Sure its geographic, still a garbage division quality wise. I think you're right by saying come August; how are teams going to survive in the AZ heat?Surely not everyone can play a Chase Field all the time. I'm not from the Area, but would Florida have enough venues to support all 30 teams with present and past spring parks (Hammond Stadium, Cocoa Beach, Disney World Braves etc.)?

Florida is much more spread out when it comes to venues.  If you're working with 30 teams, some could potentially have to travel 4 hours (West Palm to Tampa) for games.  Yes you could add places like former venues such as Disney, Space Coast (former Nationals), Dodgertown, as well as the Trop and Marlins Park or some college stadiums like USF in Tampa, UCF in Orlando, or UM in Miami. If the point is limiting travel and quarantining Florida isnt the best bet.  Also weather becomes a daily issue once the summer rainy season kicks in around May-June and lasts thru September-October.

The Miami metro area is also a huge hotspot for Covid right now, so that would be a major concern too.

Arizona would be better for 30 since all would be within the Phoenix metro area, but still has its downsides like the oppressive heat.

Obviously Arizona's summers are worse, but Florida's are nothing to sneeze at either. There's a reason one team has a dome and the other has a retractable roof that's usually closed. You also have to deal with the daily thunderstorms.

It kind of is, though.  Hockey and soccer's tie-breaking methods use things that are actually a part of the game, even if they happen somewhat rarely.  At no point in a baseball game do pitchers start throwing batting practice pitches to hitters.

What's wrong with ties?  If extra inning games are a problem, which I don't think they are (just leave the game or turn it off at some point, it's just one game of 162), call it a tie at some point.

Or maybe instead of a home run contest to settle it after 10 innings, maybe they could even say after the tenth inning both teams will put one less player on the field when they go back on defense to make it easier for one team or the other to score and end the extra innings sooner.  No shortstops after the tenth, after 11 innings no more center fielder etc.

in hockey that makes sense because you can lose people to penalties, but nothing like that ever happens in baseball. They would roll out a corpse to play shortstop to have 9 players on the field.

Surprised this hasn't been brought up yet:

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-could-have-realignment-for-2020-season-with-three-10-team-divisions-report-says/

Quote

MLB is considering a three-division, 10-team plan in which teams play only within their division – a concept gaining support among owners and executives. It would abolish the traditional American and National Leagues, and realign the divisions based on geography.

...

The divisions would keep many of the natural rivals together, while playing one another before an expanded playoff format.

I like the idea. I guess I'm wondering how much of this is still flinging spaghetti at the wall to see what might stick.

Sort of like the Rams' uniforms, I would feel inclined to talk about it when it's 'real', if that makes sense.

It's where I sit.

I can get down with this.  I know these seasons/playoffs due to the Covid 19 situation are going to be different, but whatever gets the leagues to crown a champ i am fine with.

But why though?

Why what?

Why do I want something wacky? I don't necessarily want it. I want things to be normal but they won't be. So if they want to go unconventional, then they should go for it. This plan would cut down on travel so it makes sense.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has canceled the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. Members of the Class of 2020 - Derek Jeter, Marvin Miller, Ted Simmons and Larry Walker - will be inducted in July of 2021, alongside any new members elected as part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

Expanding on this, it gives them the option to try something like radical realignment for a short season and see how it works. If they really like it, maybe it becomes permanent. If it doesn't, it's not like everyone will freak out over one year's oddity of a potential World Series of Phillies-Cubs (trying to pick two teams from the same league but in different divisions this year). Heck, two teams from the same division could potentially face off if the proposed alignments are correct (Reds-Pirates or Braves-Phillies).

Obviously, though, the primary thing with all of this is the logistics. Even if you don't turn the "new" Central and East into largely bus leagues, you're still cutting down significantly on the total number of flights at play by having both L.A. teams together; both Bay Area teams together; both Chicago teams together; and both New York teams together.

For example: the Indians can fly to Chicago, play a 3-game set with the White Sox, a 3-game set with the Cubs, and drive to Milwaukee to play a 3-game set with the Brewers before flying back home. Fewer touch points, fewer people necessarily involved, and lower cost. If you keep the current league alignment, you're rarely if ever going to be able to duplicate that scenario.

I tried to resist it, but this got me.

I would've found room for some clips from Angels in the Outfield, Little Big League, Hardball, Tiger Town, original Bad News Bears, and the "baseball in film" at the end is unnecessary (yeah, no :censored:, dude. I didn't think we were watching actual baseball highlights), but still well done.

That was very well done. It just goes to show how many good baseball movies have been made.
