Report: Tennessee Titans Were Originally Nicknamed 'Pioneers' Before Leak

Recommended Posts

My elementary school picked pioneers as the school mascot. Even as an 8 year old going to a school that was once a Pony Express stop, I found it to be embarrassingly hokey.

cant even imagine it for an NFL team.

I'm gonna go ahead and take your word for it because I will not give those doofuses at Bleacher Report my click.

I had always heard that the finalists were Titans, Pioneers, Wolves, Blitz, and Copperheads, although I think that Copperheads may have just been a fan movement and not an actual consideration from within ownership.

Side note, I can't believe that they're allowed to post like a thirty-word fun fact and call it an article, but that's sorta Bleacher Report's thing I guess.

I wonder if there’s any preliminary logo sketches or mockups tucked away somewhere. I’d be really intrigued to see what direction they’d have taken with a Pioneers identity. I’m guessing it’d have included a coonskin cap.

Wasn't Tennessee Presidents also considered? Also Tuxedos? Or am I just making stuff up without Googling it first?

If you think Titans is a generic name, wait until you learn about:

Cardinals

Falcons

Panthers

Bears

Cowboys

Broncos

Lions

Chiefs

Rams

Vikings

Raiders

Eagles

I think I remember Presidents, Tuxedos I'm not sure of. I also think that I vaguely remember Generals or Commanders as one of the higher choices as well.

I'm pulling all of these from an old book on Titans history that I used to have, with one of the pages being a pretty long list of all the potential nicknames that the team considered at some point. I wish I could find it, it was a pretty interesting glimspe into all of the considerations for a rebranding team.

Were Bud Adams and Don Adams related?

This is true but

- A lot of these teams are original to either the NFL or AFL, which basically gives them exemptions for having generic names.

- The Titans, on the other hand, were created in the late 90s.

- If the Titans had an Ancient Greek theme it would be totally different, but no, their theme is arguably the most generic in the league.

- Despite there being no oil in Tennessee, Tennessee Oilers is a better identity in every way than Tennessee Titans.

Listen, I hate the Titans with every fiber of my being. If I had 2 bullets and was in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden and the Titans, I would shoot the Titans twice. However, saying the Titans is a generic name is insane considering the actual generic sports names not only

in the NFL, but all sports. Titans is far from generic.

Nashville is nicknamed Athens of the South, so it does actually tie into the city

What the hell do you think the whole theme was about?

What about the sword on the sleeve?

What about the flame of Prometheus?

What about this guy on the sidelines?

The whole theme IS Ancient Greek.

Are you being difficult just to be difficult??

"Be difficult?" By stating the underlying problem in all of this? That the Oilers identity is better, and that the Titans actually had the Oilers identity at one point but decided to change from it?

Well I'm wrong, their team does have an Ancient Greek theme. I don't think it's done very well though, the sword and flame in the logo could refer to anything. And about the generic theme argument, there is a difference between generic and classic. Even if the difference can be subjective.
