Revisiting the California Soccer League! (SERIES FINALE)

I'm back on the Concepts forum!

Five years ago, you may recall my old hand-drawn sports leagues, and I decided to spend my free time finally digitizing these old concepts using this ancient soccer template that I really like created by raysox five years ago!

Here's my introduction to the California Soccer League from five years ago:

Quote

The 49 teams in the CSL will be divided into 7 geographic divisions, each consisting of 7 teams. Why 49? 49 is a very significant number in California history, as the Gold Rush of 1849 brought many to the Golden State. And it just so happens that 49 is an easily divisible number.

This league was founded in 1970 with just 7 teams: the first of the two San Francisco teams, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Fresno, Pasadena, and the first of the two San Diego teams. After 1975, this league expanded to many more cities throughout California and even a few beyond its borders. (If Minor League Baseball's Double-A Springfield Cardinals in Missouri can play in the Texas League, then so can these seven teams!). Also, keep in mind that today's NASL and MLS teams don't exist, in an alternate American soccer scene dominated by state soccer leagues.

Here's the old map of the teams in 2015:

This is quite an interesting concept series, as I will be trying to make faithful recreations of most of my drawings, but there will be changes as well! Five seasons have elapsed since the first seasons, so there will be a few relocations (more backstory once I get to those concepts), maybe some logo redesigns, and maybe some new kits as well! With that said, here are the first three concepts!

The Inland Empire is the region that comprises the eastern parts of the sprawling LA metro area. Originally, the name of this team was "Inland Empire Kickers", but then I decided that it sounded best without "Kickers". I wanted another blue/orange team in this league, and so it went to here. (The orange has much significance as the citrus industry thrived here before the area's postwar suburbanization. The crest is a simple circle logo with an "IE" monogram.

The home kit uses horizontal, light blue hoops to represent the area's importance in the railroads (there are large railyards in San Bernardino). The orange clash kit incorporates a delicate arrowhead design, as arrowheads have an importance in the area's early history. The kits are supplied by Adidas, and the sponsor is the Arrowhead Credit Union.

In the span of five years, Inland Empire has moved to a snazzy new stadium in suburban Rancho Cucamonga, and the Pechanga Resort Casino has taken over sponsorship rights.

First off, shoutout to Lafarge for the name idea, as he has the Mount Diablo Phantoms as his league's Bay Area team; if I had not discovered that concept, I probably would have gone with something with the "Tri-Valley", or an inland subregion of the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. Now to some cooler parts. What makes Mt. Diablo unique is that they actually have two home stadiums throughout this part of the East Bay, with one home stadium in Walnut Creek and another in Livermore. The thing with that is that half of the Wanderers' home games are played in Walnut Creek and the other half in Livermore, so to enhance the feeling that this team represents the whole region rather than any single city. As for the crest, it takes the twin peaks of Mt. Diablo to form an "M" and "W", with the "D" wedged in between them. The colors are red and black because, since diablo is Spanish for "devil", those are colors commonly associated with the devil.

The home kit is a two-toned red kit with the Mt. Diablo abstraction across the top center. The clash kit is a white jersey with a red gradient at the bottom, with a silhouette of Mt. Diablo in there. The kits are supplied by Puma and the sponsor is Chevron, who's actually headquartered in San Ramon and not somewhere in Texas, as I had originally thought.

Sacramento was one of the founding teams of the California Soccer League when it began in 1970. The team went a decade with the "SC Sacramento" moniker until renaming in the 80s to a name that reflects the city's status as the capital of the Golden State. Originally, I had no clue how to tackle Capital City, until I remembered these wayfinding signs I saw throughout downtown Sacramento during the times I've visited there. The crest is pretty much that, with a stylized State Capitol building included. Blue (in this case navy blue) and yellow are colors commonly associated with the state of California.

The home kit consists of a simple yellow band going across a navy jersey; I moved the stripe to line up with the shoulders to avoid being a complete ripoff of the Boca Juniors home kit (I did put Nike as the sponsor for Capital City, just like Boca). The clash kit is a simple white-and-red kit based on the flag of California. The kits are supplied by Nike and the sponsor is Golden 1 Credit Union (who also has the naming rights to the new, under-construction Sacramento Kings arena).

Capital City revised its 2015 clash kit to include green shorts to represent that part of the California flag, and Golden One continues its stronghold over Sacramento sports.

