You're right there. The pewter and creamsicle sets are just totally contrasting. 

Tampa shouldn't have one foot in the 80's and one in mid 90's. Just commit to one or the other.

I dunno...I don't expect someone to realize that the Twins wordmark changed in 2009...it's fairly subtle, but I admit I just cannot even draw an analogy when someone thinks today's hornets look the same as 1988's Hornets. To me that's like not being able to tell the difference between a motorcycle and a van.  

 

Using those two Chevys is a good analogy. There are some clear differences between the two that even a novice would notice. The rear quarters are the main difference. The 57 has "fins" and the 55 doesn't. To give a good example of how we see uniforms vs. how civilians see them - most people wouldn't even notice the difference between the shape of where the headlights are on the 55 vs. the 57. Or how the front wheel and rear wheel wells are cut differently on the 57. There are quite a few other differences, but you get the idea. Also, I doubt anyone wants to read a post with a bunch of pictures of a couple cars.

You know, it definitely IS possible for them to find a nice balance between the two eras and make it look nice. Orange and pewter is (I think) a surprisingly sharp looking color combination. Add a little bit of red to that, and they theoretically could pull it off. The problem is, I don’t trust Nike, and I sure as hell don’t trust the Bucs, to actually find a happy medium and make it work.

I think that certain colors (like Midnight Green as you mentioned) worked well in both fabrics, but matte still holds the edge for me in pretty much every case except for teams with metallic colors. Certain teams in particular really did not benefit from the shiny finish-

 

 

However, since being corrected that Pewter is not actually a metallic color, I think that one serves as an exception to my rule.

If the bucs were to go away from pewter and go anthracite, I always thought these would be a great direction for the helmet. They also fit the cannon ball look.

That reminds me of a conversation I had with somebody back in the summer of '13 when the Vikings' had debuted their current look but had yet to wear them in a game.  (I believe I've told this story on here before, so bear with me if you've heard it before.)

 

This guy was kind of a semi-friend (husband of my wife’s best friend) who is also a big Viking fan, and we were hanging out in some kinda couples-get-together thing, and the subject of the Vikings' new uniforms comes up. He tells me he’s very excited that the Vikings are (I’m quoting here) “going to wear their throwbacks full time now.” I say, no, they’re getting brand new uniforms. He says, yeah, but they’re just new versions of the throwbacks. So, of course, I start to explain just a few of the numerous ways in which these new uniforms are nothing like the throwbacks. I’m not even done talking before I start to get the here-we-go-again eye roll from him. And then he says (quote again) “yeah, they’re not exact, I guess, but, you know… plain white numbers, stripes on the sleeves… they're basically the throwbacks, right?”

But, if you think about it, that's exactly why teams can get away with saying the whole "respect the past, embrace the future" thing.  We know it's just marketing-speak, and they really aren't embracing anything but new jersey sales, but to the average fan, that phrase probably makes perfect sense. I've heard plenty of fans claim that the reason the Chargers recent switch to powder blue was so great was because "everyone loves those throwbacks".

Yes, that is the  Nuggets City uniform being called a throwback. Despite the fact that the only two throwback elements on that uniform is the rainbow (that isn’t applied the same way) and the skyline.
