I’d be really surprised if Tampa Bay uses a straight-up varsity block font. Nearly every new football uniform we’ve seen in the last 10-15 years has featured a numeral font with some degree of “uniqueness”.

True, and those photos i shared are very pixelated due to size limitations.  They could be block style with a little bit of detail missing.

And nearly all have been inferior to a straight-up varsity block font. If it's not better, don't do it.

"If it's not better, don't do it". That maxim applies to literally everything though, and I'm not the type of person to abuse the term "literally". I have no issue with teams applying a unique font to their jerseys, it helps add to a unique identity. I don't want every single team using the same font just like I don't want them all using the same jersey template.

Yes, but in the Bucs' case the desire to be unique and cute with their number font gave us the alarm clock numbers. Which are an embarrassment to everyone involved.

So it's probably in their best interests to return to block and just leave well enough alone. Not every team needs to do that, but a return to simplicity is probably the Bucs' best choice at the moment.

To everyone saying no new uniform in the past two decades has gone with straight block? I'd like to remind you all of the Bills' current uniforms. It can be done if the team is committed enough to tell the supplier (Reebok back then, Nike now) that block is what they want.

I don't think using the worst example in living memory is really fair to count as a rule for sports design though.

Oh I'm not saying it should be. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm just saying that, in the specific case of the Bucs, a return to something fairly simple and traditional is probably the best way to move on from the current mess.

I’m not advocating for this at all but the Bucs did a test run with special number fonts in their practice uniforms prior to the redesign.  I don’t recall them being well received

That wasn't a test run. That's just the number font they wore with their practice uniforms at the time. I don't believe they ever considered going to those on their actual game uniforms.

People seeing Bucs practice shots and thinking they were changing number fonts were one of the great annual traditions around here. The other one being seeing the Red Wings' straightened NOBs during the NHL pre-season and thinking it was a change 😛

These practice jerseys were from the early 2000's, around the Super Bowl give or take a year or two.  While prior to the redesign, it was almost 10 years before the alarm clock redesign.

Well I think we'd have a much better visual world if more designers/clients would follow the principle. Too often we see change for change sake. If we could just take a breath, be confident, and only change when it is a better visual solution, the overall visual impact on our world would be immense.

I myself fall into the trap now and then but have stopped short of pulling the trigger. Early on in my company's existence I changed its identity yearly. Then in 2004 I came up with the identity I have today. I still revisit it every year, present new concepts/looks, and get feedback. To date, the original still wins out and looking back over the past 16 years of concepts, I'm sure happy I didn't push through any of the Tampa Bayeque designs.

The other problem with these besides the number font and obnoxiously big helmet logo (that was "cleaned up" but actually downgraded), is that theres too much pewter and on matte fabric and it never looks pewter, depending on the lighting it looks either brown or anthracite.

I actually like the big logo on the Bucs helmet. I think it works for them. Unpopular opinion though

I guess I wasn’t clear.  I know these were actual practice uniforms.  What I meant was It would seem the team fiddled with number fonts via practice shirts instead Of actual uniforms.

Not in the Tampa Bay area, they’re pretty well liked. Personally I wouldn’t mind it being shrunk down to maybe 20% but either way I like it.

Speaking as a non-fan out-of-the-area type, I don't mind the large logo either. I just don't like the logo itself. The 1997 to 2013 logo instead would look fine at the same size the modern version is displayed on the helmet.

I thought it would be hard to find a number font worse than the Bucs’ current numbers. I was wrong. This is 100x worse

I couldn’t disagree more. It’s certainly not great as a number font, but it’s definitely better than the current mess. It’s basically Romulan Falcon, which is the same font as the old Bucs wordmark (which is WAY better than the robotic looking crap they’re using now).

Yuck that script is stuck in 1997, just my opinion. New one is much cleaner looking.

I'm not sure where the idea that the large flags on the helmet are popular in Tampa comes from. I'm living here, and most people who mention the uniforms either say they need to go to the Creamsicles or the Super Bowl look. I don't think I've heard a single person say they like the giant flag logos on the helmet.

Ok we may have a leak for the uniform number font.  A person in a Bucs fan group I’m in on Facebook saw this poster in a store in South Tampa.  Check out the 2020 font at the bottom.

Does anyone else kind of see bucco Bruce in the top image? As if the current flag is part of his hat?

Any concepts out there with the super bowl era jersey swapped to orange? Pewter/orange/pewter?  I suppose madden would just let you swap in the creamsicles themselves.
