Knicks Hire Consultant to Boost Brand

The Nets are hip?

I'm reminded by the perhaps-apocryphal story of Laurence Olivier chiding Dustin Hoffman for pulling all-nighters to appear ravaged in Marathon Man: "my boy, have you tried acting?" Have the Knicks tried winning? If the Knicks win, they'll be cool again.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

If they really want to boost the brand they could start with I don't know...actually putting a competitive basketball team on the court.  Maybe even winning some games every now and then could work too.

However, sadly, nothing with the Knicks will ever be fixed unless and until Jim Dolan sells the team.  Dolan makes the Wilpons look competent by comparison.

The Knicks are a team that would be huge if they weren't a joke. Sports media is so desperate for the Knicks to be good that they started making up dumb stories about how Zion would stay in college instead of being the number one overall pick and making millions.

I know this board exists for a bunch of nerds to debate sports teams' clothing, but I think we can all agree that the Knicks aren't "hip" because of how the organization is run. They're just embarrassing. The Knicks are basically Texas football, where they just assume they'll be great because of their name and location, but are mostly hilarious to those on the outside. Except that I can remember seeing Texas win a title.

Hopefully they suggest to the Knicks that they boost James Dolan right out the door. Then they’ll be real hip!

How bout they drop the ridiculous alts and don’t buy into Nike’s scam. Raise the brands integrity. It’s the oldest NBA team after all anyway, they shouldn’t be playing in 20 different jerseys. Stick to the home and away and maybe an orange alt, that’s all they need.

The Knicks haven't had a good logo in my lifetime (~40 yrs), and have had roughly the same uniforms over that time, with the possible exception of the BFBS era.

Winning does tend to make things 'cool', but they've sucked for so long that they've actually reached irrelevant status, which is pretty damned hard for a New York team to do.

There's not a lot of cohesion in their brand now - wordmarks, uniforms, logos, nothing really goes together.  And it's not "so old it's cool", or "so basic it's cool", it's just dull, boring, and old.  Rebuilding a brand doesn't take away from anything the GM/owner are doing to try to win (not that they do much anyway), so it makes a lot of sense to try and do either an overhaul, or at least solidify it.

James Dolan

>turns a top market franchise into a undesirable laughingstock no one wants to play for

>publicly mocked Knicks fans

>banned fan favorite Charles Oakley and other Knick fans from MSG

Also James Dolan "Why's the Knicks brand failing to gain attraction?"

Interesting question in general. What do you do with a logo that's bad but has so much longevity?

In specific, I guess you revamp/retool it. 3d letters coming from the ball is mediocre but somewhat iconic.  Why was the ball once gray when orange is a team color and basketballs are orange???  The recolor in the 80s was probably best. I liked the brief Yankees NY on the shorts.  The maroon, name below number detour was awful. And the triangle on the logo always seemed pointless.  Still, I don't see much to do other than simplify and go more retro.

There's no equity in that logo.  Just because it's been around long doesn't mean it's irreplaceable.  If anything, it represents nothing but futility, and a new logo would represent a change in attitude and trajectory.

The Sixers might be a good example.  They had essentially the same logo since the 60s-mid 90s, but reached irrelevancy in the post-Barkley era.  They did as radical a rebrand as you can get (up there with the Sabers going from their blue/yellow to the black/red goat).  Not everyone loved it, but I didn't hear anyone protesting it, because the old one had come to represent the bumbling idiocracy of the former leadership, while the new one, regardless of design quality, represented change.  it helped tremendously that the AI era was mostly successful, but the point is that they erased a logo that was among the most recognizable in the league and had >30 years behind it, and everything was fine.

A Netsish rebrand with their blue/orange could work really well for them... as long as it's different enough from the Nets to avoid the copycat accusations.

You know I've been thinking about that Sixers era recently, and this exact question. I actually suspect the Sixers black-and-gold era would have gone down as another 90s laughingstock headscratcher, but Iverson singlehandedly made it cool.
