The Thousand Oaks crest is really clever... but it's not sitting right with me.  I don't really have a suggestion for how to fix it, but the balance is off  and it just looks like a weird set of glasses to me.

I feel like I should balance this with how much I'm loving the series as a whole.  Some great stuff here.

I really like the Thousand Oaks logo after reading the explanation. On first glance, I thought it read as a Quidditch logo or something. Then I saw the 1 hiding in the shield. Kits are class.

I'm glad you liked Thousand Oaks! :) I wanted to keep the "1000" subtle without distracting too much from the design, so I'm glad that it works!

Thanks for the feedback! I do admit it was a bit of a clunky design to pull off, but I tried to incorporate the "1000" in a way that doesn't detract too much from the design. I will look into redrawing the oak tree/glasses, though, as I'm not 100% on how I pulled it off, myself

I'm glad you're enjoying the series, though! :)

I LOVE this concept series, just saw it scrolling through and I love the idea behind it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! Keep Grinding...

Thank you very much! I only have five more teams left after this one, but stay tuned regardless! :)

Before I go on to the next team, here's a quick tweak to Rangers of Balboa Park based on feedback from @vtgco. The only change is the monogram, as the "P" has been modified a bit to fill in the shield a little more than before. I did try redoing the monogram altogether and switching it to a "Balboa Park Rangers" monogram but in the end, a small tweak ended up being the most effective to me

Finishing off the Western Division, here is the second-to-last Bay Area team in CSL2!

Western Division

East San José United

San José, California

Founded: 1998

Affiliated with: Atletico San José

51487266896_ab52d3b647_o.png

East San Jose United was created after a merger between three clubs from the east side of time: the San Jose Aguilas, Evergreen SC, and Coyote Creek SC. The crest combines the symbols of the three clubs into an England national team-style crest. At the top is a Mexican eagle to represent the large Chicano population of San Jose; the middle is the Evergreen glider, as John Montgomery conducted gliding experiments in San Jose in the 1910s; the coyote represents the namesake creek that goes down the Santa Clara Valley. The colors, font, and angle of the crest is taken directly from its parent club.

The home kit takes the diagonal from the ASJ home kit and turns it into a dynamic pattern that gets thicker as it goes "east". The clash kit is an alum-colored kit (which gives the neighborhood of Alum Rock its name) with a microchip map of San Jose taken directly from my San Jose Geofilter design. The kits are supplied by Umbro, and the sponsor is Phở Hòa (representing San Jose's large Vietnamese population).

Five more teams left!

I'm also glad that you really enjoy the concepts (IVXI in particular) there, @FlyingLamprey! I'm intrigued about your California county flag project, have you posted those anywhere yet even if it's incomplete? I would love to see those! :)

Looks great!  I think the mine shaft work better on the white, and the clash definitely has more of that autumn vibe.  Great work!  Big fan of Thousand Oaks and East San Jose, too - double green is an underrated color combination, and I love the fresh take on the "gradient line" pattern with ESJ's home kit!  My one quibble is with the grey clash - would it make more sense for the badge to be majority white like with the home kit?  Just swapping the white and light grey would fix that (though if the light grey disappears on the white then you could go for a monochrome white and dark grey instead).

For the flags, I'd have to do some digging and formatting because it's not exactly in a presentable format right now, but I could send that to you for sure!

To close out the Basin Division, here is the final team from the LA metro!

Basin Division

Berry Farm Athletic

Buena Park, California

Founded: 2001

51511508781_a458a8d424_o.png

The Knott's Berry Farm theme park guides this team's aesthetic, as it started out in the 1920s as an actual berry farm and later featured a replica ghost town. The Western, sheriff-style star (heavily inspired by this Northfield FC concept by @-kj) is flanked by the boysenberries that made Knott's Berry Farm famous. The Western-style font is inspired by my Buena Park Snapchat Geofilter, which itself is inspired by this vintage Knott's Berry Farm logo.

The purple/green home kit is inspired by the colors of the boysenberry, and the checkered pattern references the agricultural fields that once filled Orange County. The clash kit goes into the Old West style of Knott's ghost town, complete with faded wood panelings. The kits are supplied by Under Armour, and the sponsor is [obviously] Knott's Berry Farm.

