So various news sources confirmed it, but you wouldn't believe it unless you read it on CCSLC?

Is this now CCSLCNN?

CCSLCBC for him

Mark Cuban has announced that nobody in the Dallas Mavericks organization will ever wear 24. Retiring the number immediately.

and the game of who can prove they care more is underway.  Next, the Nuggets will announce that they're folding in his honor, then the Rockets will all commit mass suicide.  Ball's in your court, Clippers.

My sources were TMZ and a couple other random sites like TMZ. I thought there might maybe be a chance it was a hoax.

Once the news was confirmed by the major sports stations, then I believed it.

I'm predicting the mayor of LA will sign a proclamation making August 24th, Kobe Bryant day in LA.

I mean, what happened to Kobe is an absolute tragedy, but other teams he's never even played for retiring his number or cancelling games is a bit excessive.

This isn't the first time a renowned athlete tragically passed away.

That's basically how the western conference playoffs will go.

Considering the fact that the Clippers always fall short of what's expected, they'll probably screw this up and make the Finals. That's just how the Clippers do things.

I really hate “it’s not the right time” culture. It is what it is. He was accused of rape, it was an ugly case all around, he was never convicted of it. Also true that he was a fantastic sports dad and an outspoken advocate for women’s sports later on. All of this is true and needs to be included in his obit regardless. People are complicated.

While I hated the Lakers vehemently, Kobe was someone you really couldn't hate. He had the drive, and determination you'd look for in a basketball player, or any athlete in general.

This is really tragic, RIP to all, and every team getting a shot clock violation on their first possession of the game I felt was a fitting, impromptu tribute; given the circumstances.

I get the significance of doing it on 8/24 but wouldn't his birthday be more fitting?

EDIT: Uh, wow. I never knew his birthday was August 23rd.

Or maybe on January 26th?

Looks like the head coach of the baseball team at my very first college was on the helicopter with his entire family along with Kobe and his daughter. Just a gut wrenching day all around 😭

Has any sport ever cancelled a full day because a player died?

They didn't cancel games for McNair, or Dale Earnhardt.

Isaiah Thomas played after his sister died.

Kobe would want 100% want them to play.

Serie A canceled their games when Davide Astori died. Granted, that was an active player being found dead in his room before a game, so not exactly comparable to a retired player dying with confirmation arriving less than an hour before the first tipoffs.

What an absolute tragedy. There were very few players who were as fun to “sports hate” as much as  Kobe, but I quite enjoyed his persona as a retired player, not much more grumpy about the current than other retired NBA stars (his fans are another matter). His daughter having her life cut short at just 13 is absolutely heart wrenching. Cannot imagine how tough this must be for his wife and daughters

I don't want to diminish the tragedy of what happened today, but this decision sounds rather excessive to me.

I've seen some of the tributes that other teams have done for Kobe. Class acts. I agree this is a bit excessive.

Number 8 is still available to wear though...

I don't like the culture either, but you gotta know that there were people online itching to be the victims of fights they started themselves.
