I understand this is an unprecedented situation to moderate, but I think this is a strange tack to take. You know darn well there are people here who don't think this is serious. We're two or three days removed from a basketball player testing positive after touching everything in sight to mock the threat. A certain cable channel is literally telling its viewers that it's a political plot and a North Korean bioweapon. Sticking to the facts without the context in this situation (I think) would lead to underestimating the problems society faces. The facts are that a few thousand people in the US are sick and a few dozen have died is not that noteworthy in a country of 350M. The context of every health expert telling us this is going to get worse is the reason everything is cancelled. The facts are the tracks are clear; the context is every expert in the world says there's a train coming.

Yeah, this.

And frankly, equating medical professionals with Facebook threads, as if they have anything close to the same credibility, is exactly contributing to the death of expertise.

There's nothing wrong with acknowledging the very real possibilities, especially in the same thread where we’re seeing the consequences of denial. Nobody’s dwelling on it, nobody’s fearmongering, nobody’s freaking out. We’re calmly discussing why the leagues are taking the action they are, why it’s good that they’re taking they are, and what kind of moron an athlete would have to be to pretend this isn’t a pretty big deal.

An article about an educated guess that this virus may affect upwards to 150 million people is just conjecture.

When I, a truck driver in Buffalo, pull that number out of thin air, that's conjecture. When there is a consistent voice from experts in positions of authority in multiple locations around the world, that's just the reality we live in.

People complain about the measures being taken, and they'll laugh when the Wuhan virus isn't as apocalyptic as they thought it would be... and they'll never grasp that it was the measures taken now that stopped it from being so so much worse...

Social media is a disease as much as COVID-19 is...

Like, constantly.

This reminds me of when I started to think about plastic waste and realized that everything is freaking plastic.

Reminds me that I still haven't watched Iron-Blooded Orphans and it's still just sitting there on Hulu. Maybe that's what I'll get into.

Checkmarks on Twitter reporting that D1 spring sport athletes will receive an extra year of eligibility.

Still lots of very valid baseball-specific questions to be addressed. Will "juniors" still be "juniors" for draft purposes (i.e., are they able to return and be re-drafted? do they have that leverage?) Will roster sizes increase? Will scholarship amounts be increased?

OK, I'm going to allow some latitude. We're going to trust you guys to keep things on track and in perspective. Fair enough?

technically there are non American sports out there, you just have to know where to find them.  If I am not mistaken Liga MX is still playing.

Here's a little good news. Heard an infectious disease specialist say on Doctor Radio on Sirius/XM that the virus is a "weak one" as in it is easily killed by washing your hands or using hand sanitizer. Now we just need to get 320 million people to practice good hand hygiene. Good luck with that.

Isn't soap and water just as good as hand sanitizer?

Univision, ESPN Deportes and Fox Deportes.  Chivas has their own network and Atletico San Luis is not on TV.

Better actually. But the doctor made it a point to say that hand sanitizer works very well too. Hand sanitizer is not as effective on tougher viruses, but it's very effective on COVID-19. The doctors on the show were saying that the virus itself is a pretty weak virus and that it's relatively easy to kill. None of that means the effects of actually contracting the virus are weak. It just means that good hand hygiene is very effective at helping to stop the spread.