As for a nickname:

Berries?

Beagles? (For Camp Snoopy)

Ghosts? (For the ghost town)

You know, I actually haven't thought up of any derbies yet! I think that's definitely something I will do once I finish this series, and there will definitely be a derby among the Orange County clubs!

As for a nickname for Berry Farm, I actually had "Phantoms" in my head the whole time. You're very close, though! :)

To close out the Valley Division, here's a team that would be really close to me in Stockton!

Valley Division

River Islands SC

Lathrop, California

Founded: 2017

Affiliated with: Modesto Athletic

51523497702_75f476e122_o.png

I thought I would cap my inclusion of real-life teams to just two (Benicia and Temecula), but during my team research I found that there was already an existing team at River Islands. In this case, I decided to give the existing team a refresh as it entered CSL2.

River Islands (playing in this massive new exurb of the Bay Area) comes in with a relatively conservative red/white/blue look (which surprisingly is quite lacking in both the CSL and CSL2). I thought that "R" and "I" would look good as an interlocking logo, but I wanted something that looked different from this Racing Indy crest by @pcgd.  I decided to put the monogram into a triangle to tie into the local freeway network (which my Snapchat Geofilter for nearby Tracy also references).

The home kit is a simple pinstriped kit with wavy stripes to represent River Islands' location on the San Joaquin River delta. The red clash kit is an abstract interpretation of the freeway network (with an "RI" monogram representing River Islands' relation to the freeways) with a hash/gradient pattern. The kits are supplied by Adidas, and the sponsor is Stockton-based Diamond Nuts.

Three more teams remain!

River Islands' logo looks good, but I think it's a bit simple for my taste. Despite having a slight baseball vibe, I have to say the IRL one is pretty nice with the incorporation of the waves and the I interlocking atop the top bar of the R, so maybe a small reintroduction of the wave element would help while still keeping it different. Jerseys are quite solid; I especially like the execution of the gradients on the away with the triangle-less crest.

Purple and green is possibly my least favorite color combo, but you make it look good with Berry Farm! (though I wouldn't be opposed to a burgundier shade of purple :P ...) The jerseys have some pretty design motifs with fun inspirations, the sleeves are a nice calling card, and I like that the logo makes a little pocket :)

East San Jose's crest is understated but pretty impressive; those three elements seem pretty hard to bring together, but you've done it! My only idea there would be to maybe add wheels to the glider, since that element's slightly harder to read for me.  Jerseys are great; especially that away... Though I guess if I had too much time on my hands, I'd probably try to have each line of the circuits gradiented separately.

Honestly, I'm with @-kj on the 1000 Oaks logo; I like the concept behind it, but it feels unbalanced and the trees don't read properly (I see golf balls on tees!) That said, if you're still looking for a way to fix it, I think I have an idea... Basically arranging the 0s the other way to make a single, stylized tree, and balancing the 1 with the SC on the right side.

Anyways, the jerseys are really pretty. That green mamba-skin one is really well done. My only suggestion would be to add a light-green number box that interrupts some of the pinstripes on the home jersey.

Hmm well IMO, my Sounders don't have a crest worth emulating *too* much... But your Inglewood logo is certainly a cleaner design that mitigates some of those problems :P

That said, I'd be down to see something a bit less generic... Just based on your links, maybe a more true-to-life SoFi Stadium/right triangle-shaped crest, counterbalanced with a Hollywood Park Casino-style script? Or jerseys with designs based on the lights of the casino, or a Forum-themed design? Idk...

I'm excited to see the final few teams! You've got this; pulling into the homestretch!

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback as always, and it's good to have you back after a while!

