NHL’s New Seattle Kraken Announce Name & Logos

The name currently feels like it's a too-late attempt to be trendy, but I think it'll age well as it becomes further and further removed from the recent pop cultural context. Because Kraken is/are a cool monster to name a team after.

The logos look pretty good, but feel a bit off to me. The S looks like it should be a secondary logo, and the anchor feels like it's more fitting for the Mariners than the Kraken. I was hoping that if they went with Kraken, they would go with a House Greyjoy style crest (and maybe they could make the squid's head form the shape of the space needle?)

Overall though, this is a good looking identity. Navy uniforms often look so blah, but they've avoided that here by having such thick light aqua stripes and pops of red.

Not a fan of the name. I would have gone with Sockeyes. Kraken just seems like a name from a minor league baseball promotional night. The logo and the colors however are perfect. The jersey gives me an Islanders fisherman vibe.

I usually hate the representative talk about what all of it means, but this part:

"The fear lies within what you don't see" with the subtle negative space tentacle and the eye, that's brilliant.

The space needle in the anchor logo rocks.

I was in Seattle for a few days last year, and the logo fits what I feel the "vibe" is there. I'm a big fan of a rebrand for the first time in a while, wow.

I think the dislike of Kraken comes from the idea we knew it was coming, it wasn't a "shocking" reveal in that case. I'd much rather a team that looks good than one that has the "best name."

You keep calling the NHL a “joke” and a “clown show” because...you’re not a fan of two expansion teams’ names? What am I missing here?

You don’t seem to realize that the nicknames aren’t the true issue here. They’re simply a symptom of the greater disease.

EDIT: yeah the formatting was there for a reason, if I needed everything to be in 12-point font all the time, I'd post on Usenet

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I LOVE the colors they used, very happy it's not red and black. The logos are nice.

The name? It's fine. We've grandfathered in weirder names (in all sports) because they've been around for 50+ years. I can't really talk crap about the name since my two teams are called the Avalanche and the Blue Jackets.

Okay, I guess they both use a teal-ish shade of blue.  But in every other way, the Kraken have a fairly classic look while the Islanders were... a departure.

I guess for me the defining features of that Islanders jersey are the unbalanced wavy stripes, the seasick NOB and numbers, and the overly-complicated chest patch.  All mistakes that the Kraken managed to avoid with theirs.

However, I also think there’s some stepping on toes going on between the Jackets, Jets, and now the Kraken using similar colours and eventually someone will have to blink first to move away from that.

Oooh yea that's kinda close.  The Jets have more white, but the Jackets could be a problem.  Could Seattle have an ice blue jersey instead of white?

I agree completely.

I had been tending to like the royal/gold version of the Mariners and I decried the Seahawks neon green. Then I went to Seattle for a wedding in January. Suddenly everything made sense. On a cloudy day, the different, bright shades of teal and green really shine. More traditional blue and gold didn't really fit.

The Kraken's colors and scheme is going to look terrific on the Seattle streets.

Boring and generic aside, it drives me nuts how the T lines up with the crest on the left, but the R sticks out past it on the right.  Why would you not have it end on the same line?

I hate this logo, but the farthest left portion of the T lines up with the left side just like the farthest right portion of the R does on the right. It's just because of the diagonal distance that it looks off.

One other nice thing about the primary (and secondary logo, for that matter) is it fits something @Gothamite said once long ago that stuck with me: kids should be able to draw sports logos on their notebooks. This definitely passes that test.

What’s the disease then? All of your rants against this name keep referring to this vague demise of the NHL and I’m just finding it hard to even understand what you’re even talking about. Is it expansion to American cities over more traditional markets? That’s the only slight connection that I can speculate you’re making here.
