Washington NFL Franchise Retires Name and Logo

Recommended Posts

As a fan of the Washington Football Team, a few quick thoughts.

1. I'm glad they're changing the name, the old one was a racist slur, and I won't be sad to see it gone.

2. I will miss the old helmet logo, as that was pretty respectful, but since it's paired with THAT name, it really has to go.

3. I'll probably still wear my old merch for a while (I had actively been buying only merchandise that didn't feature the name, merely the logo and color scheme. I think the only thing I still have with the R-word on it is my LaVar Arrington authentic, but I don't really wear that.)

4. I love that they're keeping the burgundy & gold, because I want some consistency with the team history, plus it's a really fantastic color palette.

5. My hopes for the future uniforms: Burgundy helmet, Burgundy Jersey, Gold Pants at home. Burgundy Helmet, White Jersey, Burgundy Pants on the road. No White pants, and never go all Burgundy. Keep Gold facemasks. Have a consistent striping pattern on the helmet, shoulders, pants, and socks (I'd like thin white, thick gold, thin white on burgundy, thin gold, thick burgundy, thin yellow on white)

6. 2020 is a lost season for the team for many reasons, so I'm okay with a place holder name for this season.

7. Of the many names mooted around, I like Red Tails the most, then Red Wolves, then Warriors.

8. No preference between Red Tails and Redtails, nor Redwolves and Red Wolves.

9. I probably won't be buying merch or going to any of the games until Snyder's gone (which seems plausible that it might happen) because I have ni desire to enrich Danny Boy any further.

Washington's creative team is typically very good at what they do, but those concept feel like someone in a position of power said at the last minute that they wanted to see a full-body mockup and someone else threw those together really quick with the most basic details. I imagine the photoshopped photos included in their announcement more accurately depict what they'll wear.

Apparently people mainly on Facebook (and likely other social media outlets) are having a hard time grasping the whole “EST. 1932” and thinking this is an entirely new franchise and the previous one ceased operations.

Oh boy. We’re in for a long season.

All things considered, I’m fine with this and saw it coming, though I am a bit surprised that they were even able to implement this much change on short notice.

I like the font they’ve unveiled, though it reminds me quite a lot of the Rams’ new wordmark. I could see it transferring over seamlessly to either a Warriors or Redtails name.

As for the seeming striping inconsistencies: I really think they will end being the same as last year’s uniforms, the only difference being the wordmark on the front. Until proven otherwise, I chalk it up to Photoshop inattention to detail at this point.

Since it’s clearly a temporary identity, I’m fine with it looking jumbled and “out of place.” That way it’ll be a strange blip in history & I won’t miss it when it’s eventually replaced.

Your first mistake was assuming a majority of Facebook users were intelligent. 😛

People on Facebook have a hard time grasping a lot of things. I am not surprise by this at all.

JUST had a case study example of a team not taking their time with their branding package and it’s legitimately the BIGGEST disaster of a branding package in any pro sport.

The only complaint I have is that the W on their profile pic should be on the helmet. Not sure why they went the number route. Other than that I don’t mind them not having an identity for a year. I like to think of them being in timeout for bad behavior. When they get their ish together they can have a name and logo back.

Maybe so that people don't get too attached to the W? It's all meant to be temporary anyway, so this way they can make changes down the road without too much blowback.

I tried to change my name to "forum poster" to honor this stopgap switch and the board told me it wasn't allowed. Then I put in "iloveboobs69420" as a joke and that was allowed! Great, just great.

I think it looks decent for a logo. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s  actual genuine support for the team to keep the W (so long as the build an actual brand around it).

So "iloveboobs42069" is still available?

Now you have to lie in your bed and think about what you've done, Iloveboobs69420. 😛

EDIT: Aw, the name swapped back. Damnit. 😜

Changed it back for you.

No. The forum guidelines prohibit username changes that are "vulgar, overtly offensive, or be so close to another CCSLC member as to cause confusion."

Don't know what to make of this. Why not put the W on the helmet? Why get rid of the helmet stripes? Why change the jersey cuff and pant stripes at all?

Yeah, but it feels pretty awkward to have a placeholder name.

And nobody has the patience to wait years for a new name anymore.

I don’t see much of an issue with a placeholder name as long as it’s intent is to give the rebrand the care it deserves. I’d rather have my team play with a placeholder name for a year than accidentally put out some garbage ass logo that has subtle, unintentional nods to one of the most violent street gangs in the city and be stuck with it for ten more years.

Plus, there’s some inherent value to having a “one off” set of uniforms/gear/merchandise. It’s a nod to a very particular point in time, and down the road (assuming this only lasts a year) it’ll probably be somewhat rare. If anything, it can be a conversation piece.

Definitely predicting that the 2026 version of "players in the wrong uniform" thread will feature some Washington Football Team duds.

This was brought up on the latest episode of Basically a Sports Show.

Someone within the franchise quickly got the message. No more "Redskins" anywhere moving foward:

I just want to say, that I call shenanigans.  I've been calling my fantasy football team "Football Team" for literally years.  I'm not mad for some sort of stupid psudo-copyright thing, but simply because I've just lost the novelty of naming my team that, and people will now think I'm riffing off this.

Thanks for ruining my Thursday, Washington.

This news is actually a month old, but it kinda got overshadowed: Washington is retiring Bobby Mitchell's #49.

It's only the second number they've ever officially retired after Sammy Baugh's #33. Rather interesting that they finally honor Mitchell, who was also their first black player, just before all of the name change stuff happened. Unfortunately, they only retired his number because he just died. But it wouldn't be Washington if they didn't do the right thing for the wrong reason after years of sitting with their thumbs up their butt.
