The Sixers ran into the same problem with their parchment colored city jerseys. They first wore them with white accessories but it just didn't work and they've worn blue accessories ever since.

Great example. It's amazing what the blue accessories do for the look here.

My NFL concept series (in progress) --ATL, CLE, NE, WAS done. AZ updated 04/21/23.

Okay, so I don't HATE these like the general public seems to. I do think they are all over the place, and like the Falcons, I think there were close to a pretty good, modern update. Here's what I would've like to see:

spacer.png

What I adjusted:

Home:

  • Removed chest patch
  • Yellow numbers instead of gradient numbers
  • Blue/white socks instead of full blue

Away:

  • Removed chest patch
  • Adjusted shoulders so they are consistent with the home jersey
  • Identical to home from the waist down

In my opinion, this is all they need for a successful update.

This is great. It shows you how there was a solid idea for a jersey in this mess and they really :censored:up.

By the way, LAFC instituted a new brand in LA that had immediate legitimacy and immediate cool factor in the broader LA metro area (at least, that's my understanding), and they didn't have to try so hard to do it.

While there are aspects of the new Rams set I like, in general, simple is better. There's nothing simple about the new LA Rams. LAFC is "LA" + a wing in gold and black. Boom, done. LA Rams are a segmented horn + bone + white/yellow accents + lots of pant colors + sol + instagram photos of LA locales. Doesn't work, my friends.

Which is more immediately "cool" to you?

The horns. It's LA + a horn. It looks pretty simple to me.

Eh, I find it looks really flawed when you stop to examine it closer than a casual look. LAFC's logo is really well-put together and simple; it's an LA, but the A has the connecting bit replaced by a wing. There's no complexities, no fluff, it's simple, easily-readable iconography...whereas the Rams' is completely botched.

Is the logo trying to show a horn wrapping over the A, as suggested by the fact that the L is casting a shadow? If so, it's not really three-dimensional enough to make that type of thing work. And if that's the case, why would you then gradient the horn into the A if the horn is supposed to be above the rest of the A in terms of framing?

If that's the idea, you should've at least given the connection points a thin blue keyline to delineate where the rest of the A stops and where the horn begins. Otherwise, it looks like it's all supposed to be the same shape with random gray patches, which gives the wrong impression altogether (which is usually when you know a design isn't good). At least with a keyline, the logo would've had some implied depth with the shadows.

Is it trying to show an A as part of the horn? In that case, they picked the worst letter to try and spin into the shape of a ram's horn, because a capital A connects at the top in a pointed edge, not a round edge. There's a reason @ uses a lowercase a and not an uppercase A; it's easier to spin round shapes off of the lowercase a. A capital R works infinitely easier to spin off into a ram's horn shape because it's already got a round edge to it to slip the horn into, and the team itself knew this going into the rebrand;

spacer.png

Yeah, this wordmark is a holdover from STL, but the fact is that the shape of an R is way easier to get a horn out of than the shape of a capital A. They put too much emphasis on "LA" as the primary brand and completely locked themselves into a corner with actually trying to get the ram's horn in, which is why the logo we got looks so awkward. It's hamfistedly shoving a round peg into a square hole.

Honestly? As much I love the old Hollywood aesthetic, I think the LA horn looks cooler. It’s brighter, more fun, and more representative of modern LA instead of an era long gone. Also, I don’t really like the LA wing on its own. It needs the shield to work.

The problem for me is the logo would look better with tweaks that probably won’t happen. If the part where the yellow fades into white was all yellow, and the shadow effects on the 'A' and under the 'L' were gone I’d love the LA horn. Until that happens, the Ram head is the logo for the LA Rams as far I’m concerned.

Yeah this is pretty much how it should’ve gone. I had no issue with the home blue/yellow as it was. Ok maybe the gradient numbers, but I think they did really good so your changes are a wash.

The away uniform was where they royally screwed up. I don’t mind the bone color at all. The issue was I didn’t understand why they made a modern version of the old royal set, but not the old white set just in bone. So your design addresses that in spades. This should be the modern Rams.

On the bright side at least no one tried to force anthracite in to this set somewhere unless "bone" is the new anthracite.  When I first saw these this is the first thing that came to mind

Now I'll submit that "more than anything has sucked before" may be a stretch but these look like something an out of work costume guy came up with for an LA team in a football movie.  The Chargers on the other hand did a pretty good job.

No, I mean, in your experience, are the helmet and/or logos designed before the whole process of designing the uniform begins? (I believe you've said in the past that Nike has little to no input on helmets and logos, if I'm remembering that correctly.) Like, in this instance, would Nike be given the job of designing a uniform based on that helmet, which would obviously dictate their choices? Or would it all be happening simultaneously?

ahh i see. it all varies from project to project, but generally, the logos will be done at NFL Creative and the uniforms at Nike simultaneously. (which is why the briefs with concepts like "modern LA" are important). when the logos are ready, Nike will drop them onto the uniform. and usually, thats easy enough, like with the Dolphins it was always going to be whatever the new logo was placed on the side of the helmet. and im certain that kind of process is dictated by NFL because i do know some details of another uniform redesign (i hate being coy, but im really afraid to say too much) where Nike wanted to explore a lot more at the teams request, but was squashed/dictated by NFL. so it turned out.... differently. team was unhappy and Nike looked bad in front of the team, even though they were directed by NFL to do what had been done.

with the Rams though, thats more unique because its not just a logo drop on a helmet. it would only be my guess that all the logos were done first, then Nike explored ways of incorporating that into the new uniform. making this one more unique, the Rams creative team was more involved in the whole package a little more than usual as well, though that could only be on a conceptual level. i don't know the details of their involvement. again, all directed by NFL.

I haven't posted in years (although I often stop by and lurk), but since the Rams have always been one of my favorite teams I felt I had to register my opinion. These new uniforms are heartbreakingly awful. Gradient numerals. Grey road set. No yellow jersey. Generic rounded font (I prefer some form of block). Worst of all, the notorious segmented horn. At least the brighter blue of the helmet looks good, but that's about the only positive comment I can make. A definite and lamentable downgrade.

As an added bonus, the white insets on the away uniform look like a double layered piece of fabric in this video.

I almost guarantee that the Rams are gonna go mono the majority of the time and the yellow pants are going to hardly be used.

God, the more I see of these, the more I hate them.

Yeah, I agree. That seems to be where things are going for the foreseeable future... Atlanta, New England, and these. We've had a bunch of people chiming in with all three of these designs to say they aren't so bad as long as they avoid the monochrome.  Well, they won't. I expect the Rams will be all blue for most of their home games (unless they wear the possibly even worse all gray), the Falcons all black, and the Patriots don't even have a non monochrome option.

Since they didn’t designate an alternate uniform, can’t the Rams just keep wearing their throwbacks as many times as the NFL will let them, once they realize that their fans hate this new pile of crap?

They could top it off by slapping the classic ram horn decal on the shiny blue helmet (the only redeeming part of the new set).

They have two more uniforms left to reveal, IIRC. Which means either remade throwbacks or (more likely) at least one more trash heap.

The Rams don’t have a throwback in the rotation.
