CS85 10,778 Posted October 29, 2020 White Sox hire Tony LaRussa. At times like this, I'm glad I'm a Cubs fan.
Digby 6,859 Posted October 29, 2020 A nice step-up from Tony's most recent job, which as far as I could tell was just sitting next to Dave Dombrowski in the Fenway owners' box. Cannot fathom how you could look at the White Sox trajectory of recent years and think "oh yeah, that's the guy".
DG_ThenNowForever 16,701 Posted October 29, 2020 Tony LaRussa was old when he had a Sega Genesis-branded game in 1995. It's 2020! (Coach K also had a Sega Genesis-branded game. Like most aging people, I measure time in distance from key nostalgia touchpoints.)
FiddySicks 11,349 Posted October 29, 2020 So, they let go of Renteria because they didn’t think he was the guy for the future and wanted to make a bigger step by bringing in... Tony LaRussa? I like Tony LaRussa quite a bit, but he’s a legitimate fossil they’ll have to dig out of the soil at this point. I have absolutely no idea why they think this is a good move.

DEAD! 2,225 Posted October 29, 2020 He must have looked at Dusty Baker and thought, yeah, I can do a better job than him.

ManillaToad 1,344 Posted October 29, 2020 Tony is on the shortlist for greatest managers of all time and is one of the more successful managers in White Sox history. I think he will do well there

DDR 3,095 Posted October 29, 2020 Ugh, I'm just holding out hope that TLR is a bridge to a manager-in-waiting who they like for the job, but want him to get a little experience before they do. I know, I'm fooling myself.

He hasn't managed at all since 2011, which is closer in time to Steve Bartman than it is to now. He's 76 years old and acts like he's 120. I don't think he'll do well anywhere. The only reason they did this is because he and Jerry Reinsdorf are buddies.

DEAD! 2,225 Posted October 29, 2020 I am pretty sure we can list 20 managers better than LaRussa.... and Ozzie Guillen would have been a better hire.

Gary 789 Posted October 30, 2020 Tigers name AJ Hinch Manager. I like the hire as he can bring a young team into its full potential like he did with the Astros. Then again I hope he’s not a complete dumpster fire like he was with the Diamondbacks.
the admiral 29,074 Posted October 31, 2020 The problem with Tony La Russa isn't that he's some sort of white supremacist, which quite frankly feels like a reach, it's that he won't have Dave Duncan around to turn every turd off the waiver wire into a master sinkerballer. That and the endless beanball wars, the Unwritten Rules crap, and the fact that he hasn't managed in nine years, during which time the game has changed significantly and not for the better. One thing I will say in La Russa's favor is that he would never pull an ace at 70some pitches in a there-is-no-tomorrow game so that he won't go thrice through the lineup like that dumbass errand boy in Tampa. He would then proceed to use seven relievers to make six outs, yes, definitely, but he wouldn't do that.