These are the first three digitized concepts for the old California Soccer League, and if you'd like, you can totally read through my old thread and suggest changes for kits and stuff! :)

Hmm, you actually have a point! For the sake of simplicity, let's just say that this is a 2019 season of jerseys with play as normal 😂

Silicon Valley SC was founded in the 90s to cater to the growing tech industry in and around the South Bay region of the Bay Area. The colors are gray, black, and white, as the actual element of silicon is of a gray color. The monogram inside this relatively simple roundel crest actually has a lot of meaning, partly explained with this map:

Spoiler

bayarea_map.gif

The triangular angling of the monogram is based on the physical geography of the South Bay region, with the San Francisco Bay narrowing, with the Peninsula coming closer to the East Bay. The three horizontal parts of the "S" actually also represent three crossings between the Peninsula and the East Bay: the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge (CA-92), the Dumbarton Bridge (CA-84), and CA-237.

The home kit is a simple hooped kit using the colors on the crest. The clash kit is a more tech-inspired hexagonal design with colors commonly seen in computer microchips. The kits are supplied by New Balance and the sponsor is Google.

In the four years (changed this to the 2019 season in response to neo_prankster's comment about 2020 logistics) since the first series, Silicon Valley adapted its old roundel crest to fit a more app-based design similar to the 2019 NHL All-Star Game logo in San Jose, which I absolutely love. The tech-inspired hexagon pattern is more prevalent in the logo, and the home and clash kits have been switched to reflect the new color scheme of teal, white, and gold.

The name for the Pasadena soccer team, one of the original 7 CSL teams and one of the most successful, is credited to SSmith48, as Pasadena is known for the Rose Parade and the proceeding Rose Bowl. The crest is a simple roundel logo with a rose in the middle; I tried really hard to not rip off the logo of the NWSL's Portland Thorns FC, which has a very similar concept. There are rose thorns in the outer part of the roundel, and the colors are obviously inspired by roses.

The home kit takes the simple pinstripe pattern and incorporates rose thorns into the pinstripe design; my drawing of it here doesn't really do this design justice, as I ended up making them look too muddled up and close together. The clash kit was a kit I had a pretty hard time with because of the color scheme I would use. I wanted to do a kit inspired by the numerous arch bridges crossing the Arroyo Seco, the most famous being the Colorado Street Bridge; I ultimately settled on a jade green/two-tone red color scheme for this jersey. The kits are supplied by Nike, and the sponsor is the Chinese, Pasadena-based East West Bank.

Four years later, Roses has decided to play up its role as one of the more prestigious clubs in the league, keeping a rather classy and elegant look. The iconic rose thorn pinstripes remain, but the clash kit has changed to more luxurious and trendy rose gold look, complete with a gold gradient! Roses continues to represent the large Asian community in the San Gabriel Valley by having EastWest Bank as the sponsorship.

AC Monterey is the the closest team to my hometown besides Salinas' own team in this league. The crest for Monterey is inspired by the Monterey Canning Company building on Cannery Row, as well as the pretty cool-looking flag of Monterey. I was considering adding sea otters to this, but that ended up looking pretty awkward alongside the "flag".

The home kit is inspired by the wood panelings of the Monterey Canning Company building, whereas the clash kit is inspired by the city's flag. The kits are supplied by Adidas and the sponsor is the non-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium; the team has a unique deal with the Aquarium, with a portion of the team's profits going towards the funding of the Aquarium.

AC Monterey's look has stayed relatively the same since the 2015 season, except for a revamp of the clunky 2015 Monterey flag clash kit. Instead of a half white/green kit, the top is predominantly green and yellow with the shorts being black and white. The crest has also been slightly revamped to show more of the flag and to add a few more bevels to the crest.

I remember this thread from back in the day!  Nice to see everything get slowly digitized.  Everything so far has a solid, believable look, and I have very few quips/ideas (but still a couple!).

With Roses, I adore the thorn striping on the home and the use of rose gold on the clash, but I worry about differentiation of colors.  Pink vs white can work as a kit matchup, but it's a little bit of an edge case and you could argue for it either way.  I think that Pasadena would benefit the most from having a clash kit with more red - matches with the rose theme, and you could still use the rose gold in a tasteful way.  You could honestly flip the colors on the clash kit as they are right now and it could probably work out still!
Monterey is class too, the badge has the right amount of modernization, and the kits still pop.  Long term, I'm not sure about the flag-themed clash, and I don't envy you - it's a very difficult flag to put on a jersey.  My only idea at this point is to look at how other teams incorporate flags on kits and see if anything strikes you.  Barca usually finds interesting ways to incorporate the Senyera, and Athletic Bilbao is usually good for a kit based off of the Basque ikurrina.  As it stands, though, you could probably stick with this look and most people would be totally fine with it (including me, this is just nitpicking at this point).  If you kept the look, maybe a white/black version could work as a theoretical third kit?
Beyond those two minor quips, I've got nothing else to say - great job, all around!

