The_Admiral
An old criticism of the Indians' 1994-present script (along with the Phillies' 1993-present script) On This Here Board, and it's an accurate one, is that there's an uncanny-valley effect to the cursive lettering in which it is rendered too perfectly to properly scan as cursive, which necessarily has certain hand-drawn imperfections. This Guardians script takes that same uncanny-valley principle and builds on it by making the letters look pointy and stone-hewn, by design, which totally clashes with the idea of cursive writing. You could chisel letters in cursive. Most people with chisels and alphabets wouldn't. That's why we can easily read Greek and Roman tablets but struggle with Middle English manuscripts. You can't have it both ways. I mean, they very literally are having it both ways inasmuch as the Cleveland road script is arched lettering, which makes more sense, but to do what we all recognize as The Cleveland Indians Script right down to ending in "-dians" and a tail but then make the letters oddly jagged is a terrible contrivance. If the idea of the rebrand was to maintain as much continuity as possible for a team that's about 120 years old, a completely defensible idea, then they may as well have just rendered "Guar-" the same way as "In-" and dispensed with all pretense. I actually think the winged G logo is pretty neat, but it feels like an old full-name NBA logo that will never end up getting much play. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

It's the official demonym. Indy last year announced they were studying a name change and did do some community and tribal engagement around it. I expect that they will follow suit in the offseason this year or next. I have to imagine not having competed last year and being a minor league club, rebranding is more costly as a fraction of their annual net profit. I guess in that sense, it’s really fitting! It does fit. It has a pleasing mid-century Rust Belt feel about it. I’m still going to judge people for defending Roman Polanski or trying to make blackface jokes after the ‘70s. 25 minutes ago, mcj882000 said: Sure I would have preferred Spiders, and sure the winged-G logo is a little bit goofy, but I really like the pinched-in block C cap logo, and I have a friend of mine who pitched me this name for a video game hockey team years ago, so I already know about its pretty-cool backstory. Besides, pro sports could use a little bit of goofiness, in my humble opinion. As one buddy of mine on Discord put it: out with the "IN", in with the "GUAR". 8/10 Agreed! I find myself liking it even more. I do agree a bit with @the admiral about the script’s flaws, but I think it works to an extent here. One in a more ‘40s-looking style would be better, but I still like what we got. It’s got a good base to work with for designs. Francis10
Arrows is 100% the way to go for Indianapolis, yes. And it keeps a bit of a link to the original name without mascotizing a race. I mean, every team does something *throws sheet over the Cubs cap* Look, I don't even love the Block C. I've wanted a white stroke or some variation on it to be more distinct from the start. I just think they swung and missed on the "something" they did. Probably won't last anyway, but it's easily the weakest part of the rebrand IMO. The Cubs logo is a perfect circle. If you want to discuss the ones on the edge of what I said, the Dodgers have incredibly wide serifs, the Astros have a star, and the Rockies have a seperate inner color that varies in thickness through the letters. The Block C from 1915 actually would have been better given its square proportions. That would have made it stand out more than But the 1919-1920 World Series block C they went with looks like if you went to the place that prints jerseys for the local softball team and ask for your number to be C4. Or if someone needed one and only had numbers so they cut a chunk out and put it at the top. It's not even a non-standard ratio. It blended in as much as the non-contrasting colors without an outline blended. But it's over. It's done. We both agree an outline was needed. At least it's unique now. Just now, Francis10 said: No... they appear to be trying to navigate the "it's honoring local tribes" pathway to keeping the name. Yeah. Don't the two remaining teams have agreements and respectful friendly relationships with Native tribes?

SFGiants58
Maybe we should’ve let Dan Ackroyd do the branding for Cleveland. He’d come up with a crazy, likely paranormal idea. Very risky and probably terrible, but good with the right amount of editing. I’d love to see his original insane Ghostbusters script adapted into a comic. oldschoolvikings
While I would in no way try to claim that flying G logo is in anyway well designed, it's kind of endearing in a "hey, is that dolphin wearing a football helmet?" kind of way. http://dstewartpaint.blogspot.com/
