I'm definitely a fan of the lighter green, but I always thought that its pairing with silver made for a pretty drab uniform. The white ones especially. Well would it look better with dingy gray because we all know Nike wouldn't have silver available?

I initially thought matte/satin finishes were interesting because they were rare but since they have been around for a decade now there is not a single instance where I can think it's a better choice than a high gloss or metallic finish, especially black. Throwbacks worn for the sake of an anniversary of the franchise or a championship I feel like have more of a purpose then just going and picking a random one out at a random time just to have a throwback. I think the biggest issue with alternative uniforms is how they seem to inevitably blur the lines of what is the "real" uniform and what is the alternative. This is pretty clear in baseball, where their are a number of teams who wear their dark jerseys so much you seldom see them in standard road gray. And in the NBA, I've given up trying to figure out the system for deciding what to wear and when. When the NFL first instituted alts there was a real sense that they had it buttoned down and had a plan in place... Only one alt, only twice a year. Now with multiple alts, multiple pants, plus throwbacks, it's just so much. Teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville seem to wear a completely different uniform every week. Even the Chargers and Browns who overall have awesome sets join in with the rotating looks. I'm extremely leary of adding multiple helmets to the mix. I know lots of people love the weekly uniform combo reveals. I get why it's kinda fun, especially if you're into the visuals of sports. It's just not for me, I guess. http://dstewartpaint.blogspot.com/
The_Admiral
This year, the Bears have worn orange alternates twice and white throwbacks once at home. Even without fans in the stands, that's too many times not to wear your primary uniform as what's supposed to be one of the biggest brands in sports. There's just not enough time for alternates in the NFL. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

The Steelers were absolutely terrible during their yellow helmet era. Why commemorate that? Beyond that, the yellow helmet just doesn't look like the Steelers to me. Maybe Green Bay or early-1970s Football Team, but not Steelers. This might not answer your specific query, but I can provide some insight into this. 2007 was the Steelers' 75th anniversary; I actually got the chance to do a LOT of work for their promotional campaign...the centerpiece of which was the rollout of that yello--okay "gold" helmet, which meant I got to do a lot of research on all this. I'm sure by now most know the Steelers' logo is adapted from the Steelmarl emblem created for the American Iron and Steel Institute back in 1958; the Steelers were coerced into using as their helmet logo on 1962. (The great irony in this is that it was Republic Steel of Cleveland that suggested the Steelers use it.) Up until that point, the Steelers had simply just used the players' numbers on the sides of their helmets (again, ironically enough, like their Cleveland counterparts). If you look closely enough at Ben's helmet logo above, you'll spot two key differences: one, its just the word "Steel" (they petitioned AISI to adapt the logo to spell out the word "Steelers" IIRC sometime in the early '70s), and the orange hylocycloid in place of the more common red used today (and I'm not sure when it changed to red, but it was definitely originally orange). Anyway, the team adopted the Steelmark emblem on a trial basis, since they weren't sure they'd like it on their helmets; this is the reason it was only on one side, the right side. 1962 ended up being a special year for the Steelers, as they went 9-5, their best record to date, and made the postseason for the first time in like 30 years or something like that. (Up to that point, and in the years that followed, the Steelers were one of the more futile teams in the league...imagine THAT today.) Interestingly enough, that wasn't the only helmet change that year... they wanted to mark the special occasion of their first playoff game that year so they changed up their helmet shells from yellow to black--also to help the Steelmark emblem stand out more. The buzz they generated from doing that was so positive they chose to leave them that way...and save for the spelling out of "Steelers", the helmets have been that way ever since. (Now their uniforms of course were all over the place up until 1969, when they finally settled into their "iconic" look.) Funny to think that if not for that fluke success of '62, the Steelers might still be rocking yellow helmets with the numbers on the side. Imagine them having won all those Super Bowls in THAT, and how differently those uniforms might be perceived today... (For the record, unpopular opinion alert: I've never really thought the Steelers' since-70s look is all that great--it's not bad, I've just never been all that high on it. I actually prefer the up-til-1962 look. Don't @ me...) *Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. || dribbble || Behance ||
The_Admiral
I don't think any team but the Packers should have a yellow helmet. Even when the R'dskins did, it was just because Lombardi was trying to port over the Packers. The Steelers looked great in the '70s with block numbers and condensed-block lettering, but Futura does not work for them at all, especially with the numbers in italic. They should look as strong and utilitarian, like steel. Even a font as fundamental as Futura is too fancy for them. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
