Houston Dynamo (MLS) exploring possible rebrand.

Nope.

I was referring to this quote from Joe Mansueto (this was from January this year):

I can see I probably made my comment sound like the change was happening for sure, that's my mistake for not re-reading before posting. I should have said there is a possibility of them changing again.

That's why I made sure to say (a couple times now) that I was talking in relation to how long MLS has been around when talking about my opinion that the Dynamo shouldn't do a full rebrand. Just a logo tweak if anything.

Anyway, sorry for the confusion there.

No worries. And that second point, about brands being deemed untouchable, wasn't really directed at you specifically. Speaking more generally. In the grand pantheon of pro sports, MLS is still very much a newcomer. I don't think there's enough established tradition to consider any brand untouchable. Certainly, it seems unfathomable that the Timbers, Sounders, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, etc., would ever change. But they're not the Yankees. Frankly, there is no equivalent in MLS.

And there never will be, since uniform changes are baked into the cake.  We'll never see that kind of uniform longevity again, not when more and more sports are announcing the expiration dates at the unveiling of their new uniforms.

I think there can and ought to be a middle ground, though, balancing the realities of this hyper-capitalist uniform changing era with the benefits of establishing an identity. DC United are a great example, actually, periodically updating their badge and putting out new shirts annually ... but, as much as anyone in MLS, you know them when you see them, and they're fairly well-established successfully in their market. (Of course maybe their shirt sales numbers are in the toilet, I don't know.)

Like yeah, MLS never has and never will have a brand like the Yankees -- on the other hand, the only way you establish a history is by being patient while building a good product and letting those associations take hold.

I think the cautionary tale of Chicago is -- does the existing state of things need changing for a lot of older MLS clubs? Yes. Does it help to tick off your existing fans and torch what history you do have? Probably not! (The other cautionary tale is don't rush through a massive rebrand in a matter of months, apparently catching everyone off guard including your kit supplier.)

I actually like the Dynamo name, as well as their colors. Their crest isn’t very exciting though, and I look forward to seeing what they come up with. I’ve done some concepts for them in the past, and each time I went with a space theme like the Astros and Rockets

I've seen a wonderful concept here many many years ago where the shape of the logo was that of a space capsule and I believe the colors were the same, including the light space blue or whatever it's called. Not sure it had the same team name. Unfortunately I can't find it with the search options :(

This is also pretty nice IMO

As an outsider, hopefully they the color orange involved and listen to their fans and communities what they'd like as name.

They should definitely look into tweaking the badge. Keep the colors but change what used to be pretty much "San Jose Quakes" badge--"restylized".  That logo still has MLS 1.0 smell of it. That whole name protruding from whatever shaped shield is straight up 1.0. I'm definitely down with a logo retouch for sure.  I would say to take cues from the "unrelated" Dynamo/Dinamo teams from Europe but with no connection, that would straight up be labeled "eurosnobbery" by some.

I believe this is it! thank you so much for sharing that again :)

IMO it's such a unique and "bespoke" logo shape, fits so well with Houston and it's history.

Also the Apollo name obviously too and as a plus would fit right in the space family of sports teams (Houston Astros and Houston Rockets).

Let me guess, the Dynamo will rebrand as something cliché such as Houston FC or Houston United. 🙄  I think the Dynamo have a name that is both well-established and unique and I hope that they will leave their name alone. If they want to redo their uniforms and logo/branding, I am fine with that but I think after all these years, they should stick with Dynamo. There are far too many MLS teams with similar names already. If they do decide to change their name, I think Apollos is a great choice myself.

nope.

no name change. no colour change. maybe a logo/crest alteration but that's it. their identity is perfectly fine.

This one's easy.

Reverse the nickname and the city. "Dinamo Houston." Adjust pronunciation, too. Keep the orange. But use Eastern European lettering and imagery.

(But no change from orange to red ...)

I'm all in on reversing the name.

I'm torn on the imagery.  It's very cool looking, but I'm not sure how much you would want to lean into that in Texas.

You can also go the route of Dynamo Dresden with the H inside a signet ring design.

No offense, but this approach to team branding would eclipse Real Salt Lake as Major League Soccer's most egregiously inept European pandering.

Dynamo - with the 'y' pronounced in the 'long i' manner - as a nod to Houston's energy-based economy and the old Houston Dynamos teams of the United Soccer League and Lone Star Soccer Alliance? Okay.

Dinamo - with the 'i' pronounced in the 'long e' manner - paired with "Eastern European lettering and imagery"? To what purpose? A salute to our nation's Soviet rivals in the 20th-century "Space Race"? It just doesn't hold up.

It's not awful, I don't like the text written out beneath it though. The crest on the ball itself should be the primary mark, not the one on Harden's jacket.

Also what's up with the lightning bolt?

I kinda like it. The most annoying thing about their old logo was that it was so busy. This is a nice simplification of the brand. Also, it’s pretty hard to beat a hexagon in terms of soccer specific branding, too.

I kinda like it.  The shape is great.

Not a huge fan of the HD monogram, but I presume they wanted something they could use on its own.

The only worrying part is the relative color balance.  If this is a signal that they’re going to be a black team with orange accents, that’s bad.   On the other hand, a black badge would look fantastic against an orange shirt.

More teams should consider a badge that’s not also their primary team color, so it stands out better.
