity, and I wouldn't mind if they went with it. My preferred Falcons look is the 1971-1989 identity though. Red helmet, red jersey, silver pants. It's a straightforward "football" look that draws on traditional aesthetics while doing its own thing. Primarily red with silver and black highlights is unique in the NFL, and the Falcons have the historical precedent to own it.

Now granted, the old 71-89 uniforms could probably never be brought back as they were. Sleeves are smaller than they were, which would make the sleeve design of both stripes and a logo unwieldy. My ideal Falcons look, which I've hung onto since they announced a change was coming in 2003, is a mix of the 71-89 set and the 97-02 set.

The 84-89 helmet with the black facemask.

The 97-02 jersey template, with black and red switched at home. The white jersey wouldn't need to be changed.

The 97-02 silver pants with solid red socks for both home and road games.

The team likely isn't going to go in that direction. In fact I expect them to go even more modern and screw this chance at a course correction up. Still? That's my ideal Falcons identity.

I love that uniform, but I personally much prefer the Falcons in black helmets. Red is most definitely CRIMINALLY under represented in the NFL helmet colors universe, but I don’t think the Falcons should be the team that makes that switch.

I personally would rather see the Bills change back to red lids. Their set is damn near perfect right now (for the Bills, anyway), but a red helmet would be a nice distinguishing feature, and it’s a nod to their most successful NFL days.

Except the FAlcons had historically always had red lids until the early 90s.

Amazing how great that looks. I'd forgotten how good it was.

I don't care for the Bills in red helmets to be honest. I grew up with it but I don't know. Maybe that 2000s set ruined it?

I just think the white helmet with the modern logo is the perfect balance of old and new for them.

Their current look is basically as good as one can ask for, even though I prefer the old-timey blood-splatter bison.

If anything, I'd want absolutely nothing to do with the 0-4 Super Bowl teams.  The red helmet craze around here is at a fever pitch.

The Bills’ logo looks awful on a red helmet. The white is a far “cleaner” look because it eliminates the white outline on the bison and the red streak “blending” with the helmet.

The mid-2000s Bills unis were atrocious in every measure.

But these helmets were just fantastic. Do it right and it looks great.

The Broncos brought back a look they wore in four losing Super Bowls (though they made the blue darker), and the fans in Denver were ecstatic.

Time heals wounds, especially when your team won 4 AFC title games in a row, something the Patriots didn't even do.

Comparing the achievements of the Bills to that of the Patriots is a little, eh, strong, I'd say.

Yea they won 4/5 while winning 3 Super Bowls in the process. I think the bills would take that over 4 embarrassing or heart breaking losses in super bowls

Winning 4 AFC titles in a row in the early 90s is nothing to complain about, especially when the NFC dominated Super Bowls from 84-96. Every star player during that era for the Bills is either in the Bills HOF, the NFL HOF or both. The Bills have been pretty bad before/after those years, comparatively. From 1988-99, the Bills went to the playoffs 10 times (in 12 seasons).... outside of that era, the Bills went to the playoffs 9 times in 48 seasons.

It’s funny because the falcons have had black helmets for 30 years of their 53 year history. Hard to believe it’s been that long since the red helmets were a thing

I think the memory of the horrible 00s set does play a subliminal role in feelings toward the red helmet - at least to me.  When I think of the red helmet, that awful set with the royal yoke piping, side panels, outlines, etc. is the first thing that pops in my mind, and the helmet is guilty by association.  The reality is, at least to me, it was fine with the royal set, and gave them a totally unique look, as nobody else had red helmet/royal jersey (few teams even had different colored helmet/jersey with white pants at all.)

The AFC title in that era was kind of like winning the Big Sky conference and then going to the NCG against the SEC winner.  The reality of the 1990 game was that the Giants were playing a QB that had started 2 or 3 games in 7 seasons, and the world had conceded that the Bills, despite being in the AFC, (favored by a TD) would win.  The Bills didn't blow it at the end - they blew it all game long.  THey were favored by a touchdown, and would only have won by 2 had they hit it.

Those teams were very good and a lot of fun - Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, James Lofton, Shane Conlon, etc. (I still think Jim Kelly was very overrated) - but weren't in the same class as the best of the NFC.  The NFCCG was the de facto SB for a decade.

Eh. Better than the 2000s version, but I still don't think it works as well as the white helmets they wear now.

I never liked the red helmet for the Bills but I can see that now, after decades of nothing, fans there may hold dear the 4 Super Bowl appearances in a row wearing the red lids.
