Cleveland Indians become the Cleveland Guardians

The name the Cleveland Spiders both excites and scares me.  I think Cleveland has a beautiful chance here to go Spiders, stick with a black and red scheme (and eliminate a navy/red team on top of it) and go with a nice, minimalistic logo and keep a traditional feel, to a team who's been around for a very long time.  They also have a chance to go big, and bold, with a spider holding like, eight bats and feel like a AAA team if they wanted to with that name, too.  Thankfully, I'm not super worried about that, I just know it's possible.  So it still remains a small fear.

Just do the low hanging fruit here.  One color, block spider.  Black and red.  Traditional look, make the red pop on the black.  It's easy, people will love it for the color scheme and the name alone.  It will sell.

I like this except that's the same color scheme as the Cincinnati Reds in the same state and I'd assume they want to separate themselves from them.

Yeah, it's a little close to home.  Honestly, this could all be solved if the Reds just dropped the black and went to a red and white team, but now we're traveling down a hole that won't happen into "Things 1908 would do to fix the world".

Keep the navy and red if you really want to keep the separation.  Or make them a black heavy team with red accents.  I think you'll keep the differences enough between the two franchises where it won't really be that hard to distinguish them.

And people are already sitting on the Spiders and Baseball Team trademarks. As cheap as Dolan's being this year, he's probably going to find something else. The people filing don't have full control yet so who knows?

Has Cleveland Redwolves already been trademarked?

Yeah it could definitely work and maybe it would nudge the Reds into realizing that they should drop the black anyways. But I think my preference for colors would actually be to keep the same navy and red scheme. I think I want them to rename but still look like the Indians or at least resemble them as opposed to looking like a completely brand new team. I love how this still reminds me of the Indians, honoring their past while dumping the controversy and still moving forward yet with a classic name. I'm no Indians fan but I feel like this is the happy medium we need...

That cap logo has been getting a lot of attention in this thread, but I'm really not a fan of it at all. The lack of symmetry is jarring to my eyes. For that reason, the integration of the C into the spider silhouette strikes me as a bit slapdash and inelegant. I mean no offense to the designer, but I just don't see it working.

That's the biggest problem I see. The logo options for other names should b better. With spiders you have two, maybe three logo options.

San Francisco Spiders - Wikipedia

Spider facing up or down with the C on his back because they need to have some type marking on it's back and a C with a spider web inside it. I think the other names work better in the case of logos is because you aren't stuck using an animal that has so many appendages that have to be accounted for, whether it's sitting still or moving.

I don't see this as an issue, as the latter example is pretty dang cool (logo specifically). Also, this same issues exists with most animals. Bird logos are usually either in flight or just the head, same with tigers and stuff.

I wouldn't choose a black and red color scheme, nor stick with the current colors, but there are some Spider options to find inspiration beyond Black Widows.

"The name is not acceptable"

"We're going to use the name for at least another year"

The hell?  I get keeping it rather than going with an interim since to my knowledge it isn't thought of in the same context as the WFT's former name, but you can't have it both ways.  Just say "we feel that it's better for us to move in a different direction with the name".  The way it stands, he's openly using a word that he admits is unacceptable.  Call it unacceptable once you actually drop it.

The worst public relations franchise in baseball is back at it!

I guess I'm glad there won't be one year of Cleveland Baseball Team or Cleveland Baseball Club, but how do you say something is unacceptable, but that you're still going to do it for another year in the same interview.

but I hope this doesn't give them an excuse to run with the name for a few more years and hope people just kinda forget.

That would be the funniest thing they could do, just wait everyone out, but I don't the warring hordes can be waited out. They get stronger every day. They get everything they want. Actual indigenous people don't, though; they'll continue to live in what amount to third-world countries.

Seeing how many people have treated the interim Washington name, he probably wants to avoid the treatment WFT got for not going directly into a new identity. He's probably signalling the fans that still embrace Cleveland's current name that if they feel that kind of way about it they need to stock up now.

Exactly. The polls that ask Indigenous People if they are offended by team names never bother to ask the second question - how important is it to you? My guess is that the name of the Cleveland baseball team isn't topping anyone's list of concerns on the rez. But hey, take the wins you can get, right?
