I remember you being pretty excited for that. We probably learned a similar lesson about living in warm climates 😂

Loved Florida January thru April. Wasn’t as crazy about it May thru August.

Manfred Out. He has ruined baseball.

I never thought I'd live to see the day when Gary Bettman is the most competent commissioner in sports. But here we are.

I hate to defend the guy, but it was the player’s association that rejected a bubble. It was the players who didn’t wear masks and didn’t social distance.

You can blame him and the owners for a lot, but this is not one of those times.

Not that much better. Oh, and Boston isn't a state.

They aren’t shattering records every week for new cases, so yeah they are better.

Texas, California, Arizona & Florida are some of the worst states for COVID.
NBA at least has the bubble thing going on in Florida. So that’s at least something.

If MLB & NFL still want to play, they should find alternatives for teams in those states and any other that still have out of control cases.

That is true, but the whole thing going :censored: up is a casus belli for the more traditionalist-minded owners to oust him because of all the other ways he's screwed up the game.

Has Adam Silver done anything all that bad?  I'd have him as #1 by a large margin but there might be something that I don't remember.

Kowtowing to a guy who gets butthurt over being compared to Winnie the Pooh would be a pretty big deal. Or it should be.

And saying that we should have mutual respect for a Communist dictatorship doesn't help

I guess that whole Hong King thing? That wasn’t great. But comparatively? He’s a saint.

Swabs can be done in 24 hours. Every test I’ve done had gotten results the next day. Mine just have priority tags put on them as a testing worker. I’d assume the mlb would get the same tags. And swabs are more accurate than a cheek swab

But don't all swabs have to be sent out?  So while some may get priority, not all do.  Neither swab is more accurate than other less-accessible methods.  FWIW (not much) I got tested last Thursday (nasal swab) and have yet to get my results.  They told me that weekends count in the 3-5 day estimate, but I guess they're backlogged.

Honestly, do what MLS did and boot the Marlins from the season. If another team gets that many positive tests, boot them too.

Absolutely.  These athletes are not medical professionals, and they're not even of average intelligence.  The Marlins knew there was an outbreak and LET THEIR F-ING SHORTSTOP DECIDE THAT THEY SHOULD PLAY ANYWAY.  Kick them out of the league, fine them 5 billion dollars, and lecture them for being stupid idiots.  They knew it was bad and rather than consult medical professionals, they asked the shortstop.

You know it's bad when both Arizonas make the list. You get that the virus is everywhere, right? It's entirely possible the the Marlins were infected in Philadelphia. Point being, there is nowhere to hide from this thing. Some states are worse than others, but the risk exists in all 50.

It's unlikely that they were infected in Philadelphia given when the tests were taken and how far out from exposure is required to get a positive result.  From everything I've read, you're guaranteed a false negative if tested within 24 hours of exposure, and still a high probability of false negative if within 48.  So while anything is possible when it comes to this thing, the timing would indicate that it didn't happen in Phila.

Which also begs another question of the protocol - if the Phillies are being tested now, while the chances that they were infected by the Marlins is very low, wouldn't they get false negatives due to the timing?

It's also very unlikely that it was spread to the Phillies on the field or by touching the ball or anything like that, so unless there was rule-breaking fraternization going on, I'd be surprised if the Phillies tests come back positive (or if they are positive, Id be surprised if it could be linked directly to this game.)

This is just another moment of Manfred not taking a firm stance.  Having a medical professional clear teams/players should have been a mandatory, non-negotiable aspect before they even got to the lunacy of localized travel and non-mandatory face coverings.

It does get sent out to a local lab, but with the priority tag (that MLB could easily get) it gets put to the front of the line. If thousands of guardsmen and nurses can get their results in less than 24 hours this method so could really any sports organization.

Damn, I thought we weren't supposed to talk about the second Arizona.  I kind of want to make "The Second Arizona" a GToV entrant.  Noted.

Second Arizona was a proposed plan, but it eventually got vetoed in favor of Ohio 2.

The Atheletic:

Quote

Some players asked that everyone in uniform be administered two tests — one Monday and another Tuesday — before the team is permitted to play again. The club quarantined its four-person visiting clubhouse staff — people who worked long hours and had prolonged exposure to the Marlins for three days during the season-opening series. Some of those employees were tested Sunday and are awaiting results, according to two sources. The Phillies can disinfect the visitors’ clubhouse and dugout, but they cannot do that to people.

Thought that was interesting.  Are the players getting that much say in how and when tests are performed?  Or was that simply something suggested?

edit:  More players tested positive.

feels insensitive to gripe about on-field play right now, but the Reds managed to make history and went 1-3 in the process. They're also +2 in run differential. Very Redsy thing to do.

Tonight's game is a must-win. Yes that's right. A MUST win in the fifth game of the season*!

*provided the season reaches its conclusion.

which brings up the question, if the season doesn't finish, what happens to player contracts and stats.

for contracts, would MLB try to use Force majeure when it comes to players contracts (saying we tried our best to have a season but the epidemic was out of our hands)