  • River Islands: Frankly, River Islands itself doesn't have a lot going on (even after driving around it once out of curiosity) as it's still a massive construction site. I guess we could say that the team wanted to cement itself as a "classier" team right out of the gates. I did consider adding a wave pattern to the inside of the triangle and even making an anchor out of the "I", but that would end up making the crest look more crowded than it needed to be. I'm glad you liked the clash kit especially, though!
  • Berry Farm: I'm happy that these kits exceeded your expectations for a purple/green team, and that you thought they were some fun kits! 😂 The shade of purple was taken specifically from the Knott's Berry Farm logo, and I wanted to make sure that Berry Farm's shade of purple was different enough from the division's two other purple teams (the very dark violet of Arrowhead and the pale purple of Hub City)
  • East San Jose: This crest was definitely a clunker to make, and even arranging the elements in the sketches was quite tough. I can definitely add wheels to the glider, though!
  • Thousand Oaks: Thanks for the crest suggestions, and that's a very well-done sketch! Your suggestions (especially the "SC" on the other side of the "1") are actually things that I had come up with when I was trying to redesign my "1000 Oaks" design, and I'm still trying to come up with a way to elegantly interlock the three trees. I can add a number box as well!
  • Inglewood: Your suggestions are also things I thought about when drafting Inglewood's team! I'm personally a huge sucker for symmetry, so I was slightly disappointed to find out that the roofline of SoFi Stadium wasn't as symmetric as I thought. I also thought about making a Forum-inspired design, but the Forum's columns look very similar the columns that I referenced for my Catalina Wanderers home kit in the same division :/

Glad to know we're thinking similarly for these teams, and I'll be sure to incorporate many of your suggestions in the next post! :)

To close out the southern California CSL2 teams, here's the last one from the Souther Division!

Southern Division

Kumeyaay Rovers

El Cajon, California

Founded: 1999

Affiliated with: Deportivo El Centro

51533049110_d640ee2b8e_o.png

This team for San Diego's eastern suburbs is heavily influenced (and majority-owned) by the indigenous Kumeyaay people. The crest takes different Kumeyaay symbols and combines them into a single design that's designed with respect to their heritage. The acorn shape represents the acorn mush found in the Kumeyaay diet. The desert blossom from the seal of the Sycuan Band and the four colors from the seal of the Viejas Band make an appearance inside the acorn. The feathers from the Kumeyaay Community College logo flank either side of the acorn.

The kits showcase two different aspects of Kumeyaay art: the home kit pays homage to Kumeyaay basketweaving with a woven snake pattern around the neckline, and the pink clash kit takes reference from this particular rock-carved pictograph. The kits are supplied by New Balance, and the sponsor is the Sycuan Casino Resort.

Before the final two teams, I'll bring out some revisions to the most recent teams. Thousand Oaks will definitely be overhauled!

To start off,  here are a few team edits as suggested by the readers!

  • Thousand Oaks: Following comments by @vtgco and @-kj, I decided to address the awkwardness of the original Thousand Oaks crest by digitizing this sketch provided to me by @vtgco.  Aside from the redesigned, more elegant crest, the only other change is the addition of a solid mint background for the NOB on the home kit

To finish off the Capital Division, here is Drake's favorite soccer team the final team from the Central Valley!

Capital Division

Yolo County SC

Davis/Woodland, CA

Founded: 1999

51552175484_42f0b4e366_o.png

Yolo County is located just west of Sacramento and is a large tomato-growing county (thanks to @woody86 for the snippet about the tomatoes). It is also home to UC Davis and a large bicycle-riding community in that college town. To represent the county as a whole, this team identity combines those two aspects into a "Tomato Red" and a "Bike Lane Green" color scheme. The crest features a "YOLO" wordmark intertwined with a stylized map of Yolo County

The home kit is a very simple white-based kit with Tomato Red sleeves and a diagonal gray pattern. The clash kit references Davis' biking culture (home to America's first marked bike lanes!) with a design inspired by bicycle pavement markings. The kits are supplied by Under Armour, and the sponsor is Nugget Markets.

*I promise I wasn't saving Yolo for the 69th team, and any relation between the two is purely coincidental 😂

At long last, we have reached the final team in the CSL ecosystem!

Northwest Division

510 SC

Hayward, CA

Founded: 2011

Affiliated with: Oaktown SC

51560932087_5e0156cd07_o.png

I was honestly quite stumped with how I was going to pull this team off, but then I found inspiration while I was riding the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from the Giants game this past weekend. The very simple crest takes inspiration from the futuristic, off-center front design of BART's original trains as well as the blue colors from the BART logo. I also took some inspiration from the off-center crest that @raysox had designed for King County SC back in 2015. The name is taken from the East Bay's 510 area code.