There were two things I wanted in the Hollywood team: Art Deco, and flashiness in design. This identity certainly did the trick. :) It consists of an "H" over an Art Deco crest. The colors are black, pink, and gold. The black and pink represent the bright lights of Hollywood, and the gold represents the movie industry (think Oscar awards and stuff).

The home kit is a black-and-gray, vertically-hooped kit based on the striping seen on the crest. The clash kit is a highlighter pink (I literally colored it with a pink highlighter, but the scanner sadly could not achieve the same effect as the real thing) kit with black trim. The kits are supplied by Adidas and the sponsor is Paramount Studios, who still has their studios in the district of Hollywood (a part of the larger City of Los Angeles) itself.

In the four seasons since 2015, Hollywood has won another championship! Aside from the removal of pink on the home kit, the kits remain relatively the same, and the highlighter pink kits still survive! Netflix has since taken over sponsorship rights and a Hollywood office building that's hard to miss from Highway 101.

(On a sidenote, I feel like I predicted LAFC's colors and 2020 jerseys years before LAFC ever took the field!)

Great to see you back here, TheGiantsFan, and I especially enjoy seeing these designs digitized. I was a big fan of your hand drawn MLB-as-Soccer crossover back in the day, though I didn't have an account back then if I remember correctly. It's great to see the development of your original hand-drawn designs here in a new way!

My favorites are the Roses' home kit and crest, the Hollywood kits, and Silicon Valley's whole look. I'm not a huge fan of the color of the Roses' clash kit, while something about the pink in the Hollywood crest doesn't fit for me. Silicon Valley's crest is almost too minimalist to me, but seeing your explanation, I understand the reasoning and I do like the color scheme and clean-ness of the jerseys.

Great work all together though and I look forward to seeing more of it!

That Roses clash seems like a point of contention for quite a lot of people, so maybe I can revisit it again at a later time! 😂 I do notice that the shade of pink in the Hollywood crest doesn't match the hot pink of the clash kit, but I do think pink and gold makes for a rather tasteful color combo!

Although it is physically only about 20 miles away from San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles is separated by the divisional alignments of the league. Unlike their bitter rivals to the south, Paso Robles goes for a more complex identity, one based on the San Andreas Fault not too far east of the city (yes, many other cities in the league are close to the fault, but this region is a more seismically active area). Unlike the new San Jose Earthquakes crest that uses chevrons to show a fault line, Paso Robles uses a broken vertical hoop pattern (showing the actually movement of the San Andreas Fault: the "west" side of the fault moving northwest while the "east" side of the fault moving southeast). The "Temblors" part of the official team name is the Spanish word for "earthquake". The claret/blue color scheme (shared with the Premier League's Aston Villa and West Ham) is a nod to the region's growing wine industry, with the claret representing the wine and the blue because it just looks good.

The claret home kit contains a combination of the elaborate "fault line" pattern on the crest and a typical diagonal sash. The clash kit is an homage to the city's famous hot springs, with the two white lines representing smoke. The kits are supplied by Puma, and the sponsor is the 805 Beer, brewed in Paso Robles.

Paso Robles has stayed relatively unchanged since 2015, but they have since been relocated to the same division as their bitter rivals just to the south...

While "SLO" is probably not the best letters you'd want to see on a running soccer player, it's a common nickname for San Luis Obispo (often called "SLO Town" to differentiate from San Luis Obispo County), so it is used for their soccer team. Since Cal Poly is such a huge part of this relatively small city, I naturally had to use the university's green and gold color scheme for the team. The crest is a simple shield with a large "SLO" monogram in the middle.

Simplicity is a huge part of SLO's identity, with the home kit being a simple green jersey, while the clash is a white jersey with gold sleeves. The kits are supplied by Adidas, and the sponsor is Takken's Shoes.

SLO has also kept their very simple identity intact, with the biggest change being a new sponsorship in the form of the SLO Donut Company (I've tried their yummy donuts myself!).

I would like to thank you for considering and implementing my idea! Minor quip, though, Mammoth Mountain is a landform/ski resort, and not a town. The actual town where the team would likely play is nearby Mammoth Lakes.

With that out of the way, the wooly mammoth idea is amazing. I feel like either brown or gold with powder blue would work well as colors. Mining could work for a side-motif, as the Mountain and Town were not named for Wooly Mammoths, which have never been found there. Instead, they were likely named after the Mammoth Mining Co., which discovered gold there in 1878.

The sponsor would probably definitely be the ski resort, and you can make up lore saying that the team and resort are owned by the same people.

Hope this Helps!

