Claystation360
I'll say from watching the behind the design video for Falcons, something Rich said seemed to resonate. It could've just been my interpretation ( because I am at work.) but it seemed liked Nike presents options of modern, conservative, traditional and radical designs and it's up to the team as to what direction they want to go and elements from those they choose to incorporate. So that could say a bit more about the two different paths the NFC South clubs took. #DTWD #GoJaguars
Gothamite
I've never been in a Nike pitch meeting, but I know people who have, and from what they say it sounds like every pitch meeting I've ever been in, where the designers come in with many varied options that they present and push unequally. BBTV
1 hour ago, Quillz said: With all this talk of how Tampa Bay didn't get influenced by Nike, I'm really confused. So, Nike can just dictate what a team's uniforms look like without any oversight? They could have just said to the Bucs, "here's what your new uniforms will look like." The way it gets described here makes it sound like teams somehow have very little say except in rare cases. I must be misunderstanding. The teams make the calls. As has been pointed out, they either provide direction and issue vetos, or they just say "we don't know what we want... just make something." In either case, the blame (or praise) goes to the teams, and everyone that bitches about Nike is an idiot. Nike is very persuasive, but the teams still are the ones that succomb to that. Additionally, we don't even know for sure if the teams have to use Nike's design teams. They could probably hire independent designers - like Simon or even a local firm or in-house team. Basically, people need to blame the teams. Nike, Reebok, UA, they're all the same. d 47 minutes ago, Gothamite said: Of course teams have the final say. But Nike is very persuasive, and often have too much control in the final process. Totaly. We heard in the Falcons video how the team people were quoting Nike lines, like "Nike likes to make what they call a 'closet', with lots of options'. It's clear that the Falcons gave Nike some high level guidelines, and then let Nike drive the rest - and they were very easily persuaded. Still their fault. 4 minutes ago, Gothamite said: I've never been in a Nike pitch meeting, but I know people who have, and from what they say it sounds like every pitch meeting I've ever been in, where the designers come in with many varied options that they present and push unequally. My completely uninformed guess: "Conservative" = underdesigned, plain and boring (i.e. the Jaguars' current uniforms) "Traditional" = based on old uniforms from the team's history (i.e. the Bucs' current uniforms) "Modern" = middle ground between conservative and radical (i.e. the Jets' current uniforms) "Radical" = the stereotypical Nike uniforms (i.e. the Titans' current uniforms) POTD: 2/4/12 3/4/

"Conservative" = Jaguars, "traditional" = Tampa Bay and (maybe the Chargers but doubtful) I guess. Minnesota, Miami, Detroit, Seattle are "modern" and "radical." being the Jags and Bucs 1.0, Titans and now Falcons I'm not using the exact words he used from the video so don't take it verbatim. #DTWD #GoJaguars

BBTV
If we're limiting the examples to strictly Nike's designs since they took over the contract: Conservative: minimalist, clean, lots of negative space = Jags 2.0 Traditional: blockish fonts, stripes are only real design element, and numbers have outlines = Bucs 2.0 Modern: mostly traditional, but with stylized elements like different stripes, custom fonts, etc. = Lions, Vikings, Dolphins, Radical: Uniform contains first-time-ever details, lots of design elements competitng for attention, unlike anything seen in NFL, for good or bad = Browns, Seahawks*, Bucs 1.0, Titans**, Falcons, Jets***, * by far the best of this lot. It's become their signature look, and in time, will IMO look almost conservative compared to the rest of the uniforms in this list. ** this could be considered modern, but the shoulder swords and side panels and mix-and-match really pushes it too far for me to include it in that class. *** this could also be considered modern, but the shoulder spikes and oversized wordmark push it to radical since those haven't been used before. Sport
19 hours ago, Gothamite said: There's also a sense of "they're the professionals, why did we bring them in if we're not going to listen to them?". Teams that don't have a very strong idea of what they want when they go into the meeting can get easily steamrollered. This. I think a lot of these teams said "you're the experts. We'll listen to you" and then Nike, who can be a bit of a bad faith partner, didn't do right by the teams they were working with, and only worried about what moves would showcase themselves most. Some of the teams redesigned in this era look like they were designed to be part of a line of athletic wear utilizing the prescribed colors rather than a football team with its own aesthetic and brand history. I don't know how you otherwise explain some of the design decisions that appeared on the Jags, Bucs, Browns, and Titans. The Bucs digital alarm clock numbers, for example. It's feels like an element that was already designed, that Nike wanted to use for a while, and finally found a team to sign off on it and didn't care whether it made sense for that team or if it even looked good. People say "well the teams make the ultimate call" and that's true, but Nike is NIKE and when those guys walk into the room I can see how a group that isn't sure what they want or doesn't really care that much could acquiesce and listen to whatever Nike says. My sense is the Buccaneers decision makers spent the last few years walking around their offices, looking at the photos from the Super Bowl on the walls every day, juxtaposed with what the team was wearing, and just said "christ we look like clowns. Let's just go back to the winning look."
DejaEntendu
The Orange alternates look decent, but I’d rather have the true creamsicles, at this point, and they wouldn’t go with two orange options. I’d really love to see the white creamsicles return, too. Does anyone with the knowhow feel like subbing orange for red on the pewter set? I think that would look decent. Sport
Prediction: Based on this Bucs reversal to the old unis I think the NFL is going to relax the one helmet rule and I suspect the Bucs know this. Here's why - if they felt like the one helmet rule was going to continue then they would've taken this redesign as an opportunity to design something that works with a modern set, but allows for the possibility of creamsicle throwbacks. ie they would've gone with white shelled helmets. They went with pewter shells, though, which means they either don't intend to ever wear the creamsicle throwbacks for the foreseeable future (very possible), or they know the one helmet rule is going away and they'll get have to best of both worlds with the new red unis and creamsicle throwbacks.
