Artificial Turf Timeline

A rather simple timeline on when teams played on artificial turf and how long they played their home games on those surfaces. From the original green carpet-like Astroturf to the more modern grass-like surfaces, such as Fieldturf.  Most people already know the origins of the original AstroTurf and why it was created.  I was rather shocked to learn that Chase Field in Arizona had switched their playing surface from grass to turf in 2019, in addition to the Marlins Park in Miami and the new stadium in Texas where the Rangers play had also adopted synthetic turf.  I thought the Rays and the Blue Jays were left when it came to artificial turf in baseball.  I’m only doing MLB and NFL teams.  Way too many College football teams to count.  If anyone wants to add college teams, CFL, or soccer, that’s fine.  Correct me if there are errors.

== Overview ==

13 All-Star games between 1968 and 1996 (1968, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1994, & 1996) were played on Astroturf.  As of 2020, no ballpark with Fieldturf or any modern Artificial Turf has hosted an All-Star Game.

World Series with at least 1 team that played its home games on artificial turf

1960s - none

1970s - 6 (1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1979)

1980s - 5 (1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987)

1990s - 4 (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993)

2000s - 1 (2008)

2010s - none

All artificial turf World Series happened 4 times (1980, 1985, 1987, 1993)

From 1971 to 1992, half of the National League teams played their home games on Astroturf almost entirely in that time period.  In 1977 & 1978, however, there were more Astroturf teams (7) than grass teams (5).  From 1993-1995, it was 8 grass teams and 6 Astroturf teams. The decline of artificial turf began in the mid-to-late 1990s but didn’t pick up steam until the early 2000s with teams leaving behind the cookie cutters in favor of newer retro-theme ballparks with real grass.  By 2005, no NL team played their games on artificial turf.

In comparison, the AL was more resistant towards artificial turf.  The highest peak would occur between 1982 and 1994 with four artificial turf teams and again in 1998/early 1999 when the Rays joined the league.  Ironically, the AL would still have teams that played their games on artificial turf (mainly the Rays and the Blue Jays).

The following teams have never played their home games on any form of artificial turf:

Baltimore Orioles

LA Angels of Anaheim

Boston Red Sox

Cleveland Indians

Detroit Tigers

Oakland A’s

New York Yankees

New York Mets

Colorado Rockies

Los Angeles Dodgers

Atlanta Braves

San Diego Padres

Chicago Cubs

Milwaukee Brewers

Until the last two years, The Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Miami Marlins were in this list as well.

Seeing plastic grass creep back into the game after being damn near eliminated really annoys me. Really one of the worst things that ever happened to the game. It was even worse for football.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Raiders, too? Or are they rolling in a grass tray? I'm not sure.

IIRC UNLV will play on Fieldturf while the Raiders play on grass. They're rotating the grass field over the turf when the Raiders play.

Great post, thanks.  It's sacrilege, but I like the uniformity of recent turf.  Usually looks clean, doesn't die or get chewed up, etc.  What really trips me out is brown colored turf that colleges use for the infield.

I missed that Sofi Stadium would have turf.

This is really cool, thanks for putting together. As a Seahawks fan, I did notice one thing that could be added, in 1994 the Seattle Kingdome had ceiling tiles fall before a Mariners game. It caused the M's to play on the road for about a month until the 1994 MLB strike and the Seahawks played their two home preseason and first three games of the regular season at Husky Stadium which would have been AstroTurf at the time.

Since we're on the subject, the Seahawks (Paul Allen) paid for Husky Stadium to be upgraded to Field Turf in 2000 in time for the Seahawks to use it while Seahawks Stadium was being built at the former site of the Kingdome in 2000- 2001. Seahawks Stadium was supposed to feature real glass (in part to help get an MLS team) but the Seahawks liked the Field Turf so much they installed it instead.