The blue home kit is a pinstriped pattern with three light blue stripes that denote the three BART lines that go through the Hayward/San Leandro area; the 5 breaks in the light blue lines denote the stations between San Leandro and Union City. The clash kit takes inspiration from the Hayward city seal, and it turns this square pattern into a diamond design. The kits are supplied by Adidas, and the sponsor is Shasta Beverages.

---

I still have to make kit compilations for the 70 CSL2 teams, and that will be posted next week. By popular demand, I will also be creating derbies and derby logos for the teams in CSL and CSL2.

For now, here is a graphic with all 70 CSL2 logos as well as a league map:

As for what's next, I'm honestly not sure yet what I'll be doing. Some of the things I've been considering is a soccer league for my Philippine homeland or digitizing my old hand-drawn baseball concepts. I'll figure out something, though!

Stay tuned for some final CSL2 stuff and in the meantime, please check out my CSL2 Behance post and leave an appreciation if you can! :)

Fair, the C O R P O R A T E   S Y N E R G Y  purple *would* win the day IRL 😝 Regardless, I think there's not much reason for concern with purple overlap.

I quite like the colors for Yolo, and the bike lane kit is really fun!

The 510 SC logo is a bit too simple and abstract to read as a BART train, but it's certainly not ugly... That said that home jersey definitely gives off train vibes in a really pleasant way. The away is an interesting idea; can't put my finger on what's bothering me about the execution, though... Maybe the Adidas logo & ad could be green with gold outlines?

Kumeyaay is up in the top tier of this series, IMO... Love the inspiration and the execution of the logo and the kit designs! That pink away is beautiful! Only ideas might be to go black for the numbers/NB/ad at home, and maybe center the spiral at the crest.

Anyways, the ambition of the series has totally paid off; you've got an a really consistently outstanding body of work here! I'm glad I could see it happen, and throw in a suggestion or two towards the end there. I look forward to seeing your next concepts, whatever and whenever they may be! Glad you suggestions improved the designs for those teams!

For Thousand Oaks, I wanted to make the widths of the "SC" text consistent with the widths of the double-outline, and the tree trunks somewhat consistent with the zeroes on the tree. But your revamp sketch really helped out, and I like it a lot better now!

Regarding the 510 SC logo, the original BART train is pretty iconic in the Bay Area, so I feel like the locals in this universe would be able to easily get the reference. I did try different color combos for the Adidas logo and the sponsor, and I felt that the white with green outlines was the best way to make them stand out against the busy pattern.

Kumeyaay was definitely a fun one to make, and I wanted to research it carefully to stay true to Kumeyaay culture. I've done a few designs that originate at the crest, and for this one I decided to "spiral" the design at the neckline for a change; it would also look a little odd for the entire "basket" to be off-center, too :/. I also tried black NOB/sponsors on the home kit and I felt that it "muddied" up the design a little bit. I'm glad you really enjoyed that one, though! :)

Thanks for following along the series, and I really appreciated your detailed feedback to help improve my concepts! :)

Maybe you should design kits from the past when each team was first created.

That would be cool to do, but that doesn't seem to be in my radar unfortunately :/

I sat on the idea of creating individual logos for derbies for a few weeks (similar to how @raysox created some for his old US Soccer 2030 concept series), but I ended up not really feeling it due to my current workload and excitement for my next project (more on that later!)

With that, I formally conclude the California Soccer League and California Soccer League Two series!

Thank you to everyone that has followed along on this visual ride through California over these last 11 months! I really did enjoy creating researching all these different places across my home state, and I really enjoyed bringing them together in each of the 119 teams :)

A special shoutout to @CaliforniaGlowin@woody86, and @ItsSlothy for detailed suggestions for CSL2 cities; and to @vtgco, @MDTrey4, @TheHealthiestScratch, @LastSonOfSD, and @FlyingLamprey for all the insightful feedback to help these teams look as best as they can be! I couldn't have done it without all of you, and you're greatly appreciated!

Before I end this post, here are a few more CSL/CSL2 goodies!

I also thought about potentially selling CSL/CSL2 merch on my Redbubble page, but I'll do that whenever I have a ton more time

---

As for what's next, I'm excited to announce that I will be giving new, digital life to my hand-drawn Alton Baseball League concepts from eight years ago! Stay tuned for those in the coming weeks! :)
