What’s nonsense is pretending a privateer who had to report back to a commander or government official presented him or herself with the same level of dress and decorum (or lack thereof) as a career sea burglar. 🙄

What's also nonsense is to assume as irrefutable fact that said privateer garbed himself in the "same level of dress" and conducted himself with the "same... decorum" when he was in the midst of attacking and seizing the naval vessels of opposing nations as he would dress while "report[ing] back to a commander or government official".

Buccaneers were privateers, and privateers were pirates. It’s literally 2 words talking about the same thing just ones backed by the Spanish and French were known as buccaneers, and ones backed by the English were known as pirates.

Privateers was the term that the English used to describe privately-owned ships licensed to attack and seize ocean-going vessels from nations at war with the British crown, as well as the personnel that manned said ships. Buccaneers was a term that came to be applied to the personnel - initially French, but later also Dutch and English - manning similarly-licensed ships and operating specifically in the Caribbean.

Privateers/buccaneers carried letters of marque from heads of state and/or governmental officials that granted them the right to attack and seize ocean-going vessels hailing from nations at war with the issuing country. Pirates carried no such authorization from heads of state and/or governmental officials, which meant that their attacks on ocean-going vessels were considered the crime of piracy.

Now, did nations sometimes engage in the practice of issuing letters of marque to common pirates in an effort to expand the harassment of their enemy-states? Yes. Did pirates sometimes accept said letters of marque and take on the air of legitimacy - and governmental protection - that they bestowed? Yes. Did privateers/buccaneers sometimes succumb to the temptation of attacking and seizing the vessels of nations not covered by the letters of marque they'd been issued, thus engaging in piracy? Yes. Were letters of marque sometimes forged by privateers/buccaneers and pirates in order to expand the scope of the vessels that they could prey upon. Yes.

At the end of the day, there was always some level of back and forth movement going on between the worlds of government-licensed privateering/buccaneering and completely lawless piracy. Further, should privateers/buccaneers be captured by the naval forces of any country other than that which issued the letters of marque that they carried, they'd likely be tried and hung as pirates. However, there was a difference - no matter how subtly technical - between privateers, buccaneers and pirates.

(And let's not even get started parsing the difference between the French privateers dubbed corsairs and the pirates hailing from Turkey and North Africa that were also labeled with the name. Oh, my head.)

I wish I had a Jeffrey Epstein gimmick account where I would just reply to long and well-researched posts with "What does that got to do with :censored:?"

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Every color you can pigeonhole to a decade. Who cares?!? Saying a color is "so 90s so it must go" is one of the lamest habits of this board.

Who says that aside from this guy? If anything I see more people championing 90s colours. One of the most consistent arguments for the Marlins returning to teal is that they should embrace it, as it represents their nature as a 90s expansion team.

Ditch the boring ass pewter and replace it with orange. Pewter is a 90's color, kinda like black MLB uniforms.

How is pewter a 90s colour? It wasn't a trendy 90s choice like black, navy, teal, or purple. It was used by one team.

Hardly enough to call it a "90s colour."

My guess is how it darkened the team colors as a whole which was big in the late 90s early 2000s but then that would mean so is red, and black

When I think of 90s colours I think of teal, purple, navy, and black. Slate blue and maroon/burgundy to a lesser extent.

One reason people love the pewter for the Bucs is because it was unique. And still is. No one else uses it. I'm not sure it qualifies as a "90s colour" given the single-team use of it.

I do like the creamsicle too and wouldn’t be upset if they ever went back, but I can’t help but be a bit partial to pewter because, as mentioned, no one else uses it and it looks so d*mn cool and intimidating when paired with red.

That was a brilliant color pairing, they could have easily went a bit cliche and just went black with red/orange, but instead they bust out a cannonball-like color that pairs just as well with the red/orange, achieves the same intimidation factor, and is totally unique all at once. The Bucs may have some uniform problems right now, but the color scheme has nothing to do with it. They had, in my opinion, one of the top five looks in the NFL for the Super Bowl set’s run and if they stripped things back down to that kind of design, they’d be more than fine again.

My problem with the pewter is that it looks like brown on Nike's matte fabrics. The Bucs need to get away from it until Nike can figure out how to make it work.

I don’t think it is either, I’m just thinking of a possible explanation, faulty as it maybe.

That’s definitely valid and fair. I still think the helmet color/finish looks great though, maybe a decent compromise (until Nike can get the pewter right) is a new set with a pewter helmet and white primary pants? I’ve thought their pewter/red/white and pewter/white/white combos historically have looked better than they’re given credit for. And keep some pewter trim on the jersey and pants for good distributive balance (as a trim rather than a solid I think it’d look fine, color replication problems notwithstanding).

I’m not at all opposed to a creamsicle comeback, but if there’s a way to salvage pewter, I’d want to see that really tried first.

It's not "boring" either. Black, red, blue, yellow, etc. The standard sports colors that every team uses in some form are boring. The unique color that nobody besides the Bucs use is the opposite of boring. Needs to choose a different word to express his dislike for the color.

I feel like this discussion has been had before, but I see it as the opposite. The old pewter on the shiny fabric looked brown in certain lighting, part of why I always found it kinda ugly. The current matte consistently looks dark gray.
