Falcons New Unis 2020

The response to this on social media has been very unique... the only way I can really describe it is that it seems like people are finally catching on to when teams try gimmicky crap like this. It's a lot of purely negative commentary, but what's really interesting is that all the positive things have a "but". Someone will say they like the helmet, but the "ATL" looks really out of place. Or the same thing about the random chrome facemask, or the drop shadow, or the piping. I've never seen people so negative about the little gimmicks, but it's refreshing to see. Also A LOT of comparisons to the Mean Machine and NCAA Teambuilder uniforms, which is definitely warranted.

Finally put my finger on what these uniforms are. The white and black looks, at least.

They're these. Forgettable, generically modern uniforms.

the difference is the Falcons number font is much worse (I actually kind of liked that Jags font) and their needless helmet treatment is more visually obtrusive than what the Jags did there.

I still give the Jaguars the edge between the two because I think the number font is better and less gimmicky, and that teal flake Jaguars helmet is one of my all-time favorite helmets (which actually helped to subtly elevate an otherwise mediocre uniform just a little bit, whereas the Falcons silver facemask + satin finish combo is extremely distracting and worsens an otherwise mediocre uniform significantly).

I could have sworn at first that there were two pair, but I think it's just a really strong lighting effect.  Which is weird, because that should only happen if the pants were shiny.

For sure - but it kinda breaks up their eras.  Is there any other example of any team that constantly switches back and forth? Not counting teams like the Canucks, that switch entire pallets, but like this?  The Flyers switched from orange to black then back to orange, but they only had one black era, and I think the overwhelming majority of fans wanted orange the whole time.

Next person that quotes that image that requires scrolling for 10 minutes to get through should be banned without a vote.  Stop that.

Texas Rangers were the first team that came to mind.

The Twins are weird one, doing the navy-red co-balance and navy-heavy throughout their history. Other than that, we largely don't see teams flip-flopping. Heck, @DavidDunn21 made a good point about this when describing Superman and Spider-Man's costumes.

If you haven't watched his stuff, go do it! He brings up so many good points.

So there’s no half white sock rule anymore? I don’t hate these they are just sorta meh...could have done waayyy better. Guess Nike found a new place for super large decal, but it actually works better here. Then the chrome mask also. All the leftovers from Tampa took a trip to the ATL

No kidding. To this day, I have no idea if they're a red team or a blue team.

It seems we're not the only ones to notice the Adam Sandler connection:video removed

I'm like 99% sure that video was taken in my apartment complex...could be just a coincidence, could be same contractor reusing ideas but it's an exact copy of my Charlotte apartment. Strange strange. Literally thought I was in a horror movie for a second and someone broke in and posted a video from the very room I'm sitting in.

Here’s a look at the helmet and jersey in normal lighting conditions outside of a studio, which I think is always good to accurately judge a new uniform.

Yeah, not helping much.

Good god those numbers are ridiculously HUGE. And the GIANT ATL doesn’t help.

I like these. In the same way I liked the Rams new logos; with a caveat.

Like the Rams logo I thought this is better than what they had. I also appreciate that they didn’t just run back to the old stuff. I do believe modern uniforms can work, and find some old looks incredibly boring. It’s all about execution and presentation. The Bucs for example. I think that look is boring, but it’s superior to what they had before because they executed modern design wrong.

Like the Rams I think the execution is solid minus some things here or there. For the Rams it’s the shadows and gradients, and for Atlanta it’s the gradient as well. It’s an alternate though, so I let it slide.

Where both teams make mistakes is in the presentation. You only get one chance to make a first impression and they both botched it. If the Rams unveil the new Ram head as the primary and the LA horn as the secondary I think they get positive reactions across the board. It just seemed like the logical thing to do.

Same with the Falcons. If the black over white with black socks is the primary home, and white over black with white socks is the primary road they’d get thumbs up. Again, the alternate aside. I don’t know why the monochrome thing keeps happening because it’s such an easy fix. Make that change and they will have achieved a true modern take on a classic in a way the Bucs did not.
