That's some fine oxymoron work right there.

The old one looked like clip art you’d find on a menu of a pirate themed restaurant.

Yes, that was kind of the whole point.

Now, if the argument is that the pirate theme in general is lame, then that’s understandable. I disagree, but that’s your right, and I at least understand that much. But that’s an entirely different argument.

The Super Bowl era set had a cheesy pirate theme feel because that’s what they were going for. The current set feels like an Iron Maiden themed van got into a head on collision with the Bucs equipment truck.

Actually, the old logo was more reflective of the illustrative style (at the time) of the creator of the identity. If you look at that and the original Baltimore Ravens logo set closely, you'll notice similarities in the art style, chiefly in the almost "comic book-esque" look and feel.

I'm sure I've explained all this before, but the guy who created those sets (and, coincidentally, the identity for St. Mary's College and his alma mater, Hawai'i is Kurt Osaki, head of Osaki Creative Group.

(Side note: that kind of unique creative touch is sorely missing in this era of exclusive league apparel deals...the problem with the same company helming three different leagues all at once is everything begins to look really similar after a while and it just becomes visually fatiguing.)

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

I’d be okay with sleeve stripes with an overlaid pirate ship for the jerseys. If the Bucs go too simple, their uniforms would mimic their Florida counterparts. More Jacksonville than Miami, however. Not enough going on in a uniform can roll some eyes. Simplifying a uniform is always a good idea, but there’s a fine line between that and utter destruction.

The Jags uni is fine. Just imagine a gold or Teal outline on the numbers. It's boring, yes, but that one element takes their set from a 9/10, to a 6.5/10

Imagining it and it actually being there are two separate things. Outside of the teal jersey and pants, they’re the knock-off Raiders. They screwed the pooch big time with their latest “update”.

I can imagine a black and gold double outline of the teal ones and it looks GREAT.  Switch the numbers on the aways to teal and then a black and gold double outline on that and you've got a perfect upgrade.

NBC's logo is very abstract; an ultimate exercise in minimalism.

When I get the virus and die, I'm gonna call it my ultimate exercise in minimalism.

There's a giant pirate ship in the stadium! They're pretty clear about their intentions.

It was sad when Treasure Island decided it didn't want to be just a pirate theme anymore. It'd be a shame for the Bucaneers to do the same.

A football team based in Tampa, Florida that has a cartoon character pirate for a mascot and a giant pirate ship in their stadium basically requires an identity that skews in the older, slightly campy pirate theme direction.
