Apparently they already are placing PSG in the knockout rounds even though United has a superior goal difference. Why even play it? Had PSG lost they'd have a lower goal differential which is almost always the first decider. Was head to head a change this year? Even then United split with both sides.

Head to head has been the Champions League's first tiebreaker of choice for a while now, and (this bit may well be new) the current second tiebreaker is goal differential solely in head to head games, not more generally - so United are done regardless of the PSG outcome.

As to why they're restarting it, if PSG win then they overtake Leipzig and win the group, which then impacts knockout round seedings.

Derby lost 2-0 to Chortley, but the Rams were forced to use their U23 and U18 players. Liverpool were held 1-1 at the half to Aston Villa's U23's before winning 4-1.