Seconding this - I always thought that brown and powder blue with light brown accents would be a fantastic combo for a team, and Mammoth would be a shoo-in for this.  I'll also mention that the ski resort comes out with a unique beanie every year, so there is definite crossover potential there with the team.  It could make for a strikingly different clash kit, though if you go with brown as a main color, it would probably have to be relegated to either a third or goalie kit (most of their hats are dark colors that might be too close to brown).  Since you're working in the 2019 season, here are the hats for the 18/19 and 19/20 ski seasons.

This is great! And I just went back and reviewed your hand drawn series, which is also top notch. For Elk Grove, as a current resident I know that club soccer is a BIG deal here. You can check out their style here: https://elkgrovesoccer.com

They go with navy and orange, and basically at any large park on Saturdays you’ll see boys and girls of all ages wearing navy, orange, or white kits.

I think for your CSL a natural fit would be the senior to these juniors we see on Saturdays around here, like what is done with lots of pro teams internationally.

hope this helps inspire you further! Great work!

This is actually super cool, and I'll consider one of those designs for the clash kit!

I've never been to Mammoth, myself (it sounds like a cool place to go one day), so I appreciate these detailed suggestions! :)

Great work!

Ooh, I actually didn't know that!

I've only visited people in Elk Grove a few times so I never noticed the club soccer scene there. I'll redesign my Elk Grove team to reflect those junior teams! :)

Salinas (my hometown) has a majority Hispanic population, with a large portion of these people being of Mexican descent. To honor that, I gave Salinas the Spanish team name of the Salinas Club de Futbol. Furthermore, the red-green-white color scheme represent both Mexican colors and the strawberry fields that surround the city. The crest style is inspired this Spanish-style Denver Broncos crest by the folks from Football as Football.

The home kit incorporates the green hoops from the crest (which represent the rows of agricultural fields) with red trim. The clash kit uses three clusters of lines (8 lines on the left, 3 lines on the middle, and 1 on the right) to represent the 831 area code, which I notice people here take a lot of pride in. The kits are supplied by Adidas and the sponsor is the produce company Taylor Farms, based in Salinas.

Since the 2015 season, my hometown team has won another championship and also rebranded itself!

The new identity highlight's the city's Hispanic population (which makes up 75% of the population in a city of ~155,000) with a new crest inspired by festive papel picado designs seen at celebrations. The home kit remains the same, but now a sublimated "grid" pattern (taken from the crest) is seen in the green stripes. The clash kit has been redesigned to a red kit inspired by strawberries, as it's one of the main crops of the northern Salinas Valley.

The name represents both Del Norte County as well as the city of Crescent City, both located on the northernmost reaches of the California coast. The logo itself is a simple letter logo, which is actually stylized to be both a "D" and a lowercase "N" for the county; the city is represented in the crescent shape of the curved part of the letter. The colors are what you would see on a moonlit sky.

The home kit is a simple black/yellow/white kit, with the black that follows the piping stylized like a crescent. The clash kit incorporates on a gray jersey a Yurok blanket design I saw while surfing the Internet. The kits are supplied by Under Armour and the sponsor is the Yurok Native Americans, who live along this north coast of California.

Del Norte remains relatively unchanged, with only slight tweaks to the clash kit that has a traditional Yurok pattern. The Native American group continues with their unique partnership with this club.

I have also updated the OP of this thread to include an ongoing list of the team logos, which includes all the remaining teams in this series! I'll also post that graphic on the spoiler tag below, and I will be updating that graphic as I complete more teams

This is a fun league for a California native, and I appreciate the thought put towards the project. I didn't realize how many cities actually had a team until I saw Los Banos, a small pass through for my trip from AZ to the Bay while I was in college (Also, what a name for a city). I am actually surprised that bigger cities didn't truly get multiple teams like you'd see in England, but I do like the spread of clubs because it gives a diverse representation of the state.

While we haven't seen San Jose (where I am from), I do believe the treatment of the Bay Area teams has been excellent, from a native's perspective. Using Mt. Diablo as a name is great, and I love their crest/colors. Silicon Valley has appropriate colors and I really enjoy their kits. Maybe I missed it, but do they have a nickname? I would love to see what a soccer club would do for a nickname when it came to tech inspiration.

My favorite has to be Roses AFC. Their logo is gorgeous, and their twist on pinstripes is inspired. I would buy that kit if I could, and for full price. In second, I'd put that Salinas team for now. I really like the identity, and appreciate the kit sponsor inspiration for the clash. That would be another top I'd have in my collection from this league. You need to calm down with the all class kits. At this rate I would be broke fast, and we aren't even half way through! Keep up the spectacular work, and I'll keep a tally of fictional money spent on jerseys as this progresses.
